Title says it all. Between the white knights and all the immaturity in this fandom, I can't blame the haters. Man, they have quite a lot of material to work with, don't they? Thankfully I don't see much of that here on Everypony. Well, what about you?
I've friendblocked several bronies for this exact reason. The immaturity is mind boggling. I actually met someone who used the phrase "don't feed the parasprites" just the other day. I facepalmed. I didn't think that was a legitimate phrase that bronies use ... I'm not claiming to be mature myself, I'm one of the most immature people I know. I don't act sexist, or talk about MLP all day everyday though. There's just some sects of the bronies I choose to disown. Ep seems to have the right crowd about it. It's okay to be immature as an individual but when you represent a group it's your responsibility to represent that group in the best possible manner. Bronies already have enough hate, we don't need anymore brought about by ourselves. Just my take on the whole shabang. You can't get rid of all the rotten apples, but you can make the good ones shine.
Oh yeah, those sexist, fedora-wearing neckbeardsmon tumblr. I've heard of those. LOL it's funny how a brony, a fandom that was supposedly challenging the whole idea of gender roles and whatnot, end up being sexist. Now, I don't go on tumblr so I haven't seen what that can of worms of like but I have heard of bits and pieces like that. They say that tumblr is especially bad. I've also heard about derpibooru having a tough crowd.
I use to like this fandom, but after how immaturely they reacted towards Alicorn Twilight and Equestria Girls {Including sending death threats to the current show staff}, I don't see it as anything more then a bunch of immature whiners who aren't pleased no matter what.
I've been fortunate enough not to encounter a lot of negativity. I'm not talking about IRL because I've only told 2 people in my family. My mom is cool with it and my little brother thinks it's kinda weird but hasn't really given me too much grief (he did seem a little taken aback when he saw my room though). Anyhoo, the few forums I've been on have been pretty nice places.
There's so many things that bother me in the fandom. Too many to list. Besides, some things might upset members here. This place has become a lot more chill since I left for 7 months. I like it. Very refreshing coming from the facebook side of the fandom. Also my grudges towards any members here have expired. :derpe: Immaturity in the fandom is unfortunate, but expected. Though I'd have to say that overall the brony level of immaturity as a whole is even worse than the anime fandom I take part in. I get where the haters come from a lot of the time though. Interacting with bronies in real life wasn't as great as I thought, but it was still pretty fun, and I love those full body fursuits. I'm going back to TrotCon this year with my sister and xbox live friend. I'm gonna fangirl so hard when I meet Andrea Libman. The thing I find most special about the fandom is all the fan-made material. Sure there's horrible things like Rainbow Factory and Cupcakes.(IMO) but then all the PMVs, Two Best Sisters Play, Button Mash, and everything in between are just amazing. I especially like SFM ponies.
Honestly...? I Don't Know I haven't really gotten a good view of every nook and cranny and every single part of the fandom, so I''m not too sure how to speak here. Although, as far as regular Bronies go, I think they're doing fine, as long as they're standing up for what they love. I myself have gone through a lot of bullying and hating on as a result of being a kinda over-on so-called stuck-up Brony, but really, I don't believe I'm like that. Yes, the show may be for girls, but when I think about it, I just feel it in my soul that life would be 20% cooler and better if all of this hating and bullying would just stop. Every time I think about the battle between Bronies and non-Bronies, I think of these songs: I don't know, I just want the world to be at peace and for all the bad stuff to END! Exactly how much is that to ask? Ok, nice chatting, Jason Martin
I completely agree. When I first joined the fandom, little did I know the size of it, I had no idea that things like that were going on. After awhile I started to see and it made me sad. I'm very girly in terms of my interests. I don't like watching sports, I'd rather watch MLP. I don't like shonen, I like shoujo. As far as I'm concerned, my interests in entertainment are mostly feminine. There's nothing wrong with that. I wouldn't try to argue that MLP isn't a show for young girls because it is. Yeah the creators throw a tip of the hat in every now and then to parents who might be watching but it is a show targeted at younger kids, specifically girls. It's a show with pastel colored ponies who go on adventures to discover the true meaning of friendship. Why try to rationalize liking something when you can just like it. I'm okay with femininity, I was called a Madame one time ... and I liked it. As far as Brony goes I consider it to be a gender neutral term. Bro might not be gender neutral but to me brony is. It all depends on what you prefer to be called. If I wanted to be called a pegusister, shouldn't I be allowed. It's all labels and I don't feel a strong need to follow guidelines in terms of labels. You are who you are and you should be addressed as such. I always like to ask or see what people use before addressing them. I've seen women get mad for being called pegusisters and I've seen them get mad for being called bronies. Maybe the fandom needs to come up with new term ... how about unicomies, a mix between unicorn and homies. - - Auto Merge - - Every fandom has extremists who do stupid things like send in death threats. Look it up. If there's a fandom, someone's been threatened with death for it.
