I felt we needed something like this, really. Anyhow, what you need to do is basically what I do, make a hierarchy of characters, from favourite to least favourite.

Rarity / Fluttershy / Rainbow Dash > Twilight Sparkle / Pinkie Pie > Applejack

Pinkie Pie should be in the first group and RD in the second.

Even though I like RD more than PP, it's kind of the truth.

Fluttershy > Rarity > Applejack > Pinkiepie > Rainbow Dash > Twilight Sparkle.

Even though I have a lot in common with TwilightSparkle, she is like me boring. I relate to Fluttershy on such a deep level in that sense that I am quite anti-social and find group gatherings hard I would rather be behind the keyboard. Rarity and Applejack have surprised me by being characters I thought I hated at first and they grew on me that much. PinkiePie is funny and Rainbow Dash is well there. No offence to any RD's out there.

Fluttershy>>>>>>>>> Pinkie Pie > Applejack > Rarity > Twilight Sparkle >>>> Rainbow Dash

I'm pretty much of the exact same mindset as Setzertrancer with my relation to Fluttershy. To me, she's beyond the others.... not that I don't love the other ponies. Well, except for Rainbow Dash.

Fluttershy / Rarity / Twilight Sparkle / Pinkie Pie > Applejack > every other pony > Rainbow Dash.

I don't see the point in praising her so much.

But everypony of them is great, cute, awesome, etc. ...
And Scootaloo is the best, but she's not one of main characters.

CORRECTION: Fluttershy > Pinkie Pie >(very little ">") Twilight Sparkle / Applejack > Rarity / Rainbow Dash

Derpy... oh wait... Trixie... wait... :( Hmm...

Fluttershy > Rainbow Dash > Rarity > Pinkie Pie > Applejack > Twilight Sparkle

Out of the main six, I identify with Fluttershy the most as I am pretty timid and shy in real life. And if my hair was pink, I'd look kinda like her I think. lol I know many dislike Rainbow Dash cause she's kinda a "binch". lol But I still love her strong-willed edgy attitude. Minus all the boasting. Rarity, as I'm kinda like Rarity in real life as well. She loves clothing and fashion like I do. Pinkie Pie simply makes me laugh so much. She's a loon and I love that about her. Applejack feels a little boring to me sometimes, but as a country-bred pony myself, I can relate to her as well. I have nothing against Twilight, I think she's sweet and all. But her character just feels stale and boring to me a bit more than any of the other ponies.

Here it goes according to mah ranking... From bottom to top.

    --------------------------------------- 8< ---------------------------------------

    6th place = Rainbow Dash

    - Why yes?
Dash has the steadiest and the boldest character, and this is a huge bonus (she'd do the right thing while others would melt over a cute and crying face). She's also fair at heart (ironically): While she goes as far as cheating to win, she learns about honesty through her loyalty towards her friends and loved ones. And she also lacks the annoying feminine side all of them has (including Applejack), making the show more bearable and independent of boys in the mane cast.
    - Why not?
While she's incredibly self-contained unit and strong-headed in most cases, she doesn't have a interesting background or personality. Most of her issues and interests involve merely "be awesome" thing. Safe for pulling pranks with Pinkie Pie, she doesn't do much, which makes her an unimportant character compared to the rest of the cast.

    - Overall opinion?
She only cares about winning and winning and flying, and that is. Also, the way she's often portraited as rather manly doesn't help sometimes, mainly because you can't go anywhere without people yelling that she likes girls. A penalty? Yes: it's not really appreciated to have people speculating over a character's sexuality. While I agree that homosexuality is nothing weird and that's the fandom's fault, it's rather disgusting how fan artists and writers keep making her looking like a "lesbian" p... star. Like, it's not what is told, it's how it's told, and it's told rather grossly. It doesn't help her reputation to me. And to finish, she may be awesome in ten seconds flat, but her bragging turns out obnoxious after some minutes, and boasting about pretty much everything she does doesn't help either.

