As is probably obvious from what I sometimes cause, I love debating. However, I love lulz more. So, I had to forgo joining the debate team, due to problems with my schedule in regards to said activity. As such, I was heavily dissapoint in the timing. However, this also got me thinking. I have no idea how many bronies here have an interest in debating, so, like most of my half-flanked ideas regarding the site, I put them here first. So, Everypony's Debates?
I can be extremely stubborn and argumentative, and try to use carefully reasoned logic to present my side of the issue in order to crush my opponent, which is usually my best friend. :derpe: But a debator...I dunno.
Debators : Use logic and wordcraft to prove a point that the opposition is opposing. What you described : Same as above, with different wording. Only difference is that debates have some sort of judging system.
i once got on a debate team but i didnt fit it, all of the ideas sounded fine and i couldnt expose my way of thinking, so i always ended up like "okay, you are right" XD, and then i left...
Half of the debates, are politics, true, but the really tasty ones are the moral ones. Example : "If a study conclusively proved the superiority of one race, should that study be published?" Epic debate was epic. As for not letting your way out thinking out, that's more practice and getting past stage fright than anything. And there is no stage fright over the internet. Probably.
....thick-headed, debator to an extent maybe... Actually, I might just be someone who argues a fair amount. :derpe: <stage fright IRL. None online, somewhat? Anyways, haven't ever joined a debate group. But being in a small *cough*hick*cough* country school, you know how it can be.... :Trollestia:
I used to be an activist and great at debating, now I have long been out of practice. I used to care a lot about the state of the world and would fight to improve it. But being so aware of what was going on became too depressing and made me realise it was more and more hopeless. So I decided to just stop arguing and enjoy my life rather then lose any more faith in humanity. Besides I don't have enough of a presence IRL or online to make any difference.
What is an argument but an informal debate? As for giving up on improving humanity, as I sad, you can have a debate on nearly any topic, as long as the asker has the imagination to make a debatable question for the topic. So, the question still stands, how many here would participate if there was a debate thread somewhere on Everypony?
The problem with debating is that the debaters hardly ever debate about the right questions. Maybe they're not allowed to.
Then I guess I might be bit of a debator lol, I've just never been judged. Except that one time in oral communications class. Ugh high school. I won though. ^.^
>Debators hardly ever debate the right topic. If you mean political debates, then debating a useful topic is pretty much mutual suicide. If you mean debating as a sport, then what do you think the right topic is? In any case, a few more votes for the idea, and off to the suggestions forum!
Actually, a friend of mine and I were debating earlier today about the recent findings on Einstien's theory involving the whole neutrons moving at light speed. It turned into the both of us rambling about which long distance travel technique would be best based on how the Dark Matter theory played out. FTL travel would make thing interesting if the Dark Matter Theory turns out to be viable and what could go wrong with the way the universe is expanding. Alternatively, the idea Dune had involving Folding seemed like a possible viable method if Dark Matter does exist. It went on for a while. I'm going to say physics in general might make for a good debate assuming you can get two people who have a clear understanding of it all. And after typing this out, I have come to the realization that I am in fact a huge nerd...
>I'm going to say physics in general might make for a good debate assuming you can get two people who have a clear understanding of it all. And after typing this out, I have come to the realization that I am in fact a huge nerd... I concur on both points. Physics makes for interesting, if irrelevant debates, and there is no problem with the latter statement that I know of. At least in my situation...
I'm not that huge of a debater, but i have done it a couple of times in class, and i think this year i mite be doing more in my constitutional law class
Good to hear at least some classes are keeping the tradition up... I remember we did a "simplified" debate in Canadian Law Oh, god, the derping...
