I have thought of something last night, a pet theory but a theory none the less and I dont expect it to come true however there has been something that has been bothering me. Both Nightmare Moon and Discord were both sealed away by Celestia and/ or the elements of Harmony (and in Discords case he was sealed with Luna's help). However both were liberated at the beginnings of each of the two season premieres so far and both by uncertain forces. In season 1 it was "the stars" who set Luna free And it season 2 it seems that it was the CMC who freed Discord by those who hate them and the fact they were so close to his statue... But what if there are more sinister things at work for Discord, such as what if the the thing that freed Luna also freed Discord, another force of evil we may face in season 3? This is just speculation of course, its too early to say too but its a good pet theory. Lets hope it doesn't die of dehydration like my last pet theory. :ahh:
Sounds like a fairly reasonable assumption, considering that Season 3 is going to need a good kick off!
Well, to be honest, i never saw anything that would say that Discord would be the strongest evil thing in Equestria. I am sure there is something... above. Maybe... the devil in some fashion? Because, you see, Discord does behave like a devil in some way. He manipulates people's minds.
I think that Discord is pretty much the closest thing to the Devil Equestria is ever going to get. And well, does it really need to get even more powerful and evil than that? Season 3 might as well just make Cupcakes canon and leave it at that. Not a pretty thought...
Consider the following: What if Nightmare Moon and Discord were the embodiments of two of the seven deadly sins? That would mean we might see five more major villains in any subsequent season openers. Nightmare Moon would be Envy, obviously, and Discord would probably (I think) be Greed. This is all assumption based, but hey, WHAT IF?
I would actually peg Discord as Sloth or Pride faster than I would peg him as Greed. Sloth because, in the Sin meaning of the word, Sloth is essentially the sin of not emotionally or spiritually putting forth the effort to care about anything. It's really closer to being detached or sociopathic than it is about being just out-and-out lazy, though laziness is one way that such Sloth can manifest. As for Pride... Well, he put his Chaos and his fun above EVERYTHING. Nopony's happiness or suffering mattered to him beyond brief entertainment, and it was his security in having won (which he hadn't) that ultimately proved to be his downfall, since he refused to believe the Mane Six had overcome his machinations until it was too late for him to stop them. That said, given the connection I see between Discord and Nightmare Moon, I wouldn't be surprised if any other villains were connected to Discord in a manner like the villains from Okami were connected to Yami.
Hmmm... I would agree that there may be more villains coming out... but as for my own view, maybe they shouldn't start of S3 with the same old plot. You know, it sometimes gets old. Maybe it's time to just give a good flowing story and then introduce the villain when they least expect it. Although that in itself is a typical plot for most shows, it would do the show good to have a change in flow for the next season. And yes, I find the theory on the villains embodying the 7 deadly sins quite intriguing. Luna was jealous of Celestia so she can firmly be given envy as said above. And Discord, well, I prefer to tag him with pride. Maybe the next one should be... I dunno, Wrath? It would seem nice for the Mane 6 to battle an opponent that would be able to actually do some harm. After all, the show seems to have evolved from just a normal little girls show to address some of the unexpected demographic: us bronies. It's getting a bit more, "less girly" and becoming much more thick with plot and a bit harder comedy.
I must admit that I followed a far different path with my thoughts but I do quite like the idea of the "bad guys" at the starts of the seasons having been representitive of the sins. My theory, at least for the next character to be introduced, though they wouldn't really classify as bad. Look at it like this, we've had Celestia, who represented the sun (her name kinda screws with my theory). Then there's Luna representing the moon, named after the moon. Two opposite sides of the coin. Now with season 2 we've got discord, or as I like to call him, DisQord (cause it seems like how he would write it) representing the spirit of chaos, not exactly something conducive to maintaining peace, but without a bit of randomness to the world there wouldn't be differences, life would be monotenous and boring without a bit of chaos in it. However, as we've seen with both Luna and DisQord, they have taken what they represent beyond the limits of what is required for a balance. But notice that we have Celestia to balance out Luna here, but nobody to balance out DisQord. Well the opposite of discord is order, or harmony, such as in the elements of harmony. The theory is that there is Harmony sealed away somewhere in Equestria, with fragments of her power, the elements of Harmony, seperated from her. As for how Harmony went bad, assume that their was someway that she reached a point where she began to attempt to operate every fuction in Equestria to make sure that order was maintained. Hence we have the ponies being able to control the weather (in the theory this being thanks to Harmony) and places that cannot be controlled such as the everfree forest (thanks to DisQord). As i said, it's a very long shot. But to me at it seems to make some kind of sense.
That's a really interesting theory. Makes sense, too. And, I like the topic starter's theory as well.
I would prefer that the the next villain (The Big Bad, hopefully) is immune to the elements, or at least Twilight being taken out of the picture. However, a shape-shifting villain would be nice. Yes, Discord and Nightmare Moon did shape-shift. But, I'm taking about one that takes the form of one of the main cast and uses that form to cause disunity between the friends. Discord caused disunity, but his method had to do more with magic than anything else. Now back to my first two points. 1. I would prefer the next villain to be immune to the elements because they seem to fix problems too easily. It's like having God on your side. Also, it would be nice just to see problems not fix by the same method all the time. 2. Taking Twilight out of the picture because she is really the one who beat both villains. She took action and her friends followed her. There is another reason I would like to see Twilight out of the picture. The reason is that it would be nice to see the characters pick up the slack when Twilight is gone. Let me explain. In other shows, removing a person from the group would cause the whole group to fall apart. The point I'm making is that I would like the friends to mostly complete a task without Twilight. Of course, they will still need her for the elements of harmony.
Agreed. I would like to see them use something other than the elements for once before they become a deus ex machina. But to be fair it is a kids show and it has to comply with the educational/informational standards.
I like to see the exact opposite of Nightmare Moon, in other words, Princess Celestia gone crazy. Something like um... Solar Blaze confusing the world with an endless and too hot day. I'm also thinking of a yellow Celestia with a white sun as Cutie Mark (just like Luna/Nightmare Moon). Perhaps if I wrote a fanfic about it first?
Well, yeah, the problem with their being a serious antagonist is the fact that it's a children's show about how friendship is magic and all. And know that I'm not trying to demean the show in any way whatsoever. Having a serious villain could just impede the creators of the show from getting across what messages they're trying to share. I think seeing one on the show would be great, but I don't expect to ever have one last longer than the usual two episodes. Sorry if I missed the point of this topic.
I couldn't help but to laugh at the subject line of this thread. Using the term "big bad" reminded me of Buffy the Vampire Slayer! Could you imagine if Joss Whedon were to write some episodes for MLP?! OMG OMG OMG, that would make the episodes about 20% cooler! (If that's even possible)
Not bad at all. But... Nah, joking. Aside from Harmony herself, yes, I like the theory that something aided both Luna and DisQord (Because it makes total sense calling him that way. Maybe though disQorD would be better.) (And if the theories in the "The stairs will aid in her escape" thread are not accounted for.) Something that corrupted Luna, created/maddened disQorD and created the monsters in Episode 11 (Hearth's Warm Eve, if I'm not mistaken), among other things. Something older than disQord and the two sisters...