    --------------------------------------- 8< ---------------------------------------

5th place = Pinkamena "Pinkie" Diane Pie

    - Why yes?
Pinkie is a bullseye on the show. She's hyper, talkative and funny, but she has a meaning more than being funny. She's not that pointless and discardeable character meant to be the comedic element which mostly turns out to be annoying in the end (like Gir, from Invader Zim). She has a thinking brain which works even more than others' - actually, in ALL her incarnations in My Little Pony franchise she's a surprisingly intelligent character. Yet she's not your awful nerd stereotype, nor a gifted girl. A combo between fun and brains this good is the rariest thing to be found in a personality.
    - Why not?
As said, she's truly kind. But unfortunately she's dependable on others, and we like brave and bold people. Pinkie sometimes seems naive, too, which makes her turn an annoyance in serious or depressing situations. It's a complicated situation to take her, and the way she's rather wacky (she's highly intelligent and perceptive, and thus quick-thinking) can mess up some brains. I personally think she's scarier in this point than when she goes nuts after being neglected.

    - Overall opinion?
If you want me to be honest, Pinkie is the scariest character I know. The way she can calculate the nearest future is probably the reason of how she can appear out of nowhere like using a portal, and this doesn't turn out funny after a few times. No, not repetitive either. It turns out scary... Also, I'm a stern person and tend to like some more serious and ground-headed characters, Pinkie's too wacky for me. I also never play nicely, like she does. This is what kept Pinkamena from getting upper in the ranking.

    --------------------------------------- 8< ---------------------------------------

    4th place = Applejack

    - Why yes?
Applejack has a captivating personality, and as her own face says, her biggest trait is her bull-headed and honest heart. She's sweet and dependable, and has little to no prejudices whatsoover, which is SO common in young girls. She's also loyal, optimist and has a hardworking and patient way to treat others, even if she gets pushed. A likeable personality, neverthless.
    - Why not?
Pretty much everything about her is working on her farm, her business... While she's likeable, she's not enough interesting to work with or such. And her rustic ways can get into her and the opinion about her. Also, like Dash, she lacks a proper interest. She also lacks ambition, which leads her to have a too simple way to think things. As people have bigger dreams for themselves, she doesn't help them as much as they would want, and she doesn't have much for herself, nor for her fans.

    - Overall opinion?
She's not as interesting as she should. She may be a lot likeable, but even her sister surpass her because of how simple she is. But she has a lot of potential, and her frank personality is what got me. I like her tons, but she has yet to give me a reason to love her.

    --------------------------------------- 8< ---------------------------------------

    3rd place = Spike

    - Why yes?
Spike is the only boy of the mane cast, yet he is not the obnoxious little brother who keeps yelling and tricking Twilight. No sir. He doesn't understand girls but is not curious or repulsed by them, is often minding his own business, yet he's helpful and proud to be Twilight's friend. He's also a lot funny, even more than Pinkie sometimes.
    - Why not?
As he's taken as the most immature, he may be inconvenient at times. He also sounds pathetic whenever he's making moves on Rarity. He also didn't have much screen without Twilight or doing helpful things, and sounding like her sidekick doesn't help.

    - Overall opinion?
As Spike's faithful and funny, he deserved the 3rd place. And he proved he could be more interesting than many background characters. What he needs is more screenplay without Twilight. Seeing him genuinely seeing her as the sister and mother-figure he never had drove me to melt like butter in a microwave, however.

