I think the point he was making was that nowhere is it written that English is the official language of this country. It's just the most commonly understood of all the languages spoken here, but if that were to change no law or documentation would strictly oppose such a change.

I'd like to second this comment. Most people will probably react to this by saying "Language isn't the same as race!" But those people greatly misunderstand race as a social structure. There were times when Irish and Italian heritages were considered black. We don't think about it that way anymore, but it's a historical fact. Categories of genetic ethnicity are different from categories of race. Race is socially constructed; it's made up. Social perceptions of race are based in cultures and co-cultures; this includes impressions of language as well as government and physical/ideological borders.
Actually I do. I know how hard it is because I'm making an effort to learn Spanish. My complaint is with the illegal immigrants who are making no effort to integrate into American society, and are taking jobs that rightfully and legally should go to Americans. See above. Also, since when are language and race the same thing? Seriously, if I learn to speak Spanish, will I suddenly become Hispanic? Should I stop trying to learn? You've got me worried now!

Second, what you're talking about is the citizenship test, which does in fact require that the person taking the test speak some English. However, there are cases when citizenship can be granted without this requirement, especially in the cases of advanced age or disability. The English part of the citizenship test is generally just a single interview that includes reading a passage and writing a sentence that the interviewer dictates; bear in mind that accomplishing these things is not the same thing as achieving advanced understanding or fluency in a language.
Currently, I am irritated by "slow" times in the HVAC trade (the lack of hours caused by this unseasonably warm winter has forced me to temporarily get another part-time job).
If it's possible for you, you could consider relocating farther south. My current job is as an insulator for pipes and duct work, and the tin-knockers I work with are constantly complaining about the lack of skilled HVAC guys.
I suppose that depends on what they mean by "skilled." I found dozens of openings in the field up here after finishing college. However, I found out the hard way that most of those places won't even give you an interview unless you have at least five years of field experience. I only have half a year of experience so far.

I'm pretty much on the installation end, so I can't really say whether or not service techs are in high demand. I can say that there's always HVAC work in Florida, considering that the folks down here turn on the AC when it gets above 80 and the heat when it's below 60. Pretty much every building has central heat and air.
