Survival Guide Special

It's been too long since I did a Survival Guide. Let's fix that.

Are you bored? The lack of Ponies getting you down? How about we throw up as many things you can do to keep yourself happy and busy?

Sound good? Yes? Come on! Shout louder! How am I supposed to hear you if you don't say something. Come on!

Oh!

Oh! Oh there we go! Good.

Hopefully there wasn't anyone watching you shout at your computer. Here's ten things my research turned up as being pretty decent.

HabitRPG
Check It Out Here

If your a dosy twit like me, your not very good at keeping track of what you need to do and what you ought to be doing at any moment. Additionally, if your like me, you poor soul, your not the most motivated of people. And even further, if you are anything like me - seriously, it's amazing we even get up in the morning - your hugely into games and enjoy playing them.

Enter HabitRPG, a currently in-development personal organiser that tries to talk you into doing things or breeding good habits by tying your actions (providing your honest of course) to the fate of a little RPG Avatar. Completing tasks you set for yourself nets you gold and EXP. Missing targets or doing things you probably shouldn't, takes off your character's HP. If your avatar dies, you loose a level and some equipment. Gold can be used to purchase rewards that can either be set by yourself or used to class up your little avatar.

I've started using it. In fact, it penalised me 4 hp for buying three Cream Eggs (or 'Cadbury Eggs' as I've heard Americans call them) for a pound because I brought them needlessly. But if I finish this Post, I get a hefty EXP bonus. Maybe it'll help you. I know Extra Credits hope it will.

Magic: The Gathering
Learn About Here

I have tried out card gaming and it seems to like me all most as much as I like it. Case in point being one of the oldest names in the business.

Yes, I succumbed and brought a deck. And then I brought another so I could play myself when I got home. Once I figured out the rules, it's actually a pretty good game. There's enough to sink your teeth into, plenty of strategies and it seems that there's a fan base that's pretty hefty to boot. If you go out and look, an evening playing cards may await you. Go out, get a deck then join a club or a tournament or even egg you mates to play you. Because there is nothing I could wholeheartedly recomend more than to play a game, face to face with others. It's that much sweeter.

That and the Computer 2015 thing is functional but boring, not to mention lacking in features from other Magic games and sinfully stupid in most of it's UI design.

What? I'm an amateur Game Developer and Reviewer. I notice these things and they annoy me!

TrotMania: Aeternum Obscurum
Watch Here

In the highly unlikely event that you have a USB Dance Mat, you'll be mildly pleased that StepMania - a free PC Dance Rhythm Game - can be played with a keyboard. You'll also be pleased to know that TrotMania is a collection of Pony Music Packs that allow you to bop away to a bunch of lovely Pony Tunes. I can't say how well the game itself works because I cannot DDR in anyway. I'm a complete novice, despite putting myself through a tutorial on how to play when my sister had it. That was many years ago and whatever sprightliness I had has likely melted away with age and too much Ben and Jerry's.

Although, Foxytail got very excited when I mentioned it so, you could always try playing her at it. Or asking for her opinion at some point.

Pokemon: The Trading Card Game
Learn About Here - Download Digital Version Here

Do you still have those cards somewhere? I do. How about you actually sit down and learn the game?

It's not very hard. I'm serious there. As long as you don't mix up old cards with new ones and make a reasonable deck with plenty of energies, it's a pretty pleasant game. And again, asking people to play with you face to face rather than computer to computer is refreshing every so often. I'd have given my back teeth to learn how the Pokemon Trading Game was played when I was a kid. I would have spent time playing rather than collecting the cards because they...Well, they had Pokemon on them.

Makes them more useful than just little baubles from your childhood, ay? And the Digital Version is pretty decent. Not utterly wonderful but decent.

Yeah, I've become a Card Game Freak, it seems. So what?

Horsegame Demo
Download Here

So...Unity, Pony Game and a Developer building in their spare time. Yeah, that sounds like a recipe for either complete disaster or lovingly crafted care.

The reality of Equidev's baby is that it's all right. Obviously, it's only a Demo. A little nugget of what this game can do but, for a nugget, it's all right. I think it needs more polish. Like, enough to make it glint brighter than the sun and be smooth enough to defy friction but it's not bad to play with so far.

Give it a look and play around with it but, be kind.

My Little Pony: Collectible Card Game - Chaos Is Magic Rules
Attempt To Decipher The Game Here

I know! I know, I've harped on about this again and again when I could but I do it because I genuinely love this game. I love it when decks work. I love knowing the ins and outs. I love the fact that I don't think I ever play to win either, I build decks to be different to everyone else, so I have the outside advantage no one else has.

