As we all know if we watched the movie, the climax comes to an apex as Sunset Shimmer takes the microphone from the fallen Twilight and begins to sing along with them. This causes a burst of magic, activating the power of the elements of harmony inside of the mane six. This then allows for the magic to be harnessed and shot at the sirens, which then causes them to lose their amulets and thus their powers.

What causes me to make this thread is this: Why did Sunset's singing unlock the magic?

Sunset Shimmer was a student of Celestia back before Twilight was. We can assume that this had to be during Luna's absence, as Twilight was the one who ended the curse. Sunset would have to be roughly the same age as Twilight, or at least a few years older. As she appears in the other world, she looks to be roughly 1 to 2 years older than Twilight. Assuming that Celestia wasn't distraught by the loss of her former student, that then means that Sunset is roughly the same age range as our main character.

This would mean that the two of them would roughly have begun training at the same time with Celestia, and had approximately the same amount of time training under her. As Twilight is the element of magic, this would make up for the year or so she had less than Sunset herself. That would mean the two of them would be roughly on par with each other in magic.

I bring this point up to then reference this back to the series pilot: the mane six use the elements of harmony to defeat Nightmare Moon. Each element was linked to the mane six, and only they could use them. It was clearly established that only they were able to wield them, or so canon continues to show us.

However, it is to be noted that Celestia and Luna managed to use the elements to defeat Discord, as we saw in Princess Twilight Sparkle Part 2. Yet when Luna was banished, those connections were severed. Then, later on, the elements were restored to the tree, thus preventing any direct magic usage from the mane six.

It was shown throughout the season that the mane six still harbored the magic within their bodies, then were activated using the power of the tree of harmony. Yet that again begs the question: what exactly is powerful enough to activate the elements?

Music seems to be the force, yet we were not shown in any duration of the two EG movies that Sunset had any music ability. If anything, she took a backseat to the band and aided them at uneven intervals. Sunset is not able to access the power of the elements directly. She has no ability to use magic at all.

This would then mean that Sunset would have to be apart of the elements of harmony in some way in order to cause the powers of the mane six to activate. It was shown they were activating before she began, yet not in great enough quantity to defeat the sirens. Sunset would not be strong enough in magic to activate them, and has no access to magic inside the human universe.

We've now established that a) only the mane six can use the elements b) Sunset is roughly on par with Twilight in terms of magic and c) Sunset has no access to magic in the human universe.

So this begs the question: what about her caused the power to activate within the mane six and then defeat the sirens?

If you all have any comments or thoughts, please feel free to share them! I hope I didn't scare you guys off, I simply want to get some insight on what others believe could have caused the magic to activate.

Rainbow Rocks was indeed full of nonsensical things and plot holes. This, however, isn't one of them.

As early as in the first Equestria Girls movie, it was explained that magic behaved differently in the human world than in the pony world. The whole climax of the movie was how Sunset Shimmer activated the magic within the crown without having ever been one of the elemental bearers, so there goes your first assumption.

With that said, Rainbow Rocks makes it painfully obvious that the magic which now resides within all of the girls behaves differently than what we are used from the show. Activating it doesn't require the elements anymore. Instead, music is used to access the magic for whatever reason.

The movie also hints at Sunset still having some magic within her simply by making her resistant to the sirens' magic, just like all of the other main characters.

Also, just based on Sunset singing and playing the guitar, we really have no reason to doubt her musical abilities.

So yeah, Sunset has access to friendship-music-powers. I really don't see a problem here.

I think the last post clearly answered a lot, but I have one more point to add. First and foremost, Rainbow Rocks is the story of Sunset Shimmer's Redemption, not just in the eyes of the school, but in the eyes of the audience. She was tempted by the sirens as well, knowing they could do what the humane 5 couldn't. In a much shallower person, like Sunset was at one point. She would have taken the bait perfectly. But, she didn't so Trixie, who has no hope for redemption in the eyes of the audience, became a secondary foil.

