Huh. Well, that episode happened. These are not lessons that kids need to be learning. Praising a child for every little thing, regardless of whether or not they've actually accomplished anything, is ridiculous and unhealthy. You just need to look at an average millennial to see what can happen. There are just so many better ways this episode could have been done. This episode had a few good moments, mostly in the Scootaloo/Rainbow Dash interactions, but overall, I'd say the bad outweighed the good. 2/10
...Wow, and I thought my parents could be embarrassing at times. Not that I have anything against RD's parents or anything, but... yeah, they could stand to dial it down a notch or two. Or three. Or four. Or... *shrug* Oh, well. The episodes can't all be winners.
First of all, I wanna say that I did like this episode. But honestly, I have to agree with Rid on this. I had supportive parents but they didn't have anything to commemorate the first time I wiped my ass all by myself either. I don't blame Dashie for not telling her parents about becoming a Wonderbolt and ultimately snapping at them. I think the ending could have been handled a little better by having it be more or less a compromise between praise and restraint. Yes, you should praise your kids when they accomplish their goals but also teach them not to rest upon their laurels. And for Celestia's sake, DON'T SHOOT OFF FIREWORKS WHILE THEY ARE FLYING!!!!! Seriously though, it wasn't about her taking them for granted. It was more about, "Thanks for your support but tone it down a bit." So, some funny moments but the ending and moral just didn't really seem to be appropriate. Overall: 4/10 (Not gonna lie, most of that is Dashie bias. )
There were some really nice moments between Scootaloo and Dash, though. Glad to see that the whole sisterhood thing hasn't fallen to the wayside.
Also, Scoot revealed that she never really had any, shall we say, parental support. It was a very ambiguous statement that was no doubt done intentionally by the show's creators. Clever fan fuel for theorists if you ask me.
I agree that this episode should have been handled differently and not really something you want kids to learn, especially that they will be praised for everything little thing that they do. But I did like learning more about Dash. Seeing her parents, kind of made me see and understand why Dash is the way she is. However, the end with Scootaloo did pull on my heart strings a bit so I liked it even more because of that. All in all, a good episode...but certainly not the best. Also leaves me with more questions than answers...like... WHO THE HECK IS THIS STALLION?! I give this episode a solid 5/10
I'm going to go with cool uncle. Dear Princess Celestia, Today I learned that Scootaloo loves getting all up in your business. Also, Rainbow Dash and her family should have some court appointed family therapy sessions. Those pegasi have issues. Please send cake. Yours Faithfully, Dragonbait
Here we go again. With yet another viewer discretion warning. But... maybe not so warranted this time. Just in case though. Spoiler Have I mentioned I LOVE character development and character backstory? Even if I have I'll say it again. I LOVE ME some character development and character backstory. We finally got to meet Rainbow Dash's parents. Also... I'm glad Scootaloo looks up to Rainbow Dash and all... but... with all the pictures she was taking... it just felt... more stalker-ish to me instead of her being an inspiration to her. Could just be me though. Not that it made me hate this episode or anything. There were LOTS of funny moments in this episode that made me laugh quite loudly and applaud. It was just full of hilarity. The lesson was also a sort of another easily relatable lesson. I think everyone has had their fair share of 'embarrassing parent' moments and the same could be said for parents with 'embarrassing child' moments. It's always to good to have parents who support you in your dreams and goals. It's also good for them to continuously support you so you can keep going even when the going may get tough and it may seem impossible to achieve your dreams and goals. Parents are always there to support you and give you the support when you need it most so you never give up in achieving your dreams. That's pretty much what this episode was about. Rainbow Dash's parents were just the greatest in this episode. The problem was obvious and I liked that we got more Rainbow Dash character development. Not surprisingly the lesson was nailed when Rainbow Dash's parents felt embarrassed when Rainbow Dash tried to make it up to them for yelling at them. Also the bit at the end with the same support for Scootaloo when she gave her report was just GREAT and tied it all together. It actually saddened me to hear that Scootaloo doesn't have that same support. Looks like either her parents are jerks or maybe fan-canon is correct and she doesn't have parents? Maybe we'll find that out eventually as well. Either way... I just REALLY loved this episode. ALL OF IT. It was just AMAZING. 10% increase to stay just didn't cut it. Guess what everyone? Current Status: Stay: 70% Leave: 30% Yep. Maybe I'm worrying for nothing? Though... my bad feeling hasn't really changed unfortunately. It's basically become a 'wait and see' situation at this point. Still though. It's getting better. Slowly and surely.
I'm actually worried about Derpy here. This episode is saying that the reason for her eye problem is because Rainbow's sucesses kept shooting down her own sense of self-worth. I do wonder...did Rainbow ever apologize to Derpy?
I think what the episode was actually saying is that Derpy was a promising young flyer until she developed a degenerative eye condition. Notice that she's happy with whatever place she takes, and that her eyes get more crossed with each passing year. There was also a flashback scene in "Where The Apple Lies" that showed a teenage Derpy in the hospital with bandages over her eyes.