My latest deck is called 'Blazing Fashion'. It's all about a mixture of adding hats to characters and throwing away cards in your hand to power up cards to score points or sway face offs in my favour. It's a lot of fun.

And this month has a new rule set that can be used for March. Troublemakers can be laid like characters but cost the same number of action tokens as their power. So, yes: you can have a road block or a super expensive but super useful 'friend' that lends huge amounts of colourless power. Kinda handy, really.

Besieged
Take A Look Here

A friend showed me this. She then said that it was about £5. For that you get a physics-based siege engine building game where your tasked with making some contraption that is expected to level a castle or chew through a group of soliders. It's excellent fun for those that like a little death mixed with The Increadible Machine.

The Nintendo Anime Channel
Find Out About It Here

Sadly, only for Europe. Because the rest of the world got steaming services and such through Nintendo TVii and we didn't (something about Nintendo getting too muddled up with red tape), we get a free App for the 3DS that streams Nintendo Anime they have lying around.

It's not bad, providing you enjoy what's on offer. Currently there's Inazuma Eleven Series 1, which is some football thing I've never heard of. Then there's Pokemon Advance. Personally, I'm iffy on Pokemon but there's a charm to it. And then there's Kirby Series 1, which I remember watching when it had it's own channel on the Wii. I watched the first episode and thought it cute. Weird but cute.

They report more being added later. Personally, I hope they add things like Super Mario Super Show or Donkey Kong Country, if only so I could familiarise myself with those shows. Maybe Sega could join in and we could see Sonic SatAM on there. Or those Mario Anime Movies I've heard about.

Or more Pokemon...That could be good to, I guess...

Scrolls
Check It Out Here

Yes! I know, I know...Another Card Game but this one is mixed with tactical strategy to give you Scrolls, that game Bethesda had to go to court with Mojang about just because it had 'Scroll' in the title.

It turns out, I like this one quite a bit. While the Card Game bit is a slant on the other 'Cost Based' games above where you have to pay some amount of something to do anything, the strategy and almost chess like manoeuvring make it a very different beast. It seems to be free-to-play, which the option of either earning new decks or putting down cast for them. There's even boosters and such to help you find extra do-dads to play with. It's a very interesting and well constructed game that I think you should check out if your interested in such things.

I find this one of the goofiest movies I know. While other Terra-Bad movies have a higher calibre of riff material on offer, I think Pokemon: The First Movie gets maligned unfairly. It's awkward sense of moralising, the cheesy line delivery, the strange miscalculation that anyone is going to enjoy slapstick against Pikachu being slapped again and again.

This movie is a mess. And deserves to be mocked for it. Especially considering that later movies are so, so, soooo, so much better.

But that's how I feel.

Right, 10 things to help you feel a little more comfortab...wait...I forgot one:

Open Source Clones of Games
Browse Here

Think of a game. There is probably an open source version of it that someone has made. Why? Because it makes modding and experimenting with alternative flavours of the same idea that much easier. Or ever to fix the issues of the original.

Want Classic Sonic the Hedgehog with the partner mechanic from Sonic Heroes? I found one. Remember Theme Hospital? There's a developer that does and wants to help you relive that magic. Annoyed that Epic Games haven't released any Jazz Jackrabbit games? OpenJazz developers agree and will even let you zoom out, leaving you to play the game that much more effectively when the original was so zoomed in, running around was a nightmare. Heck! I'm trying out Open Zelda right now!

And they're all free. Some aren't playable or discontinued but they're free. Welcome to Open Source Gaming.

There...You should be sorted till season 10 with that lot.

OK, enough of stuff other people have made, let's talk about you lot.

I know some of us like to collect mechandice of the show. My personal weakness is plushies (I snugglewuv my Twili plushie and she's so adorabilble and I have a spikey-wikey to go wiv her!) but others like to collect items made of sterner stuff. Like plastic. I usually champion the community made stuff and recent addition Diamond is sitting down and really looking at what the big corporation's idea of merchandise is like. Diamond is not happy with Hasbro but what do you think?

Personally, I agree with her that the Hasbro dolls aren't too appealing. Mainly because I'd take a decent plushie over a doll any day because that is my way, but there is this abstracted idea of what the character is meant to look like that seems closer to Hasbro designing the doll first before the character was made rather than attempting to look like the character. Which seems incredibly easy, considering the detailing is mainly in the hair, clothes and accessories, not the face which is relatively simple.

Instead, it's Rainbow Dash mixed with Bratz.