I don't think it was her singing that caused the magic to reawaken, remember that she was a unicorn, It was her accepting that her friends were there, and realizing they need the help. It is the magic of friendship after all.

Okay Bot-chan and truedemonicfire said pretty much everything that need to be said on that point. What are the other plot holes of Rainbow Rocks that Bot-chan mentions. Given that I started with the EG movies I missed any and all plot holes so I'm just curious.

I don't care if it's full of plot holes and things that don't make sense it was still a really good and enjoyable movie in the opinion of both me and a friend of mine.

And that's perfectly fine. I was quite able to enjoy the first movie despite its flaws, and while I can't say the same of the second movie, I'm not out to ruin the movie for others.

Buuut since Lioconvoy asked, I guess I can as well use this thread to "rant" about the movie a bit. Haha. Hah.

For the most part, the movie is just really bad at explaining things. Like I said, it's very obvious that magic behaves differently in the human world, but we're never told how and why. I mean, remember how in the show it's all about the magic of friendship? Well, the movie sure doesn't and replaces it with... well... the power of music. But why? The closest thing we get to an answer is when Rainbow Dash tells AJ: "Who cares why it happens?"
Yep, that's it. And it's never a good sign if a movie downright tells you that it doesn't care about its own plot.
So now, music is the key. Does this mean that people who are not able to sing or play an instrument are not worthy of said power? You might argue that magic which is based on the Elements of Harmony might feel right at home with people playing music together, except that Rainbow Dash was almost able to activate the power all by herself even when she was at her most selfish.
And to a lesser extent: just what's up exactly with the timey-wimeyness of the portal? So an unshaven Star Swirl banished the sirens to the human world of "today". Centuries ago. Why? How? Applejack (again) even asks this, and again, the movie doesn't grace us with a proper answer.
Honestly, who needs reviewers when the movie itself points out its own plot holes?
I mean, it can't be because time in the human world moves slower than in the pony world, else Twilight would have been in for a nasty surprise when she returned to Equestria even in the first movie.

Now, the following is less about plot holes and more about personal nitpicks, but I guess I can as well mention these things while I'm already at it. Like, why are all of the characters one-dimensional caricatures of themselves? Why does Twilight think that friendship apparently means doing everything all by your lonesome self? And this after she herself taught Applejack that there's no shame in asking for help way back in season one ("Applebuck Season" anyone?). Some Princess of Friendship. But I guess that's another thing the movie just forgot (though I'm aware that even the show repeats some lessons every once in a while).
Also, where was competent assistant Spike from the first movie and why was he replaced by idiot Spike? Yeah, shove more pressure onto Twilight, because we all know how well she can handle it, right? And why, why, why is it that, for every scene that was actually enjoyable, the movie also included at least two which were deliberately made (as stated by the creators) to be painful to watch? :ahh:

Ahem... but as I said, please don't let this deter you from enjoying the movie. Though I'd appreciate it if someone could explain to me (or at least try) why Rainbow Rocks is regarded by most people as the superior movie. Because, well, I just don't get it.

I liked both movies equally. My copy of Rainbow Rocks acted up so scenes ended up in the wrong order the first time I watched it.

As for the magic I think Sunset explained that. It's intuitive enough that it evolved for the enemy they had to fight.

I assumed for the Sirens that while they couldn't feast themselves they at least adsorbed enough emotions to remain young.

This would be a good explanation if the whole music-magic thing only happened after our main characters encountered the Dazzlings, but it looks as if it developed independently.

And never age past teenagers? Also, if you notice the way they act and talk about their banishment right in the beginning of the movie, it looks as if, at least from their point of view, they had just recently been banished to the human world.

Maybe it's just because I read El Goonish Shive (http://www.egscomics.com/) but I tend to think of magic as a living thing. While the human mains didn't know the Dazzlings were coming Magic itself did and prepared. The first scene does happen just after the dance battle.

Yeah I know I was kinda reaching for that one. I'll have to watch the first scene again, I don't recall them acting like it just happened. Although maybe it's just a case of immortals not really caring about the proper passage of time? I second is the same as a year and such.

