Hope. Redemption. Acceptance. The very essence of grimdark is these things, as ironic as it may be. One of these things must always be there for the work to succeed. The problem is that the worth of a grimdark, to me, is how small the glimmer is. If you can always have that faint hope, that spark of sanity in the embers of depression, always taunting you from behind the wall of sadness and gloom that just almost drowns it out, then you have succeeded in capturing the spirit of the work. To me, this genre acts as a contrast to the normally happy-go-lucky fanfics that flood the fandom. Without sadness, one can never truly be happy, after all.
If that's the case these fanfics like Cupcakes fail completely at that too. Let's not get ahead of ourselves here, things like Cupcakes weren't written to be artistic. Cupcakes specifically was written because the creator was sick of all these Rainbow Pie shipping stories so they figured they'd ruin the pairing for these people forever, so while it may or may not be specifically a gore story but it is without a doubt just shock value. It's not trying to be anything other then something to make you throw up, it's not trying to have this "glimmer of hope or redemption." It's just a few pages of pointless gore to make you feel sick to yourself. Right now it's pretty much just a contest to see who can write "the next cupcakes," people are just trying to make something even more twisted to get a rid off the shock value. That sort of thing is only going to really work once (the whole "OMG pony gore" thing has run it's course), so I doubt any of these other ones will get quite the same reception.
I thought you were generalizing fan-fics with bad grammar/spelling, terrible story lines, too much OC input into them. I think, I prefer to see pictures along with what I'm reading like in manga or comics. owo
My mind is the best picture, since it's colors can make anything vivid. Also, I personally file Cupcakes and S.A.M. under the Slasher category. It's like comparing Lovecraft or King to Texas Chainsaw Massacre or Saw 1 though 6. These are completely different things, at least for me. Also, like most things from 4chan, Cupcakes was clearly supposed to be a troll.
I'm kinda sorta reading a Silent Hill based pony fanfic, kinda sorta cuz I really haven't been online in 3+ days. Good so far, but probably pretty messed up for people who are more sensitive to things of that nature ie: horror, gore, violence, strong language.
You would want to kill someone that wrote a fanfic? Okay, I understand this is a hyperbole, but wow, I feel sorry for whoever wrote that fic then, heh. The only fanfics I've ever read so far are Cupcakes, Le Petit Four, Rocket to Insanity and Rainbow Factory. I've never been one to read fanfics really often, but now that you mention this one, I'm now curious to see if it's really that bad. Anyway, it's just a fanfic. It's all fanon and has no basis in terms of the canon that exists. You weren't forced to read it, and I'm sure there was a warning beforehand. So don't blame the writer. It's just their own form of expression. Some simply will like it and some won't. So, next time you see tags showing whatever genre of story this is (i.e., grimdark, gore, etc.), then don't read it. By the way, there is no such thing as a "canon fic." That's an oxymoron. I've seen that term used before, and I cringe every time I see it. It's called fanfiction for a reason, because it isn't canon. EDIT: I just read an overview of the plot of this fanfic, and yeah, maybe I won't read it. Heh. I still stand by what I said though. To each their own.
Basically what ePONY said, except with slight modifications to the canon part. Everypony has their own enterpretations of the show, their own fanon so to speak. It's up to you to include this or not to in your fanon, not the author, not us, not even Lauren. Well... MAYBE Lauren, but then it stops being fanon and becomes canon. In any case, you are master of your own sanity. Use this power wisely.
NONSENSE MY FIC IS FANNONFICTION AND I ASSERT THAT IT IS COMPLETELY AND 100% BASED ON CANON BEHAVIOR OF THE CHARACTERS, OH AND THE OC I ADDED TOTALLY ISN'T MARY SUE IN ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM. But yeah basically what E said, though I would add that just because it's a form of expression, doesn't make it art - actually, how about I put it like this: it doesn't make it good art. And while I know art is a completely subjective term, I wouldn't say that just about any fanfic written deserves attention and respect for it's worth - basically as a community you should reward hard work and creativity, not so much shock value or other more cheap values to run off. But that's pretty much common sense, like how we don't listen to just anyone on the street yelling just because they're yelling. But really that seems to be more a matter of things like Spiderses. Basically yeah, if someone wants to try to out-cupcakes cupcakes by writing a story that involves Big Mac doing heinous actions with no rhyme or reason they have every right to do so, but I wouldn't say that something like that is "art."
I really liked Rainbow Factory because it was about the creepy atmosphere then gore for the sake of gore. Had me hooked reading it?
The only fanfiction I have read so far is Cupcakes...and I quite enjoyed it even though it involved RBD. Probably will be the only Grimdark I'll read, plus a couple others maybe. Then the rest are just shipping types for me.
I take back my previous statement. S.A.M should have never been made. I highly suggest no one ever in their life read that thing. I don't care about the "authors vision" anymore, that had no reason to be made other then trying to destroy something. I feel sick now.
That's what they said about Cupcakes, it's just a big game now to see who can write a bigger gross-out story
For every "cupcakes" and S.A.M. there are awesome fics like Past Sins, Of Mares and Magic. <--- read those 2, so awesome. DON'T spoil Past Sins, I haven't finished it yet.
I guess I'm just really weird in that respect. I actually had a big emo fit not long ago where I was uncertain about the quality of my writing, and it made me feel really suckish... But it didn't last very long. During said fit, I read Cupcakes and Rainbow Factory in a single sitting. Not sure why, but it made me feel better.
eeeh fanfics can be cool but people go over the edge with em. i may have exxagerated with the puking but for the most part but i scour the internet for worthy fanfics. i would have to give a hi five to a bunch but for others i have to say that i hope hell treats you well because you have killed your soul.brony out this is my firsrt thread so thanks for the responses
Now now... :/ I've read the descripitions of these fanfics on KYM, and well... that alone was enough to make me sick. I will never read them. However, I refuse to be frustrated with the fact people write these fics. I can't stop them so I might as well learn to deal with it. I can still get pretty frustrated and sick when the image of Cupcakes pops up in my mind, but I'm learning to take these fics and thoughts of them less serious. And I'm not letting them affect my joy of the show in any manner.
well idk why but for some reason cupcakes has made me avoid watching the episode "party of one", i always put my mouse over it but i never click on it for those reasons. but think i can i understand the messages that the others have posted earlier make it seem quit clear and logical so i guess i can give things another chance
^ One glance at the real canon Pinkie Pie in action, and my messed up feelings are usually gone. Try not let it ruin that episode for you. Party of One is an awesome and feel-good ep.
