Community Post #118

If there's anything about me and Eight that we have in common it's that we're definitely 'game' guys. We also seem to be highly creative individuals, if we are to tootle horns for just one moment, that seem to like busying ourselves with our little pet projects. If you haven't checked out ol' Trevor's (a.k.a our very own Eight Star) RPG tabletop system TimewarpVortex, then I guess shame on you because the Kickstarter let's us finally see what Eight really looks like. And it turns out, he's rocking a well-suiting goatee and wears some smart glasses that you can just about make out in wherever he's hosting this awkward little video. Also, irl me and Eight star have long hair. Dunno what that says but it's an observation, I suppose.

Also, dude? If you try crowdsource funding again, I will happily make a better trailer than this for free. That's a promise!

Why do I bring anything like this up? Well, I guess it's because a little thought popped in my head in light of what I'm going to do in this post. After all, Community Posts have evolved into my little soapbox because I'm usually the one happy to write them week in, week out and I spotted a little thing of the evolution of the site.

You see, two years ago we had a bunch of hopeful musicians in charge that were looking to make decent music out of their favourite show in their favourite genres. Most of our DJ's liked to make little bits and pieces and they'd go up while the other members would service that.

And then me and Eight turn up about a year later and well, what we know is games. Eight's field is Table-Top stuff. I like Computer Games. It's the thing I know the most and the first thing I think of as a major interest. The other thing is that two years ago, the site was run by a bunch of teenagers that were rolling through higher education at differing places (except maybe Berry Punch, who is still a legend of awesome) and just experimenting. They're just messing around and throwing stuff into the ring because it's fun.

I think me and Eight are mainly trying to figure out career paths at this point. I'm in my early twenties and trying to figure out some grounding for myself outside of university study. But we both seem to be doing it in a way that strikes out in what we want to do. And, we're both creative Bronies that have a decent knack for turning too much free time and ideas into something interesting.

I'm no Table-Top buff but I've seen what artwork for TimewarpVortex there is that can be found with a quick google and, well, it's certainly interesting. Whether it strikes you is probably down to preference. At the very least, I haven't seen most of this in other places. I can't vouch for the system but I doubt it's too far from the Everypony RPG system he built for this site. I would imagine they're kinda similar but I barely paid attention as I like my RP's freeform. Dice and statsheets uninterest me.

I still say "Go and have a look!" if only because someone else might be able to spread this around. I know Eight might not like being named or have his kickstarter nonstarter thrown around but, I think he might appreciate me saying that this is probably worth looking at.

Also, this image is bloody awesome:

And there's my thing. And this is my little promised present: a little tech-demo. It's honestly not much, just a few levels, some characters and a few simple enemies but this still represents an entire summers work. Trying to program games in the way I have apparently doesn't happen very often. Or, at least if it doesn, no one ever bothered to write down how exactly it's done. So, this is essentially a tech-demo. But it's all yours with the promise of a few other things too.

DOWNLOAD LINK POWERED BY UNICORN MAGIC

Don't worry. It's virus free and won't mess up your computer. Mainly because I wouldn't want to put up something virus riddled on here because I get nothing from it and I'm honestly not that good at programming to put something malignant in it anyway.

It's free but I'll throw in some updates. Usually things like new characters, better animations and added features like moving platforms. I'm doing this because I thought it would be nice for you to see what I do when I'm not writing these or my usual reviews or hosting 'Let's Play Thursday'. It also makes sure that the damn thing is actually distributable, as if I can make sure it works on more computers than just my own, I'll be happy. It's a little doodad me and Foxytail/Vulpine Script hope to make something decent of one day. And this is the absolute base level of that nice thing I have planned.

You know what? If you ask nicely, I'll even run a little tutorial series on how it's made. So you can build something on par with that. Or maybe better...

The eventual premise is a Multiplayer, racing platformer that uses Sonic 2's multiplayer mode as a basis. The plan is to have a bunch of unusual, cutesy characters race through an environment to reach a top speed where they then explode into flame. The idea is to use skill and reaction times to avoid obstacles until you reach this magic top speed. Simple and hopefully enjoyable.

This demo has three characters and it's as simple as we could make it. Just try out the physics and the three characters. It's a tech demo at this point because I haven't the time or skill to animate sprites. Sad but true.

Controls are simple. Left and right moves. Up jumps. Z and X perform attacks and Enter changes character. The test characters are all very basic versions of Jazz Jackrabbit, Sonic and Wario that have only really been used because getting usable sprites of them is incredibly easy. They also convey how each character is supposed to feel. We gave Jazz the only projectile attack. Sonic is quick but light hitting. Wario is heavy, slow but we gave a little charge attack for him to throw his weight around with.

