It might pretty much ruin it for the people who are a fan of Derpy. Like the same thing the that happened to Twilight when she became an alicorn. But I still like her. But if Derpy had normal eyes, I would still like her.
Right, and it's not like the question was "what kind of message would they be sending if she fixed her eyes," just whether she would be likable still by those who already like her. Not the how or why, but what fans would do in the end. It may half depend on the content of the episode, but I personally can think of a few different scenarios off the top of my artistic author head that would cause the eyes to be straight. However, I already have headcanon as to why they're not.
Derpy is kind of a one-dimensional character. She's clumsy, she's silly, she talks kinda funny, and she has derpy eyes. That's what she is. I wouldn't have liked the character in the first place if she was anything else, and I can't imagine a good, show-appropriate reason for changing her. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. And Derpy ain't broke. Also, for future reference, leave headcanon out of arguments. Canon is always acceptable. Fanon is acceptable under certain circumstances, as long as it doesn't contradict canon. Headcanon is not acceptable without overwhelming evidence, in which case it is probably already fanon.
What arguments? This OP asks if you would still like Derpy if she fixed her eyes. I don't like when more dimensions are added to a thread that could've been much... simpler.
References to a headcanon about Derpy being the victim of domestic abuse as a reason for why her eyes were derped, used as a reason for why she would would want them fixed. Argument as in "a reason or set of reasons given with the aim of persuading others that an action or idea is right or wrong," not "an exchange of diverging or opposite views, typically a heated or angry one."
Maybe I'm missing a reference here, but that wasn't exactly the headcanon "I" particularly was going for. Sounds like you're looking for a debate, rather than an argument.
In the domestic abuse case that's fanon not headcanon, since I never considered the possibility until I read said fanfiction. It made me feel horrible.
It's not fanon unless a majority of the fandom accepts it. What you just described is one person's (rather disturbing) headcanon. Fanon is that Derpy was born with derped eyes, and is a cute, happy, and silly pony.
Who says Derpy can't be cute, happy, silly pony with a sad past? It can make things relatable. But I get your point and I would too get mad if Derpy's eyes were changed just to please some soccer moms. But that wasn't my point at all. Derpy may seem happy but we have no idea how it affects her. We have no idea how serious the condition is. If its a simple cross eyes she has no reason to change it other than making things easier for her. But if its something worse, she should get it fixed soon, lest it lead to blindness. Derpy has no solid canon character, which is why all these theories could work.
I don't think so. Basing an argument on various what-if scenarios from fan-fictions doesn't really make all theories work. I also find it a bit odd that you are talking about a fictional character's actions and motivations as if fixing her eyes really would be her own decision instead of the show writers' one. That said, nothing in the actual show seems to suggest in the slightest that Derpy is unhappy, in pain or going to be blind and given the nature of the show, it's also highly unlikely that it will reveal some dark backstory for her anytime soon. Leave it to fan-fiction authors to give random background characters tragic pasts. But since we are talking about head-canons, I'll just stick to this one, thank you very much: http://redapropos.deviantart.com/art/Fix-361651697
Not one of those theories could work since it's a show for little girls, they would never show anyone going blind or being abused.
Cobalt-Willow First of all, well, just because it was an idea you FOUND in the fandom doesn't mean it's fanon, it's just someone else's headcanon. Second of all, I think everyone agrees that it would be upsetting if they changed derpy's eyes, but I also think that nobody thinks that's going to happen. Third, your theories are kind of dark and not something that would be present in a children's show. To imply that derpy has her eyes for any other reason than an animation accident (or if you insist on non-meta reasons, implying that she got it through some sort of abuse) would be rather silly. There are all kinds of theories about why she might have gotten her eyes that way, but in the end she's just a silly-looking, cute character that people like because she's silly-looking and cute. She has no personality in the show, no backstory, nothing else that would tell us anything about her. So everything else is just speculation.
i think you're mixing up fanfiction with the canon of the show... You're asking if people like the fan made character of Derpy... Not the actual show based one... Based on what I've seen in the show I would like Derpy despite the animators changing her eyes... But like someone said its the different eyes that make her stand out from the crowd, otherwise she'd just be a grey Pegasus with a yellow mane... No different than any other background ponies... However thats what what I like about this fandom... They can pick out one event in the background of a show and create a whole fictional story around that character... When in reality the only canon thing we know about that character is they did one thing one time in the background of one scene in one episode... Bottom line... I like Derpy... I originally noticed her because of her eyes but the fans stories around her have given her a personality I find endearing. Don't mix up the canon with headcanon... We know from her brief appearance in Over a barrel that she is clumsy in the show... But that's ALL we know... Which admittedly came from the fans originally but it's been included in the show
I would always love Derpy, but if they 'fixed' her eyes that would piss me off. It's part of her character and there's no reason to mess with it. I love her regardless, but I love the real Derpy more without her being corrupted.
