First off, I mean nothing against the creators of the duplicate threads. This is simply a pet peeve

I've been noticing a trend lately where multiple threads are beginning to pop up dedicated to the same thing, but in different areas of the forum. It's kinda confusing when there are two or three threads dedicated to the same subject, splintering discussions throughout the board.

Overall it just kinda gives the forum a bit of an unorganized feel. :sigh:

Well that's the moderators job to merge or get rid of duplicate threads.

I'm not sure, but I think the moderators can merge threads together just like the other forum I go to.

Just like when Season 2 came, a whole bunch of threads have been created all about
    Season 2/Episode1/Discord/Etc...

So Grey/Derpy/Foxy/Flash/TWIF/Any other Moderator/Administrator can do something about those pesky duplicate threads?

They can. I've been a mod on several forums and even run my own now, and if the cheap old little host I'm using allows it, I know magnificent forum like this has it. ^^

I just thought I'd bring it to their attention is all.

Sounds like a plan to me. Maybe, just maybe, there'll be a thread clean up one day, where there'll be a merge, move and delete frenzy, just to spruce things up a bit. Seems fitting, considering the recent changes and refitting this place has had. It could be like Winter Wrap Up! Only with forums. Up to the admins though, this is their site.

On a somewhat related note, this reminds me of Bamboo (remember her?) talking about how all artwork should be kept in a single, continuous thread, rather than have a scatter of easily lost and forgotten threads started by individuals. This was actually how the Random Pony Related Art Thread came about. It would be nice if users could utilise this more often, as it only seems to be used by a few of us. I think it would be nice if all the artists on the site came together in one thread. After all, I've received more constructive criticism from that thread than I've ever had on deviantART.

Just raising that topic while I'm here.

Yeah I know, I'm a Global moderator for my gaming clan's forum and I see a button near the bottom that says certain things. Which I know what they all do. It's just I never have gotten a chance to even use those features with my moderation.

-Some of these threads should be Pinned/Sticked to the top of their subforum. (ex; General Chat Thread)
-Some of the old threads that are months old should be locked so they can't be necro'd.
-Some duplicate threads should be merged and/or removed and just leave the highest posting/activity thread out of those duplicates.
    -Etc...

Sorry for not paying more attention, I've just been pretty busy and it's hard to keep up with the very large inflow of new posts and threads on the site at times

Practical vid is practical. Why not assign more moderators?

Oh no, no. I don't mean anything by it, I just wanted to get the word out there that this was happening. A mod/admin can't be omnipresent after all, so need to apologize.

I know how hectic it can be modding/running a forum; I've been doing it for last seven years.

More mods probably would be a good idea, though. Season 2 is only going to bring in more and more members so situations like this are only going to become more common.

It's actually a surprisingly time consuming task to comb through and merge threads, it's doable but it's not something we want to be doing as a regular upkeep - the best thing to do is report a post/thread that crops up (if it's very similar to another) and put the "Reason" as 'Duplicate Thread' or 'Similar Thread' - We'll get an email and a link and be able to merge it there and then if we see fit, as opposed to spending hours and hours combing through some 1,300 threads..

Don't go back and look yourselves, just start doing it on any new ones. It's not worth the hassle. What's done is done ;)

Well, most forums i've been on, mods/admins never really cared for the report function. So obviously people will assume the same for this one. Maybe you should advertise it a bit more somehow

I have a feeling we will have a lot more multiple/duplicate discussions about... "Season 2/Upcoming Episode/Episode/Etc..."

So many more people might come into the forum and just post a thread that probably has been created.

    Will do.

Also Grey, can you add a new rule on the "Rules" link that says to make sure to check if there is a thread made for it before creating a new thread?

One more thing. Any possibility you will recruit new moderators sometime in the future?

Hmmm, I seem to be late, not that I'd have much on this matter... :derpe:
I'd just like to say,I'm not really fo locking up really old threads, sometimes they could get revived, and locking it up might cause somepony else to have to create an exact duplicate...
It's a touchy thing, it all really depends on the circumstances. But for RP threads, art threads, even video threads, and the sort... would be the one's I'm somewhat "lobbying for", as well as some general chat threads.
I do understand the need to make new threads, though... and having very old threads just sticking around, especially on certain general chat and forum games topics, could cause a decrease in new threads...
But I do agree with the original idea, from Blu-Cup... duplicate threads, particularily when being active at the same time, can lead to a fair amount of unneeded problems with organisation, and in particular in my opinion, people chatting on the duplicate threads would not be posting on the same thread, a social problem for a community forum like EPR... (I guess, a more detailed version of just saying organisation is what I said to an extent :p)
I would be happy to see some more... well, seperating of different topics in other parts of the forum though. General chat has a little too much on its thread diversity,
(as in, threads ranging from the "how was your day" threads to "what music are you listening to now?" to "My First Pony Shirt"...) ..I just feel there should be some more, "classification" of threads of the sort.
Similarly with the forum games and RP... the positioning of the RP with the forum games section kind of makes RP totally dominated over by forum games.
I think that the General Chat should have a fair amount of reorganising... and be seperated into two sections or more, one in particular for very general threads like "What music are you listening to now?" and the sort...
Also, same with RP/Forum games on the seperation part.
But I can see the other problem... most of anything that goes on in here tends to be on the General Chat and Forum Games sections. Anything elsewhere seems to have problems getting posts regularly...
Out of sight, out of mind to an extent. Also for that matter, the image threads on General Chat like the "D'awww thread" and "Funny Pony images" threads... they're there because Visual Art is mainly used for original drawings... there's no place for simply sharing images, yet. (yup, I know there's two Visual Art sections)
I really feel that categorizing the threads even more, and placing more sections on the front page of the forums would have more positive results, than negative ones.
    ...it seems I babbled. :derpe:

Sounds like a plan, will keep in mind in the future.

But what of the threads that are started outside of their designated forum like, say, Snowy Shuffle's 'What music are ya'll listening to?' that's in the General forum. Should future threads that belong elsewhere be reported the same way so that they can be moved to their proper location?

I'd think those image sharing threads, since they're for member-created stuff, are fine there. Some forums consider them forum games for some reason, but I never understood that thinking.

And I think the two creative forums for pony and non-pony related content seems to be a bit much. I'd go about that by doing something similar to the Media sub-forum where you have the "Visual Art" forum and on the root of that forum you have room for all the pony art, then a sub-forum at the top (like TV/Games/Music in Media) for non-pony related art. Just make Carousel Boutique dedicated to the forums for showing off created works is what I'm saying, basically.

(This is just my organized side that's blabbing, please ignore. :DFH:)
