I prefer the authentic Mexican ones, but it seems safe to assume that this sea pony ruined both variants by making them soggy.
The Tex-Mex version was invented by Mexican-Americans, so it technically is no less authentic than the soft corn taco you'd get in Mexico. Just like Italian-American food was invented by Italian immigrants, and what we consider to be Chinese food was invented by Chinese immigrants. Ethnic dishes tended to get Americanized due to the unavailability of traditional ingredients, as well as the easy availability of new and different ingredients. Interestingly, the changes to the dishes tend to be regional. For example, zucchini is a common ingredient in Chinese cooking in the western US, where it's easy to grow and readily available. In the eastern US, zucchini is almost never used in Chinese restaurants.
This definition is incredibly loose. There are differences between an original thing and things derived from it, in spite of their interconnections. I happened to develop a strong preference for what I found in Mexico itself over the Tex-Mex things we have over here (now if someone would only wipe out those drug cartels so I could vacation in Mexico more safely...). My initial reference was to what is actually found in Mexico, not what is considered to be Mexican food by many here in the US. This may be the case, but there is also a qualitative difference between the authentic original and what may have derived from it.
I hate zucchini. I like Chinese noodles and egg rolls. As far as Mexican food goes, I love me some chicken enchiladas with refried beans and queso!!
I've always considered the "melting pot" phenomenon to be the most fascinating aspect of American culture. Dozens, if not hundreds, of different cultures integrating and intermingling, trading ideas and traditions, and weaving the best of what each culture has to offer into something uniquely American.
We should start by legalizing and taxing marijuana, a move which, in addition to creating revenue for the federal government, would also have a huge impact on the cartels.
