Community Post #116 I do find it rather interesting that I seem to have decided that my personal, bloggy stuff comes out here. I talk about my personal life on a big ol' platform the whole site can see. The actual part of the site made for that sort of content that I have personal control over? Dedicated almost entirely to reviews. Ah whatever! It means I have stuff to impart every time I write these things and this week is no different: I finally gave in and bought a 3DS. Because I don't believe I have owned a handheld from any other company. First game console? Game Boy. And they've been a habitual choice all the way up to the Nintendo DS when they dropped the 'Game Boy' thing from their name. And then I killed by DS trying to charge it. You see, I couldn't find my proper charger so I figured I could just hack one together using an in-car charger and a wall plug. It worked for about three seconds before the smell of melting plastic filled the air and I discovered that I have irrevocably damaged the charging components on the device. I could not charge it. I found that repairs would cost £30, roughly the price of a new DS game. How was this not me? I should have been dead! Or at least had balloons stick to me or something! So, I could pay up or try to find a work around. This being me, I found that I could just replace the battery with a Game Boy SP battery when it was charged up. Screw having a functioning machine, this is cheaper. I...I have a weird methodology for what I spend my money on. I splurge on a lot of second hand stuff but brand new seems to be a strange concept to me. This is likely why most of my game consoles are almost as old as I am. Heck, if they were people, my Mega Drive, Game Boy Pocket, Dreamcast and N64 would be able to drink. Anyway, my new 3DS in shiny, glossy metallic red. Very nice. Red and black look good to me. But what do I actually think of the 3DS after fiddling with it for a while? Why did I sink £100 into this thing? Well... 1) Smash Brothers for 3DS is coming out. I played the demo and I'm now very excited for it. It looks great, feels tight and is just as enjoyable as it always has been. That plus Luigi's Mansion 2 and The Legend of Zelda: Link Between Worlds exist. It was only a matter of time really. 2) I actually kinda like the eShop. It's 10,000,000,000,000 times better than the Wii Shopping Channel. It has prices in actual money. It attempts to include more interesting titles. Sure, the only one I'm kinda interested in are Cave Story (which I already have on Steam) but it's nice to have the choice. I also think some of the Street Pass stuff is kinda neat. In England, it's a little crap because the only place I can hope to pass another 3DS is Brighton buuuut it gives a little more to cons. I get to meet people aaaand have their Mii try and help save King Me! 3) When the new 3DS LL (or whatever it gets called) comes around and I finally feel like upgrading, at least I'll have something to trade in in order to shunt the price down a little. These new handhelds are only getting more and more powerful. So, they're actually getting pretty expensive too. This is probably one of the most expensive consoles I've ever brought 2nd hand. And the XL models are at least another £100 on top of that. It's crazy! They look really nice but I'm not that fashion conscious. Or blind. A nice blank case and standard screen size is fine for me, thanks. My verdict? It's only be a couple of days but I really like it. Unlike it's older brothers, there's plenty to do when you stop playing games. There's music, fiddling around with art, web browsing, Youtube, Mii stuff, Miiverse, window shopping in eShop, plenty of stuff. The DS was all right but the 3DS has a lot I like about it. I like it more than my original DS. I like it more than both Wii's combined. It's convinced me that my money hasn't been wasted. Because Luigi's Mansion 2 is awesome. I'm having a blast with this game. It's charming, fun and atmospheric. It's not as weird as the original but, whatever, I'm only four mansions in, it's already been pretty creative with it's enemies. The base, standard enemies called Greenies have about 6 variations on them, each unique and challenging in their own way. Some times they'll attack in packs, sometimes they'll attack with a shield and hammer and sometimes they'll dress up as a mummy to try to kill you. Awesome! The fact that this is the most enjoyable and 'adorkable' Luigi has ever been doesn't hurt. You know what else? The Virtual Console doesn't seem as worthless or outclassed by a simple emulator as it does on the Wii. Sure, the Wii has more to offer but the 3DS has Game Boy games. That's pretty cool and useful. You see, not all Game Boy games will remember save files like they used to. I've found this with copies of Tetris and Pokemon Silver. The little battery inside that kept the file in memory has likely long since died, meaning that my alternative is to get it on a sleek, well presented device or emulate it, safe in the knowledge that you can't be fingered by the anti-piracy hitmen because you own the original cart. Backups are fine! And if Sidney the Cyndaquil is to survive, it has to be on an emulator. I originally wasn't going to but I've been looking for a copy of Super Mario Land 2 and 3: Wario Land for ages. 3DS delivers. To help steer clear of irrelevancy, the Virtual Console now has an optional Save State Feature. You can only save one state at a time but that's still pretty nifty for a mainstream developer to do considering the Wii VC did absolutely nothing like that. Now, if you could alter controls that would be great but I'll accept the ability to choose how the game is rendered on screen. You get to choose between Software/Game Boy Pocket mode and Original Game Boy/Green and Slightly Blurry mode just to kick the nostalgia to 11. That's nice. My biggest complaint is how the analogue stick feels. It can quite easily cramp my thumb as I feebly attempt to use it. Plus, the only Game Boy Pokemon game is the Trading Card Game Game? Seriously?! Did they honestly think that...I dunno, Pokemon