Now here's one for you: in pop culture, there are people who rise above the rest. People we admire, and that we should amire. They display unmatched kindness, or unmatched courage, or unmatched willpower, or maybe a combination of al three. So, which one do you think works best as a role model? Which do you think is the one that could guide us by example, who we should aspire to be?
Man, I think it's funny that people always complain about the polls not having the best options and then... this. Seriously, though, usually pop-culture has to do with mainstream media. While all of these things have their fans and place in media, I would say only Superman is really a "pop culture icon", at least where I come from. Don't get me wrong, I love Goku, Aang and all the rest that I can recognize, but most people in America don't even know who they are. Maybe it's different for some of the other people on this site who come from other countries.
Scorpion. Pros- Ninja, great cook, sets goals (involving murdering and vengence), undead. Cons- Tricked by a nerd. A bald nerd.
You could argue that. However, to qualify as an "icon" usually something has to be overwhelmingly popular and sometimes bridge generational gaps. Mr. T and Optimus Prime fail both of those tests in different directions, although there probably was a time when Mr. T would have been considered a pop-culture icon.
One, there are too many good ones in the poll. Two, I dare say that many of those are situational in how good of a role model they are.
...I just wanted to do something inspirational and uplifting after seeing some My Little Pony episodes that cheered me up. I was hoping to hear some inspirational stories about how any of these characters helped you get through hard times, or they inspire you in general. Also, I never, not once, used the word "icon". Not in the poll, not in the post. All of these characters are pop culture characters, even if they are not "icons". Also, except Belldandy and Nanoha, I'm pretty sure the average American knows about the others. So yeah...it depresses me that I try to rally you into spreading hope and optimism in this board, and THIS is what I get in return...
Whoa, calm down there! I'm fairly sure no-one was trying to depress you, or belittle your poll in any way, and I apologise if my comments have had this effect. While watching MLP does pick me up when I'm feeling down, I'm not sure I find any of the characters inspirational, personally. I mean, sure, it'd be nice if more people acted a bit more like Fluttershy, so I guess she's a good role model in that sense?
I didn't think it was that big of a deal. We were just talking about the thread and I'm sorry if this is a sensitive issue for you. Agreed, I was just speculating on the topic.
