I mean, they don't put him along with the Mane 6 for adventures, and most of his episodes have sucked. Should they write him out, like say, have him go visit dragons?
I don't think so; he's essentially the show's token male character, and basically related to Twi to boot.
The entire point of "Power Ponies" is that the Mane Six need Spike and that he shouldn't be dismissed as quickly as you did. Besides, as Toaster said, he's the only notable male character in the show. Get rid of him, and the only males left are either villains or background characters.
They shouldn't write him out, but they damn sure need to fix how they write him. Spike is one character where the comic version is vastly superior to the show version.
Spike... is at his best when the episode isn't focused on him, it seems. That said, they should definitely not write him out, but they should probably refrain from making Spike-centric episodes unless they actually plan to write him decently.

He saved an empire for pony's sake!! I'm not that crazy about his episodes either but I don't think that warrants him being written out. He's actually a more significant character than he gets credit for.
In the 80's his Character could have been written off easy but now he is that one friend that we all have that we can all confide in to give us advice or just listen. I think his character now is more effective.
Uh... no. I really see no reason to do that and I happen to sort of like him. There's no reason to do that. At all.
I could see writing him out for a portion of the story, or even maybe in between seasons as a time skip, where he can become an older dragon. It would be interesting to see a mature Spike, and I feel like that would be the sort of thing his character needs.
But it's unfair, isn't it? None of the other Ponies age during the course of the series, birthday episodes nonwithstanding. Take the Cutie Mark Crusaders, for example. Why should Spike mature, but the Cutie Mark Crusaders remain fillies? And the Mane Six mostly remain at the same age, which is either 15-16 years old, or 23-25 years old, depending on who you ask. Spike getting older while they remain the same age would be unfair.
I was under the impression that the series thus far was only been two year, so of course time is passing slowly.
Spike is bestpony... I agree fully! All of the Spike centric episodes are poorly written, with the possible exception of the episode where he went to hang out with the teenage dragons. I would really like to see Spike developed more in depth than he has been given treatment for. There is a lot of untapped potential, which I think has been squandered. We see Twilight develop considerably throughout the series, a little bit almost every episode but they didn't make Spike develop along side her as I feel they should have.
I think Spike is that oddity that really should produce the odd quip, but not be the focus. The funny guy of the group, which means the moment you focus on him he seems vastly out of place. Yeah, the most recent episodes didn't have him in as little more than a cameo nod...but really, it feels like he shouldn't be there. If there's nothing he's going to be able to pick up or quip then he's just redundant. He's also suffered from terrible writing as far as he's concerned.
Of course not. Spike is adorable. And he gives a male counter-point to show off the views of the mane 6. He's the straight-man (no pun intended) for the male viewership. And besides, who'd clean up after Twilight or make everybody nachos?