    --------------------------------------- 8< ---------------------------------------

2nd place = A tie between Rarity and Twilight Sparkle

    - Why yes?
Rarity: While she's feminine and into fashion, she's an artist instead of a shop-a-holic. And she does deh magicks, not the housemade costumization style. Hugest bonus ever. She's also the prettiest in the mane cast, from her color scheme to her style. Her voice is good to hear, her personality is generous instead of snobbish, and she's also forgiving. Even when she's distressed she's full of glamour and grace. Yet she's proven not to be a whimp or a lovefool! A delight to our seven senses.
Twilight: She's completely modest, wise and easy to work or think. Whenever we think of an adventure, we think about Twilight heading to it or dragging somepony. She's easily chosen to do things because she's so willing to do and help. Also, her books help improve her personality. She's into everything AND anything!
    - Why not?
Rarity: She may sound too sentimental and overemotional when it comes to her pride, and she's too generous, which makes her lack some self-respect. It makes her dependable on others to defend her. Also, her glamour thing and distaste for ugliness can only be bearable when she shows or gets some sarcasm.
Twilight: While modest, she can be taken as the typical arrogant intelectual girl who thinks every book has the answer. She may turn boring and predictable most of times because of this. She also lacks the boldness necessary to face nasty ponies AND a proper taste other than studying about pretty much anything. Too much of a blank face, I guess.

    - Overall opinion?
They only tied because I had to include Spike, and because both have a funny and flexible personality. Rarity is always glamorous but not always into being glamorous. She also knows that making things beautiful don't always means glitter and such. Twilight, once she gets friends, she stops being self-centered and prejudicial. She's still an intelectual, but loses her way of being overrational once she realizes it can be more than books. They both have a shine within them that makes them so special, and the show showed us this. If Rarity was in the hands of every other writer, she would be the typical rich girl who would either be snobbish or problematic. She's a social person who can talk to everypony! Bullseye! And Twilight... Thank you for being shy but socializing! No, seriously, need to say MORE??

(Sorry for the double post, had to. My post was too long...)

And now, the moment you were waiting...

    1st place = Fluttershy

    - Why yes?
She has a likeable personality from the start: caring, delicate, graceful, soft-spoken and understanding. She cares for animals and yearlings. Should I say more? If so, well, she's the prettiest girl ever, and stands her ground to protect the weak and opressed, even though this means forcing her fears away.
    - Why not?
She's not always fun or flexible, and most of the jokes with her are predictable, making her not really easy to work with. Her fear and passive personality is not always appreciated, as some prefer bolder, braver characters. Instead of pitying her when she was yelled by Gilda, some got nervous, expecting her to fight back. Fluttershy incarnates the goodie-shoes stereotype, highly disliked by those who prefer a more mischievious character. Also, her sudden burst of rage in the last episode sounded cheesy comparing to Pinkie's break.

    - Overall opinion?
Still with the goodie-shoes thing, she's my favorite. I am awfully sorry, but though overrated, she's my favorite. Probably because she's pretty, delicate, caring, and has such a flexible and funny to work with. Or maybe because she turns out funny even though being the sweet girl of the gang. Now onto the rage thing... She can have this outbursts of rage sometimes, but unfortunally it sounded a LOT out of character for her. Some liked it, some got shocked. Reason: she has such bursts already, especially when her emotions get the best of her, but if you think for a second it's like this with pretty much everyone. She HAD to lose control one day or another...

    --------------------------------------- 8< ---------------------------------------

    0th place = Princess Luna

    - Why yes?
Do I need? Well then. She's mysterious, kind-hearted. What she felt was the loneliness of having nopony, and she was merged by an evil force. Is she evil or a rebel? No, she just had no friends! I just want to hug her, put her in my warm bed and read her a story!
    - Why not?
That very melancholic nature may not appeal the bold-loving fans. And she hasn't done something much epic other than being another ruler. The prejudicial fans might tab her as Emo, which is usual when the character's sad by nature or past.

    - Overall opinion?
She's the moon, and I'm rather suspicious because I love the moon and I was a major fan of Sailor Moon when younger. A correlation? Most probably yes. And it's understandable that she gave in when the evil stroke her. It's the same thing that happened with Fluttershy: a kind and patient soul, but as one song about Luna herself says, "patience had to fade".

    --------------------------------------- 8< ---------------------------------------

Phew! Sorry for the double post! I'm done!

Wow detailed response Bamboo I read the whole thing and we have a lot in common with our choices Of course Fluttershy is first. I don'[t get why people love Luna so much though she's hardly been in the show. I like her too but only because of a fanfiction I read about her not the show.

