Favourite background character? A simple decision. Only one has emerged from the countless sea of nameless hordes, and established themselves as an important and interesting gear of the show. Only one has battled the adversity of discrimination, losing family, and the intricate troubles of starting a new life. Only one has truly captured my heart, even more so than the main characters. An unsung hero in my eyes, the bird that never sings, the light that never shines, yet is always there. The others may shun or ignore them, but they battle on, living their life how they want. It is that defiant courage and steel determination to overcome life's problems with the minimum of fuss is why they will always be, my favourite background character. Bloomberg. Bloomberg is best pony. Seriously though, I've never really been too interested in the background characters, mainly because the majority of the reasons for liking them come from fanon, which doesn't appeal to me too much. I form opinions based on what I see during the show. Otherwise, Pinkie Pie would be a murderer, Rainbow Dash would have an arguable sexual orientation, Celestia would be like Kim Jong Il crossed with Dennis the Menace and according to my art, Twilight Sparkle would be a heavy narcotic abuser. So I tend to value canon over fanon. However, some do have interesting personalities, for what little we see of them. Octavia caught my eye as soon as I saw her. She was just an interestingly designed pony, and stood out for me. Another one is Colgate, no idea why. Her colour scheme is pretty nifty, and she really does remind me of toothpaste. Derpy Hooves, for me, sums up fanon. She is the flagpony of the power that fans have. I mean, they have completely fabricated this entire persona based off of one word and an animation error. I'll be honest, I do get taken aback by that, but it's not necessarily bad. I just think that sometimes it may be worth remembering that Derpy is essentially a fan made character, as officially she remains an unfilled out character. That said, I do like Derpy Hooves. I never used to, but I saw a picture of her sitting down, and it was just really cute. Changed everything. But hey, Bloomberg yo. I can't blame Fluttershy for wanting to be a tree, ol' BB knows how things go down. Word.
Oh, I forgot about DJ PON-3. I did not think about him/her as a background pony (I guess that this sentence is not grammatically correct; but i don't know...). I don't know why... Maybe because he/she isn't a member of this traditional crowd... But DJ PON-3 (I prefer this name, but Vinyl Scratch is OK too (in my opinion) ) is also one of my favourite background ponies (if is a background pony).

Cloud Kicker and Lemon Hearts? Two non-fan-favourite background ponies? I'm intrigued. It doesn't happen quite often that someone admits to like one or a few of these. Also, Cloud Kicker is, while not on top of my list, one of the ponies I like a lot, too, and I'm somewhat like Lemon Hearts.
You guys. Those aren't BACKGROUND characters. Those characters have episodes about them. Background characters are characters that are only seen in the background, and they don't really talk much if at all.
I quite agree. I love all the ponies you mentioned! And most of my favourites don't get enough appreciation. Of course, i DO love Derpy Hooves and Doctor Whooves, but i would like to show my underappreciated favourites. Here are all mine! - Lemon Hearts - Lemon Tart - Seafoam - Violet - Red Velvet - Rose Rose, Violet, Lemon Tart, and Red Velvet are my favourites, though. ^^
