The Mane Six are at the Endgame. Celestia has retired. Luna has retired. Twilight Sparkle, Rainbow Dash, Applejack, Pinkie Pie, Rarity and Fluttershy are the new Emperors of Equestria. And Yona, Smolder, Gallus, Silvestream, Ocellus and Sandbar are the new guardians of Equestria, inheriting the role of protectors of the dimension, of emmisaries of friendship. King Sombra rises from the grave as the Mane Six prepare for the final battle... ...they prepare themselves for the beginning of the end.
Isn't the Mane Six summoning the Rainbow of Harmony without the Elements a cheat? Yes, the Human Seven can do that, but magic works different on Earth than in Equestria (and from "Legend of the Everfree" onwards, they DO have a conduit for the power of the Elements, namely the Geodes, making this a moot point). And yeah, there's the whole "Rainbow Power" thing in "Twilight's Kingdom", but that was a temporary power boost. There's no precedent in the show for the Mane Six to summon the Rainbow through sheer force of will.
I'd call it less of a cheat and more of a Next-Tier Powerup (Or "Next-Tirek Powerup", as the case may be). For all we know, it could've gotten to the point where they don't really need the Elements anymore to utilize it. And even if there isn't a precedent, it doesn't mean it's unlikely to happen. It might get explained later (either by the show itself or someone associated with the show via Twitter), it might not, but it doesn't make what happened to Sombra any less welcoming.

Although, without them or the tree is Starswirl still having to fight back the Everfree Forest on his own? The princesses just kinda left him there. He said that he and his other five used to do that before the tree was created. Are they stuck doing that again? Hopefully they resolve this in an upcoming episode...
