I think it's more to less that they are not expecting it and more that there those who want to just complain about it because they like normal old Twilight. Not wanting this alicorn stuff or her being a princess. I'll admit it was a bit of a kick in the teeth to see Twilight get changed so much, but I personally got over it. People choose to stay butthurt and complain about it over and over because I guess they just like complaining about every little thing. IDK Those that actually didn't expect it, probably didn't follow the show as closely and are paying for it in karma. Meh.

Diamond Tiara is the stereotypical 'Daddy's little princess.' Her cutie mark is basically just how she sees herself. Twilight's Element was a magical artifact that formed when she made a connection to it. It's a little different.

It's not just magic jewelry, it's an Element of Harmony. From the very beginning, it was presented as one of the six most powerful magical objects in Equestria. Diamond Tiara's cutie mark is related to jewelry. Twilight's crown is made out of magic. They are not even remotely similar.
You were the one who conflated the functionality of the idea of Diamond Tiara wearing a regular tiara and having a tiara cutie mark with the idea of Twilight Sparkle having a cutie mark about magic and wearing a magical crown-element. It was the crux of your counterpoint to Ridley's statement when you said "Diamond Tiara princess confirmed" implying that if Twilight Sparkle having a magical element-crown and a cutie mark for magic made her an eligible candidate for princesshood, so too would Diamond Tiara's tiara and tiara cutie mark have made her a reasonable candidate for princesshood. Since Diamond Tiara is not a princess, nor is she likely to be, neither would Twilight Sparkle necessarily be a candidate for princesshood, or so your comment implied in not nearly as many words.
