I agree with this statement 100.35%. I don't understand why people like him, honestly, but then, there aren't many I like.
I don't like him very much at all, but he's a better alternative to some other DC heroes. His powers have been boring and unlikeable since the 1940s. Batman is obviously the better hero, but Superman is the poster boy for DC and he'd likely remain that way forever. Spoiler: One hero that I do hate however Everything about Green Lantern. EVERYTHING
superman and cyclops. bottom of the barrel for super heroes. I wouldn't even call the greenlantern a super hero, he's to lame.
I hate EVERYTHING about Green Lantern except the badass creed. Out of everybody that has taken up the mantle, Hal Jordan was the absolute worst. He's annoying and lame, his backstory is usually ridiculous, he has some of the worst plot tricks up his sleeves and so on. The power ring is worthy of a separate sentence, it's the same as Superman. He's not even really a hero in my books. And the creed itself, rubbish. It's a fancy police force who maintains and promotes peace with a $5 plastic ring that shoots holograms. It's just C-Sec that are forced to wear stupid uniforms and fail at their jobs. I prefer Aquaman over Green Lantern. Even the Hate-Monger. Who was actually a clone of Hitler. I'm not making this up
As far as green lantern goes, I really like his power. Don't know anything about the actual character though. I REALLY like that at one point the red lantern from Earth was a cat named Dexter who was upset because everyone was treating him like trash except his owner who had been shot in her own house. And superman is so popular because DESPITE his Mary Sue powers, he still encounters problems. That's the difference between all these people and a Mary Sue. It's not a Mary Sue because of its abilities, it's a Mary Sue because it can't encounter it's own problems. It has no faults. Maybe you forgot that Ridley. Look at my own character, Ninjakitty. Almost completely and totally invincible. Capable of completely bending the rules of time and space. But s/he is not a "Mary Sue" because Ninjakitty has faults. Ninjakitty is naive. Too kind. Cocky. And often times flat out stupid. Superman and Batman are the same way. What stops them from Mary Sueing like Triconerax the three horned Alicorn? They have realistic faults. Both have a moral code where they will not kill anyone (and screw the new superman movie. Everyone who worked on it should punch themselves in the groin) batman is literally crazy. He's depressed. He has no powers and yet makes up for it the only way he knows how, money. Superman is so used to his super powers that the second he has no access to them he can't do anything anymore. He loves a woman, but is so afraid of her getting hurt by his enemies he often accidentally shuns her. its hard to prove superman isn't a Mary Sue because many of his tropes are the original which many a Mary copied. Now I just typed this whole thing while my bowl of cereal has been soaking up milk. So if you'll excuse me, I need to eat some soggy flakes of wheat.
That does sound a little Mary Sueish. Even if a character have small flaws they can still be a Mary Sue, if your character controls the rules of time and space (which isn't overpowerd at all) they can just solve their problems with no problem what so ever.
I was shortening it. The character is like a stretch and squish cartoon. Like Loony Toons. They can travel half the world in 30 seconds, they can have a boulder dropped on them and be unharmed. etc. etc. But Mary Sue has nothing to do with the characters abilities. It's based on the character itself. You can have a Mary Sue under any circumstance. A high school rp. A Mary Sue would be a popular character with straight A's who is an athlete and gets along with everyone, and has no problems whatsoever. Mary Sue originated as a term for characters that were direct rip-off of existing characters in a fandom. Like someone making "shade the hedgehog" who is shadow, except with fangs. It eventually evolved into meaning a character that is designed to be perfect in every circumstance. Like "Princess Sunshine. An Alicorn who makes everyone happy with her special rainbow magic which defeats all her enemies!" Someone who is, by the Author's definition, "Perfect in every way."
To me a Mary Sue is someone who can solve all of their problems by just blinking, it doesn't matter how many problems you character gets if he just solves them without any trouble.
