Community Post #126

There comes a time, when one gets bored or exhausts their Youtube lists for things to watch. Markiplier has nothing left to see, your nostalgic for when you had Nostalgia Critic episodes to watch and The Grumps are all grumped out. Your source of passive entertainment will have to come from somewhere else. Something that may have been languishing away while you've had fun without the influence of the mainstream culture that your parents are consuming by virtue of being a generation behind. You haven't used that screen in years. That particular screen that you haven't gazed upon since the internet so handily took you out into an adventure of information.

Indeed, my friends: you likely just boot up Netflix.

But I'm talking about the Television. I have to admit, I rarely watch a full TV episode now. I generally don't gravitate towards it in any strong fashion like I used to. Unless I am within the vicinity of one while working on my laptop, mine doesn't get used for TV usually. It's just an extra screen for all my consoles.

'Cos getting my Burger Time on with archaic hardware is more important than watching Question Time. Besides, the only reason I've seen any of The Great British Bake-Off when it was broadcast was the cake and tea my Mum and Sister insisted upon while watching it. The decent jokes and showcasing of craft was a bonus.

But there is some reason why people might want to avoid TV these days. I mean, Youtube has it's stinkers too but you can pick whatever you like from the overgrowing selection. Back then, you had to just watch the deluge of crap the TV spat out into your living room. Youtube let's you avoid it. Remember: There's always cats.

Back when these were first broadcast, all you had where four channels or it was another Kerplunk tournament.

The Original Gravity-Based Waste of Time

So, have pity on the poor person that sat through these shows.

The Tipping Point is relatively mild on this little selection but in my opinion, it reeks of desperation on the part of the creators. After all, other shows have a gimmick, sure! But they're all kinda interesting in their own right. The Chase is a small race between two opponents dictated by correct answers. Pointless is about obscure knowledge. Mastermind is...Straightforward, at least.

The Tipping Point's big idea is a gigantic coin machine.

I wonder if anyone has ever tried jumping to get more coins to drop.

So! You answer general knowledge questions in order to earn coins to put into the machine. There is an almost stupidly random chance of any amount of money for this game as there's absolutely nothing you can assume other than a coin is going to enter the machine. Most of the air time is spent watching a flat, metal disk get pushed around slowly. It's maddening. What's more maddening is when you begin strategizing along with the poor sap on the screen. I dunno about you, but this is such a bottom of the barrel idea.

Next, let's get you all introduced to the British Soap. They're all about people living in a parallel universe were everything is conveniently stacked so that people will shout at each other rather than attempt a reasonable solution to all their problems. They've been going for decades, some without ever coming off the air. The big, major shows have been going for over 5000 or so episodes. Some have characters that have been acting as the same character for almost the entire runtime. It's like a machine.

But there's some semblance of reality to these dramas. Mostly. The exception to this rule appears to be the show Hollyoaks.

Believe me, you don't want to know the context. Just let the image's majesty unfold. It's just all moustache until suddenly pineapple!

Hollyoaks is set in a fictional suburb of Chester of, funnily enough, Hollyoaks. It's been running since 1995 and has somehow managed to reach around 4000 episodes. It's aimed mainly at people with a hangover and teenagers due to it's odd broadcast times. Also, it just seems to meander and wander with it's plotlines. Some of the examples I found were...baffling.

- A character survives a fire after being tied to a chair as the fire started, breaking his ankle, being trapped under wooden beams and then being smashed over the head with mirrors.

- A character spends a good deal of time with a ghost.

- A character encounters an alien.

- A character spends several episodes in an adventure surrounding a potato with the face of Jesus in it.

Yeah, these storylines sound amazing but remember that the writers seem to have long since given up trying as these are just the tip of the ice burg for Holyoaks. 4000 episodes of what seems to be weirdos and attractive women probably doesn't need nuanced writing to get people watching.

Well, Men watching.

And finally, one of the big boys. For your horror, Heil Honey, I'm Home.

Your Likely Reaction: "Oh! Oh, god no!"

The UK has a proud selection of shows that mock the world wars. 'Allo 'Allo finds comedy within the French Resistance Movement. Dad's Army is all about the pompous actions of Captain Mannering, a commanding officer in the Home Guard. Blackadder Goes Fourth is a sitcom based in World War I so good that I'm pretty sure every History Teacher has it just in case there's a gap in their teaching plan. And there's likely more.

This thing was expected to break into that selective club. It's just that it's a show where Adolf Hitler and Eva Brawn star in a 50's American Sitcom. Unsurprisingly, it was cancelled after it's first and only broadcast, the other episodes were filmed though. The first episode is about Adolf having to deal with Neville Chamberlain and hide his plans to invade Europe while also keeping the visit away from his Jewish Neighbours.

That sentence should have been bad enough. But they keep name dropping Nazi Party members all over the place and just mention horrible events like the invasion of Czechoslovakia. Let's also note that the whole shoe isn't funny. They try everything: Mother In Law Jokes, Adolf performing a Nazi salute and turning it into a wave when he's caught doing it, Neville Chamberlain performing 'I'm A Little Teapot'. You know, all the classics we've seen a hundred times.

Yeash...I'd take the Hitler from Epic Rap Battles. At least he's funnier and get's chopped in half.

In defence of this, the creators working for the now defunked cable channel Galaxy said:

"The Jews working on this were cool with it! So everyone should be OK with it, right?" Isn't that like having a black friend to avoid being called a racist? Anyway, I think we need something else to take our minds off this.

In amongst a weird little thread that, while well intentioned, probably didn't go anywhere near the intended realm of discussion: there were some wonderful gifs. Here:

Ah...Such joy...That smile on Arnie's face! Wonderful!

Well, it's been a while since the last Community Post and, I think January has struck again. Why?

The other two things of interest I could find were two reviews.

One is on something old Crimson considers a masterpiece: the satirical sci-fi film Starship Troopers. Read up on a movie that could be argued to be pretty relevant to today in some ways while also wondering whether Neil Patrick Harris ever did a big movie.

The other is one of mine, based on Sony Entertainment's Not Super Smash Bros.. More commonly known as PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royal. The only official rip-off of Smash Bros. I have ever seen or played. Read up on my irritated experience with this brawler that doesn't measure up to the real thing.

I'm a real fiend for the MLP Card Game so I would have put up a thing here about the new announcement but they technically don't apply to the game as a whole yet other than new ban lists.

But I will ask for help. Have you seen something worth looking at? Or worth playing? Or should be read by everypony? Does it meet the rules and standards?

Then please suggest it. Even if you think it won't, suggest it. Some help would be wonderful with the research here.

OK, another slow week. We'll have to see about next week. Because next time, I'll be looking at what happens when we try to export our good shows elsewhere.

Yes, Americans! We'll be looking at what you do to our shows to make them more palatable for you! See you then.