Crystal would threaten their oh, so precious X and Y versions? Come oooon, Game Freak! Crystal was awesome! Let me play it again on my new, shiny hardware! Wow! I rambled more than usual...Well, time to get on with it...finally! - Site News So! As per usual, good ol' Dragonbait and chums have something like Audio DLC, right for your ears. Well, our radio. And they're updated songs. Ah, whatever. Here's the latest uploads. Do you wish you could try and make your own stuff a reality and have it posted up on the prestigious Everypony website? Or, do you just want to brush up your skills? Or do you simply want to hang out while working on some collective project? Well, this is for you. I'll be doing my best in leading it and we'll be operating out of the site and probably Skype unless there's some better alternative. If your a content creator, why not join up? You'll have the advantage of our crack Social Media team and we can also poke Ponyvile Live until they feature it, should we think it worth spreading far and wide. Express your interest right here! Ahem... THE OFFICIAL EVERYPONY STEAM GROUP IS GETTING THE COBWEBS BLOWN OFF IT! We found that we could regain access to the original group and have decided that it seriously needs some fiddling and TLC. So, we're going to try using it. I've already made sure to dump a few favourites in the Curator section and there's a Quake Live event ready for next weeks Let's Play Thursday. So, slowly, we're trying to bring it back to life. It definatly need a new logo. I don't think we've used that image anywhere else on the site since...oh boy! Long since I turned up! Further back thaaan...Even Zephyr, Foxytail. I think it might be from when Derpy Hooves/Whitetail ran things, right at the start...Yeash! No wonder Vulpine Taco tried making his own group! Anyway, yes! Try checking us out. We're still fiddling around with it but I hope we can find a few decent matches here and there. I'll try and get the rest of the staff to put up their best picks from the Steam library too. - Site News Purple Pony, being a Crazy Cat Lady is a noble profession. In fact, I would love to be one as I really like cats. It's like having a housemate you can pick up and put outside if you want. All conversations are about you and they do nothing but listen if you stroke them. It's only sexual stigma that stands between me and this prestigious title! I want to be a Crazy Cat Gentleman, damn it! Is that too much to ask? I will wear a skirt if I have to! Make up too, just so I can have all those cats! Dilly Star happens to have recently had some training in the art of makeup application, maybe she can help! She could teach me and then we can go out cat shopping! It would be glorious! If...If we lived anywhere near to each other, at least... Oh! And there's some stuff about Yu-Gi-Oh in there too. I didn't play it as a cub and I'm not fussed now. MLP CCG for me. All I know about it is from LittleKuriboh. So, as far as I know, you lay down cards whenever and shout stuff out and that damages your opponent like it's The Game The Princesses Play only with a dedicated deck. You looking for something sizable to read? Apart from my rambling thoughts on the 3DS? Behold, The Otter has taken it upon himself to analyse a movie called Nightcrawler. His mini-essay seems pretty interesting, if your into that whole 'deeper meaning to things' dealy. OK, Everypony: here is your next Hug Target: Nightlux. And finally, a newcomer to our fair site but has apparently exploded in the Blog Section like some sort of combination of Youtube and particularly amorous rabbits. RunDevilRun007 has spread his Youtube based Brony News reports to the Blog Section for you to check out. From his strangely dark and harshly lit recording booth that resembles an interrogation room within a black void, RDR007 talks about the Equestria Girls Soundtrack Release, the dissolution of the Hub Network and Brony Fan Faire's shutdown announcement. So, if you had to tear yourself away from the top quality writing you get in your weekly Community Post, you can always checkout RDR007 in his intensely lit cupboard. Or, wherever he is. I just hope they let him out occasionally. So, before I go, how about a question: Should I get a Wii U now that I have a 3DS? Do you have a Wii U? Is it worth it? Because I was actually quite surprised at how much I like the 3DS but I'm not sure the same can be said for the Wii U. There's just not enough on it I actually want to play. I am unswayed. I'm sure it's marvelous but Nintendo Land, Smash Bros. and Hyrule Warriors are all I really want on it. I'm not sure it's really worth the money. I am unwooed. I am left cold and dry by the Wii U. I just...ugh...I dunno why, I'm just put off by the idea of sinking money into it at the moment. I'm not looking to have another white box to collect dust on my shelf.
in response to your final wii u question. i had a wii u it was amazing but at the same time it was a pain because it was so bulky
I just have a plain old Wii, and guess what the internet has been discontinued on the Wii. I must get the Wii U, but I don't have enough money. EDIT: I just noticed that Pinkie is spelled wrong.
Really?! I mean...err, ha ha! I knew you'd get that little reference to... *quickly Googles* Platinum the Trinity! Well spotted. Huh...I did not catch that misspelling. Nice one. Also, yes: it is a massive bummer that all Wii servers have been taken down. The Wii has now been neutered and we now get to see what consoles of the future will be like when they die. Before hand, they just sort of stopped having their games sold in the prominent shelf or delegated to some corner, ready for the next bleep-bloop box. Now, they have a huge chunk of their usefulness removed as their servers are turned off. It's not happened with the PS3 or the XBox 360 because I suspect they're simply using the same stuff their younger brothers are using but the Wii doesn't get that, apparently. It's upgrade or take your chances elsewhere. On the plus side, Nintendo is no longer trying to brick your hacked Wii. We can have all the Homebrew we want!
