I am still relatively new to MLP, and I am only up to episode 4 in season 2. Anyway, I was wondering what is the relationship between Twilight Sparkle and Spike, only I am finding it slightly confusing, is it kind of mother-son relationship? Friends? Master-assistant?, mentor-student? Big sister-Little Brother? I am confused, because in some of the first season episodes (as I have only watched those so far, apart from some random episodes in later seasons, I’ve seen Dragon quest, for example) anyway, in the first season, I am a bit confused, sometimes it seems more like a employer-employee style relationship (in the way, for example, she sometimes orders him about), other times it seems like they are good friends, and sometimes a sister-brother relationship comes to the surface. Personally I think it is more big sister- little brother myself, from what I have seen, but maybe that is totally wrong. I think the best case I can make for thinking it is a brother-sister relationship is in Dragon Quest, and the way she is very protective of Spike in that episode. That said, Rainbow Dash and Rarity are also equally protective of him in that episode. So, I don't know. I am just slightly confused by the relationship between the two.
I can't for the life of me remember which episode it was, but how they came to know each other is explained in one which you probably haven't reached yet.
well, officially they have assistant - professor relationship, however, emotionally they have more of little brother - big sister relationship

Spoiler: May be a slight spoiler, if ya haven't seen that episode I always think of their relationship as being a mixture of Mother-and-Son (as Twilight hatched the egg during the magic audition) and Brother and Sister (They kinda grew up together. They were both very young when Twi hatched that egg o' his)
I see Spike as sort of an honorary member of the main six. He's like Tails from Sonic in that at face value he seems like the tag-along kid but is really a bit more
He is Sparky's assistant but in many ways, she is quite like a big sister in the way she deals with him. I see it as being somewhat similar to AJ and AB's relationship in that Sparky is more or less raising him but not necessarily in a 'parental' way.
I've seen the Cutie Mark Chronicles episode, but that just confused me even more, to be honest. And it does sound like there is not one anwser, so I am happy that it wasn't me being stupid or anything. That is a good way of looking at it Yeti, I hadn't thought of viewing it like that before I have not seen that yet, but I know that Spike becomes a dog in it, which does suggest a pet like relationship. Whcih, as a Spike fan, I dislike somewhat. I personally quiet like the idea of them being like big sister - little brother with each other, as well as having a professional relationship. Although, maybe Spike doesnt quiet view it like that, given his reaction to Owlicious in Owls well at ends well, although Owllowiscious (I hope I spelt that right) is definitly Twilight's pet, as seen in May The Best Pet Win. But, Spikes reaction to him definitly reveals his insecurities about his relationship with Twilight in anycase.
