    The whole thing is weird.

    It's a story that largely features strange and occasionally Mary-Sueish characters, confusing storylines, poorly-explained plot points, writer self-insertion, ridiculous romance subplots, and a whole bunch of other stuff that wouldn't be tolerable in any kind of story.

    It's an absolute mess, but somehow, it works. I can't explain it, but it works.