Now, we don't own the characters, they're only there to help us fiddle about with this stuff while we built up the game's various mechanics. Heck, the character Sonic is filling in for is the only character we've solidly got any design for right now. We haven't got a name but we like the idea of a hamster in a ball that listens to a lot of rock and uses the ball she's in as her weapon and vehicle. So, she'd be pretty fast but hard to make alter direction in a pinch. Rather like Sonic, yes, but only in terms of momentum mechanics rather than anything else.

I will genuinely entertain names suggestions for this character right now. I'm drawing a blank on her...

The only other character we've nailed down is what the Test Demo Wario is eventually going to be; a heavy-built penguin wearing various kitchen utensils as armour. He'll have a backpack (probably made out of a flip top bin or something) carrying a bunch of smaller penguins directing his actions like a mule. He'll also be able to slide down hills on his belly to gain speed, which is his way of overcoming his weight and lack of speed. At least, that's the idea. Trying to do this in a way that seems doable takes time...

Anyway, I hope you enjoy this. Please, try it out and lend your support by talking about it. Tell us how the characters feel and we'll try to get things hammered out. After all, I've been a programmer in this little venture. I have no idea what it's like actually playing with this thing. You guys are the only ones who can give me and Foxy any idea of what's working and what's not.

To run it, just download, make sure you have Java installed, unzip and then double click on the . Jar file.

Anyway, normal news and such now.

So, item number 1 is...an MLP Movie? So, what was the whole 'Equestria Girls' thing about then? I guess these are proper MLP movies? Try reading the article posted here and get onboard that hype train.

Also:

Yes. Yes I did.

Miley Cyrus likes MLP, apparently. Woo? I have absolutely no idea about pop music these days. And it's made slightly worse by the fact that my usual exposure is through Todd in the Shadows reviews. Buuuut, it's nice to have another celebrity brony. Even if it's the strange woman that rode a wrecking ball naked or shook her arse in front of Robin Thicke.

All right, so I might know a little more than I let on...

OK, ponies...I thought I told you about this already but here it is again:

The Hub is down as Hasbro backed out and now it's Discovery Kids. My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic is now in limbo for the time being. We're not sure were Season 5 will air but we're assured it will air somewhere. It is Hasbro afterall. They are a massive company. They have a lot of weight to throw around.

Next up, something I can agree with. What? Girls, skirts are lovely. Whether they compliment my figure or not, I'm unsure but they're a bloody godsend in Summer.

Ready your hugs.

That's that for this week. So, have fun faffing around with that little doodad and let me know if anything goes wrong, OK? Enjoy and see you next week.

I just noticed the download link doesn't work. That is now sorted. Your welcome.

Name suggestions-
-Myo or Mya - Short for Myomorpha, the suborder of rodents that hamsters belong to.
-Hamako - A Japanese name that begins with the same three letters as hamster.
-Jetta - She's fast and likes likes rock, so it's a reference to jet engines and Joan Jett.

Looks like your funding came a little short. :derpe:

Regarding your TwV Kickstarter - I don't think you should expect 8 grand with a presentation like that...You need to show people that it is worth their time (and money) to even want to read what you have below the video. Also those pledge amounts are incredibly jarring, way too high imo especially considering your MSRP is estimated $35. I understand that you promise expansions and stuff like that, but I don't know how much that would entice a donation like that. I wish you luck. :)

And good luck with your game Tyro, sounds like a pretty enjoyable premise.

Just 'Jett' sounds kinda neat. Nice suggestions though Ridley! Thanks!

Thanks! Did you try out the tech demo? A technical minded guy like yourself would be great to hear a little feedback from.

I did, yes. The running felt alright for what was presented though I think we'll get a better idea once you have get the accelerating to top speed mechanic going. Maybe with a test obstacle course or what have you. The attacks though were on the wonky side, mashing X with Wario for instance xP. Lastly, aesthetic-wise I think having slightly bigger sprites might be something to consider, for detail reasons. Also the frame rate was really low for me and using quite a lot of cpu cycles, while doing literally nothing. Not sure if that's just me though. Might want to run it through a profiler and see what's up with that.

All righty. Thanks! I'll have to look into a profiler and check it's running properly.

And, I know about the character attacks, especially Wario's X move. I actually left it in on purpose because once you found that out, it was kinda fun to fart around all over the place.

If I remember correctly, eat character has a double jump. But running at it with some speed should help too.