You can go under which label you wish, but the prevailing argument in the 'Brony' community is that the term 'Brony' is gender-neutral, while "pegasister" is not, and they even go so far as to say that it's "making an issue of gender". I reject the idea that 'Brony' is gender-neutral, because I reject the idea that 'bro'/'brother' and masculinity altogether are the default/neutral. As I said, anybody can refer to themselves as 'Brony', but on other communities I see this high level of pressure that 'Brony' IS gender neutral, and that EVERYBODY there is a 'Brony', no matter what the individual wishes to call or not call themselves. That alone has created a big rift between the community and I. Because it's like they're forcing me to go along with something I strongly disagree with. In addition, even if I could see it as gender-neutral, who in the world has the right to determine that a random fandom title applies to everybody whether or not they want to be applied to it? I'd imagine that 'Brony' just started as a title that some fans wanted to call themselves for fun, but now it's like "You're a Brony, admit it or get out".
And of course you have these guys who have no common sense for social settings. LOL just look at this. Autism? You decide.
Frankly, I'm not seeing this vast sea of "misogynist bronies" I keep hearing about; the female bronies/pegasisters (whatever they wish to be called) I know are nothing if not well-respected within our community. Simply put, there's always gonna be a group of misogynistic, misandristic, misanthropic, racist, homophobic, mis-/-phobic/-ist type people in any fandom, but they're almost always going to be a minority. It's in no conceivable way unique to this fandom...hell, tell your sister to play CoD online, and she'll be getting comments of "chicks don't play video games" and demands to show her breasts within seconds. As far as ways in which the fandom does severely irritate me, I can't abide the people who treat the show like it's serious business. There are so many knee-jerk reactions to everything, whether they be towards specific episodes or EqG, that I'm just getting really fed up. Of course if you overanalyze a children's cartoon - any cartoon - you're gonna find flaws. But even the oh-so-perfect seasons 1 and 2 had their own glaring flaws, and se3&4 haters don't seem to want to admit that, which really chaps my ass. If you're falling out of love with the show, just admit it to yourself and move on. Don't perpetuate this alarmist propaganda, shouting from the rooftops that "this show's going downhill!" simply because the writers don't pander to your every whim. The show, at its core, is still for kids and their parents, not self-entitled college students in their 20s. No better way to be an A-hole than to rain on everybody else's parade like that.
While I applaud him for not giving a **** and doing what he wants, it's really embarrassing (I'm getting second hand embarrassment ). I know we shouldn't care what others think, but now that entire crowd of kids are going to think bronies are a bunch of autistic freaks. People on the internet won't change their opinions now. As for the fandom, I kinda get this elitist/holier than thou feeling whenever I see bronies talk to non-bronies. Always talking about how nice and perfect we are. I don't really like a lot of the content the fandom creates. Too many ship-fics (always F/F). I hate the Gamer-Luna crap, it annoys me for some reason. All the music sounds the same to me. Idk, maybe I'm just being an overcritical arse hole.
lol something I learned about the internet is that you unpopular opinion may not be so unpopular, yeah?
I agree with everything you said except calling yourself an overcritical arse hole. The only content I like is fan animations and art. Plus I love SFM ponies. I don't read or write fanfics and I find the whole idea of shipping very stupid. I also don't like the music at all, with a few exceptions like "Children of the Night" and such, but that's completely different. Then there's other things that annoy me like Lyra wanting to be human just because she sat like one for 1 second on screen. People take it way too far. The whole "love and tolerance" thing is so played out. I find it inconceivable that people still use that at all. The brony community has changed a lot and in my opinion has gotten significantly worse over time, but I still love ponies a lot so that's why I'm here. Oh, and according to the fans, 99% of Equestria residents are homosexual.
I went to a convention, and oh me oh my, the Beta which I witnessed. There are only two parts of the fandom I still enjoy, despite no-longer considering myself a fan. That'd be here and a meet-up group I help run. Otherwise, I've pretty much removed myself from anything pony. - - Auto Merge - - Nice fashion sense tho
As far as the fandom itself is concerned, I was first introduced to the idea a couple of years ago via another message board but didn't give it much thought. My first formal introduction was from the brony documentary called "Bronies", which I watched after developing an appreciation for the show. It has a subtitle, but I can't recall it at the moment. After that, I spent hours researching the fandom. I wanted to learn more about it. Most of what I saw seemed very positive. The negative stuff seemed to have bitter undertones to it. So, I discredited it. I know "love and tolerance" or "love, tolerance and forgiveness" seemed to be a big thing when I chose to count myself as a brony. Also, one thing mentioned in the documentary, was that being brony involved taking the lessons from the shows. And not only thinking about these lessons, but applying them in ways more suitable for the viewers age bracket, whatever that may be. It was earlier this year, Feburary I believe, that I officially started considering myself Brony. I soon realized how diverse our fandom is. I feel the form of the fandom I was introduced to is my niche in the fandom. But, I refuse to look down on anyone whose fandom experience is different than mine. Sorry for my brevity, but I really need to get some sleep. If what I said needs clarification, I'll be happy to do so later.
lionloversam Go on tumblr. Do eet. I think I heard that Reddit is also a place where you find the more "interesting" bronies. Though sadly "interesting" is kind of a common thing methinks.
