Twilight returns from Canterlot to discover that her friends have developed an inexplicably deep bond with Discord. Puzzled by how they became so close in her absence, she starts to suspect that Discord is up to something sinister.
OK, the episodes air at 11:30 AM EST so I'll ask you nicely (and anyone else for that matter) to please NOT post these threads before 12:00 PM EST. I know I sound like a broken record but I know I'm not the only one who enjoys trying to be the first to make a thread after the episode. So can you help a brony out here? Anyhoo... ON TO THE SHOW!! I think it's clear that Discord still has a LONG way to go before he's got this whole friendship thing licked. I know Sparky's not the most fun out of the mane 6 but it was still a little bit of a dick move to not even invite her. She did her typical jumping to conclusions bit but it wasn't as overblown as it could have been and I like how she turned it around on him in the end. Sparky and Discord both learned a little something at the end and I think it worked pretty well. The only tidbits I really have other than Starlight Glimmer popping up again (I just saw that on EqD) are the reference to Bob Ross and of course, Pinkie Mcfly!!!! Overall, it's a 7/10 from me!!
All in all I didn't think this was a bad episode. I mean it was ok and I loved Discord being who he is in it. Did feel bad for Twilight the entire time. But I wasn't really too impressed with the episode as a whole. However, did any of you catch Starlight Glimmer in the background spying on the Mane 6 and Discord? If not here is a pic This is what I was most excited about the episode! I jumped out of my seat when I saw it haha. They are gearing up for the Season Finale apparently lol
This was a pretty good episode, enjoyed some of the jokes. It is ridiculous for Discord not inviting Twilight with the rest of her friends. Noticed some references as well. What I didn't see was Starlight Glimmer in the background. I'd give it a 7.5/10.
I enjoyed it, but I wonder what Discord is up to. It seems that he enjoys manipulating Twilight, and I'm convinced he has a reason for doing so, but I'm not sure what it is. Yet.
Perhaps Celestia wanted him reformed so he could REALLY test Sparky's patience. He seems to do a lot of that too.
This... isn't going to be good... Yeah... I can't say anything nice about this episodes. At all. I just can't sorry. Once again it may be because I don't like Discord. But Discord OBVIOUSLY did this on purpose. I doesn't matter if Twilight learned something from it or not. It really doesn't. The ending was about the only satisfying thing for me. Because turnabout is fair play. Worse episode of the season thus far for me. If not possibly the worse episode of the whole series. I'm going to try to explain why I hate Discord so much after this. I already typed it out. Stay tuned for that.
That or they didn't go into an episode of a kids' show looking for things to pick apart and gripe about. Please stop bashing others for liking episodes that don't click with you.
It's always hard to tell these days, given the rather troubling trend of self-proclaimed 'brony analysts' declaring "WORST. EPISODE. EVER." on anything that doesn't quite measure up to their very particular standards of writing. At what point did the fandom decide MLP needs to be a ponified GoT to be enjoyable? Must've missed that memo. Buzz Killington horse is not amused.
Well, NOW I know why I didn't see Starlight Glimmer in the bushes... MY DAMN TV CHOPPED OFF THE EDGES OF THE SCREEN!!!
So the two friends I've watched this episode with both agree, this episode isn't just an ordinary bad, unfunny, unentertaining episode. What makes this one special is that instead of trying and failing to be funny and entertaining, it actively tries not to be. It's the first episode specifically written to make the viewer uncomfortable instead of amused. It goes without saying that the jokes weren't funny, they were deliberately meant to leave the audience feeling excluded and uncomfortable. If the audience found the jokes funny, the episode would fall apart. So it's not funny, but it's not meant to be funny. It's outright stated to the audience that you won't find this funny because "you had to be there". Similarly, every scene of the episode is intentionally trying to make the viewer feel confused and discomforted by what's happening. For the first half, the viewer only knows what Twilight knows, so she's naturally the one we're expected to empathize with when she spends the whole time feeling excluded, desperately trying to see the humor and sense in what's happening only to come up short. It doesn't help when she starts acting insane, as we're then forced to empathize with Spike and the mane six, who at the time are also feeling... baffled and uncomfortable. Not once is the audience offered an opportunity to share in the joy of what's happening, instead the episode is intended to make the viewers feel like they had a bad time. Heck, the episode even indirectly insults the viewer by the end. Partway through, Twilight brings up how unusual and out of character it is for her friends to be so chummy and amused by Discord, particularly Applejack and Rarity. Considering how actually weird that is and how it's presented, the audience is naturally meant to agree with her. And yet, during the conclusion the events are stated to be completely normal, and Twilight's suspicion is now presented as being entirely due to her jealousy over not having been there. Twilight agrees and the strangeness of the events is considered nonexistent. So where does that leave the audience who agreed with her logical suspicions when the ponies begin to joke about how stupid and silly it was to think something weird was going on? I certainly wouldn't call this the worst episode or anything, in the end it's more or less harmless. But it's certainly a milestone to say the least, the first episode of the series entirely intended to not be enjoyed, to make the audience feel excluded, and to deliberately act in opposition to entertainment.
