A lot of her colleagues were simply used as hostages. however because of her work and because she was the only one who treated the plants she was researching with respect, Ivy decided to 'reward' her. Zoey was then trapped in a plant cocoon with leaves trapping her body on all four sides as pheromones and toxins were secreted into her leafy cocoon. Once the change was complete and the leaves opened up, Batman had already rescued the hostages and beaten poison ivy. Though after the whole being subjected to toxins and pheromones and now having light green skin and her DNA combined with that of a plant. She felt she couldn't continue working there in fear they would experiment on her. So using her new found plant control powers she stole the money she would of earned if she continued working till retirement and began a plan to break Poison Ivy out of Arkham Asylum. Once she did she sold her apartment and moved in to work for and with Poison Ivy as a way to thank her.
Actually, if you do Barbara Gordon, it would be preferred if you did Oracle as her persona. It is kind of preset. Perhaps you could have it so that there was a new Bat-girl after Barbara had been paralyzed?
