Say, I tried to add you on Skype but it's not picking you up for some reason. What I typed was "SR20DETDOG" and then "sr20detdog" but nothing.

I want a bit of hope to grab on too... But it has to be something solid--has to be. Man, this just about reflects the state of affairs with the uselessness and futility of politics to the extent it's almost disturbing. I've given up hope that this is something the staff is able to do and it is something that rests with us. What would that be? When you find a person who is needy, come to his rescue before the staff do. All the staff know to do is give off warnings and ban, often ending up in a vicious cycle. We on the other hand could listen to such people and get them to find some peace. Anyway, I'll continue laying it out on another occasion since you kinda caught me at a bad time. See you later, Doggy.

Sorry to say this but I think that is a lost cause. The staff have pretty much reached the full capacity in their ability to contribute to EP. If there's any direction that this place could go on their part, it's down.

I think that the greatest potential for new loyal members lie in those who seek comfort and nurturance here. Give them good will and they reciprocate. But honestly, I think we're very much at the mercy of the people who happen to come around and the attitudes they hold. I've come to see the improvement of EP in any major way as a total lost cause. We are a community only in the sense that we share a common interest and this is in fact a forum on the internet where there is free speech under certain limitations. I think you're an atheist so I will say you may as well pray that things are going to get better because that's really all the control anyone including the staff have.

You know, honestly I see you as being one reason to see a glimmer of hope for EP.

Nice! That sounds like a great day to me. Wish I had more like that.

It just so happens that I'm reading this as I wake up on the day itself, so you were on time!

      Thanks a bunch! :)

Wow, I didn't think about the hydraulic lines getting twisted. Good that you brought that up! Perhaps a start would be to limit the rotation angle to 360°. Although since the wind direction rarely deviates from blowing from east-north-east, it might not be that much of an issue.

I get what you mean with electric cars. Over here, high quality sealed lead-acid batteries are a financially sound choice but there's that whole thing about lead pollution once discarded... Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries seemed good at the start as they are boasted with having a high cycle life but ends up falling short. It'd be nice not to have that putrid burnt diesel smell...

Speaking of cars, how much have you looked into waste vegetable oil biodiesel? It could be interesting but I'm thinking that waiting for businesses to collect waste vegetable oil and making it into diesel for the pump isn't the right way to go about it.

There is another advantage to using the hydrostatic transmission to wind turbines that I can recall. It's a Continuously Variable Transmission meaning that the manipulation of torque and rotation speed can be adjusted continuously by something like a lever as opposed to discretely as with a gearbox. What this can enable I think is improved efficiency of the turbine as well as being able to generate usable electricity at lower wind speeds. Though I hear the hydraulic fluid alone is quite expensive and that automatically controlling the torque and speed ratio is tricky.

From what I've read, we might see this sort of transmission in future internal combustion engine cars since the engine itself is a mature technology with very little room for improvement left.

Well, been thinking about a home project where I build a wind turbine with the blades, housing and tower out of wood. However, there's a crucial component that goes between the shaft spun by the blades and the shaft that powers the generator which is normally a gearbox. Well, I realized this is more of a mechanical engineering problem rather than an electrical one so I was wondering if you might be able to give some tips. Namely with a different transmission I'm looking at which is the Hydrostatic Transmission, the split kind. It'll be handy since it can enable me to put the generator on the ground instead of the housing.

Happy birthday, doggy! Though I bet it's already over all the way in Australia.

Say, a little something else... You said you were in mechanical engineering or are planning to go that direction, right?