Before anypony gets saddlesores over this, two points:

1) I don't care if it's for kids. Adults are buying it for themselves. We should be allowed to grumble if we don't think we're getting what we want, especially when there seems to be no alternatives, within that context.

2) Since when did something 'being for kids' mean you shouldn't try or strive for quality? What does it say about you if you just chuck them crap because it's only a kid? Most children are not idiots. Most will likely notice. Although, most might just ignore it.

I dunno...Would you say 'Eh, it's only a child' to a car seat? Or food you give them? Or the people you let them stay with?

My word, I'll get up on my soapbox at the drop of a hat, won't I?

Talking of which, I'm doing another poll for this week's Let's Play Thursday. There's a few new additions such as Metroid Prime, Crash Team Racing and NiGhTS into Dreams which I was surprised to find I did actually own. Poll closes as soon as the show begins.

Lastly, reviewers dun go and review things. I did this thing about strange drinks but then Crimson had to come in and write a better one about Hotline Miami. Go read it.

But I shall have my vengance, Crimson! My next review will leave you in the dust! So much that we'll all be remarking "You've met with a terrible fate, haven't you?"

Ah-hahahahahahaaaaa! *thunder and lightening*

Exit! Stage Left!

Magic? Enough to sink your teeth into? That's a bit of an understatement, considering there's 5 digits worth of cards to choose from.

[IMG][IMG][IMG]

What's that? You like spells? I just like birds.
Infinite combos are great.

EDIT: You know, let's just throw Elesh Norn in. Why not.

Well... since it's been confirmed now that MLP:FiM S5 will start April 4th... I have a question.

I'll just ask it here I guess? If you guys don't mind... :ahh:

Does this website/forum share/post links to where you can watch new episodes when seasons are ongoing? I only ask because the constant struggle to find new episodes after they air frustrates me. I normally watch new episodes of MLP:FiM on Sundays. It's hard to avoid spoilers until then, but, I try my best.

Just curious...

Not officially but, ask around. Our staff members seem to know where a good stash of them are every time they come around.

But, we can't really do it officially. The Wrath of Hasbro could even reach us here.

They're nastier together. The first two together can produce an infinite combo that creates an arbitrarily large number of birds, under your control.

Notably, you cast a spell, it's countered by dovescape (you get birds), then you get a copy of it (from Guile), which is countered (you get birds), which you get a copy of...

Alright. Thank you for responding. I appreciate it. I guess I'll just have to hope I can find a valid link on Sunday when I finally have time to watch the new episodes.

I love Lich! real men try to make this card work damn it! For those with bad eyes, it reads: You no longer have a life counter, life gains become card draws, damage dealt to you destroys cards you control in play instead. You lose when Lich leaves play.

I know this is a stupid question and it's like going to McDonald's and asking for the most healthiest thing there, but I'm new to stuff like this, and I wanna learn about it.

Is Magic: The Gathering basically D&D? Where you have about 6 players and one of them is behind this tri-fold board-thing? It's being featured a lot at my public library, but I couldn't get a free starter pack because my mother categorized it as "demonic".

As I understand it, the bumph for Magic: The Gathering is that you play as a Mage using spells in order to defeat other Mages by generating mana power from various types of landscape, casting spells or summoning creatures of all kinds to either use as soldiers or meat shields. Creatures range from fellow, allied humans to dragons to vampires.

D&D is one of the most well known table-top RPG systems we have and is more like the EPRP system we use on here, only with bigger character sheets, more monsters, more stuff for your characters and set within it's own idea of a 'standard fantasy' world. EPRP on Steroids and that's been going since the 1974.

If you're just starting out with Tabletop games, Magic seems a little more accessible as D&D, while popular for many a reason, could be harder to do as it requires far more input, skill and willingness of a party to play effectively. If you have somewhere you can play with a decent group and have some interest, I'd go for it. Magic can be set up and sorted quickly...Just be careful of Legacy decks.

Considering that your Mother dismissed two perfectly reasonable, imaginative and sociable pass-times as 'Demonic' even though you can either void demons entirely or end up slaying them, I'd probably pick something else to play instead to keep on her good side, regardless of how silly she might be acting. Might I suggest either the Pony focused My Little Pony: Collectable Card Game which is challenging and enjoyable if somewhat unintuitive or perhaps WeiB Shwartz which is a anime based game that is more or less the game in terms of how quickly you'll pick it up.

And because it's stupid, it's fun!

Speaking of pony games, Robot Unicorn Attack 2 by [Adult Swim] is pretty good. I'm on rank 18.