Setzertrancer: As I said, Luna hasn't been around much. And that's what it takes for other ponies to either ignore or dislike her.
However, from what we see, she's a melancholic soul with little to no company at all. Being influenced by evil to hurt others means she was (and still is) undergoing a really hard time, so her personality is a lot more passive than Fluttershy's. By the pain, guilt and jealousy she showed in the story, you can tell she's a lot sensitive and emotional. Read this, and conclude that this is what we got from the only episode she's appeared.
The future episodes will probably show Luna as a shy girl trying to socialize once more. It's more than clear that she's not the kind to be a extrovert. And concluding that she's the younger sister and Celestia has such patience with her, it seems she was already problematic before. This, and the fact that not all bronies like Celestia, makes Luna so cool to us, Midnight Bronies.

And that was what I concluded after some time thinking about Celestia.

T.W.I.F.: Thank you. :) I wanted to point the pros and cons of every character because it'd be nice to analize each one to see that they're not as bad as one may think, it's just that I like one better than the other. I am not into "No, I like this because it's better", this sounds silly (actually, the dumber part of any fandom usually shouts opinions like those until a moderator or a smarter person shuts their fanatism).

After thinking about it for a bit, I think this is how it is for me.

Fluttershy > Pinkie Pie > Twilight Sparkle > Applejack > Rainbow Dash > Rarity

After looking back at my introductory thread, I see I was only told, out of the mane six, to praise Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash. It seems I dodged the other ones, heh. I guess I'm definitely praising Fluttershy, no offense to the one that told me to praise Rainbow Dash, I praise her too. I like all six! I swear! Pinkie Pie swear? Perhaps.

I think I relate to Fluttershy the most, because I'm naturally a shy person, just not to the extent she is, but I have my moments. Also, for some reason, I've always found more sensitive characters more appealing and tend to empathize with them more.

Pinkie Pie, what can I say? It's never a dull moment with Pinkie Pie around. I love her random personality and how she's always happy, except for some notable exceptions. She once said she wanted everyone she knew to smile too, although she doesn't know us (Or does she? Hmmm... Thinking of the 4th wall). I always get a happy feeling when she's around.

I can sorta relate to Twilight Sparkle as well. Especially with her need for a logical explanation for something (think Pinkie sense). I'm like that too usually. I need some sort of scientific evidence for something for me to actually believe it. Not all the time, but more often than not, I do. Although, I do realize that at the end of that episode the lesson was something about just because you don't understand something, doesn't make it any less true. I actually have applied that line of thinking to certain things too. Especially things that just cannot be proven.

One of the things I admire about Applejack is how hard-working she is and how she's always willing to help somepony. It's very admirable, although she could be a bit (or a might) stubborn at times. Rainbow Dash is undoubtedly a cool character, but I sometimes don't like it how she likes to show off, but, I do admire that she is loyal to her friends and even despite how confident she appears on the outside, she does show nervousness from time to time. As for Rarity, I don't know. I never really connected with her character very much, but I don't dislike her for it. Kinda ironic considering I have a Spike avatar.

    Comment on the above:
When I read that part, it reminded me of something I said one time about Pinkie Pie, how sometimes her antics are so zany and loony that it's sometimes border-line terrifying!

When I read the end of your first post I was thinking "I think you forgot one pony there". Then I saw the second one.

That reminds me how some FiM fans have ponies like Vinyl Scratch and Octavia (two other ponies who weren't in the show for very long but had absolutely no lines) as their favorite characters! Don't worry, not that I'm saying they're not allowed to like to voiceless ponies. I like Vinyl Scratch and Octavia msyelf. The former being my top favorite background pony. This just might be me who thinks this, though.
    --

    My list:

Rainbow Dash / Pinkie Pie > Rarity > Twilight Sparkle > Fluttershy > Applejack
(assuming were just sticking with the mane 6, primarily.)