If there was anything to my theory they stayed Teenagers cause that's just how they started.

Not only that, but it was cliche as all hell. I mean, really, battle of the bands. Can't get much more cliche than that.

Thus summing up why I hate the film. It's plot has been done to death, there are more plot holes than Swiss cheese (The argument scene being the worst offender. I mean, you'd think Rainbow Dash never heard of a door opening inwards.), the writing is appaling, the characters are flanderized and exaggerated, and the villains are the worst I've seen this side of "Batman and Robin." Honestly, the only good things are the music and animation, and even then, with the exception of "Awesome As I Wanna Be," the music is just your typical pseudo-pop rock.

Some say that "Magical Mystery Cure" is FiM's low point. Others say it's "Putting Your Hoof Down." But I say that "Rainbow Rocks" is the lowest the franchise has sunk since Newborn Cuties. And that's saying a lot.

I guess this is why you don't think it's canon.

Cliche doesn't mean bad. If it did then most episodes of MLP:FIM would be bad. And Rainbow dash would be the worst character ever created. I am also going to point out that MLP:FIM has a lot of plot holes, the villains aren't that great. But I guess that's okay because that isn't Rainbow Rocks.

    I understand that. But there's a limit.

When a film is THIS cliche, has THIS much plot holes, THIS badly written villains, THIS exaggerated charcters, and is THIS badly written in general, then it's bad. Plain and simple.

I don't see how "The Dazzlings" were bad villains or how the characters are more flanderized and exaggerated than usual, could you perhaps explain why you think that way?

Well, the Dazzlings aren't good villains because they're generic and boring. They have all the personality of Skeletor. Even Sonata, who is the most interesting of the trio, is still flat and uninteresting.

Now to the Mane Five. In the show, their personalities are, with one exception (*cough* Fluttershy *cough, cough*), unique and interesting. Here, on the other hand, their personalities are so exaggerated and so one-note that they become bland. Even the Power Rangers had more personality than the Mane Five do in this film.

The worst offender is Rainbow Dash. In the show, she's a hot-headed tomboy who, while full of herself, knows when to be humble and is always by her friends' side. But here, she doesn't have any of that. All she has is an ego that even Duke Nukem would consider too big.

It wasn't good, I can give you that. But it wasn't bad either. It was meh, just like everything else that hasbro makes.
It is a movie made for kids to sell toys, however it was good compared to other kids movies.
You're acting like it was worse then "House of orphans".

Which makes it all the worse. Even "Princess Promenade," while terrible, was more consistent than "Rainbow Rocks."

You heard right, I just defended G3. That's how bad "Rainbow Rocks" is.

Rainbow Dash have the most 2D personality as a character can have, she's a tomboy who hates girly things and have an ego so big that it probably have it's own gravity field or something but that's it. Now the villains, almost every villain in the history of fiction are bland and boring, but that doesn't make them bad villains. While I hate Sonata more than any character (except for Luna), I still think that both she and the rest of "The Dazzlings" are interesting villains. Mostly because they manipulated people into doing what they wanted without any form av brute force, which isn't something that you see everyday.

    - - Auto Merge - -

I just realized this is in the wrong section.

MLP:FIM was made to sell toys, just like all the other generations before.
I don't get why you hate it when everything bad you say about it can be said about the show itself.

Why is sunset friends with the main five? I mean they are the only few students at the school who don't outright shun her, but they are still horrifyingly cruel to her. Its almost as though the friendship they share with her is a facade just so they can get in close and harass her for who she used to be. Even later as the in fighting grows among the group, they can still unite to bash sunset. I just don't get why someone would stick around in a situation like that. Really the only friendship that makes sense is the one between sunset and twilight.

Though the more I think of sunset the more holes i think of...

While I don't particularly like the main 5 in this movie, I didn't really see any situation where they united specifically to be "horrifyingly cruel" to Sunset. Care to elaborate?
