So i've heard that in general, the brony community frowns on alicorn OC's. I'm just curious if this is true and if so then why? Are they just too OP in roleplay? do people not like them cause alicorns are supposed to be special and royal? i want to know.

Basically in a nutshell is due to the special/royal part, but even then, if they are special and royal, people tend to frown on them. I personally think it's due sort of system to believe alicornius are of a canon-istic value, and can only stay if they are actual canon characters, not OCs. Personally, I see wayyyyy too many Alicornius OCs and it's so tiring to view, I mean, why can't folk just settle for something that doesn't have to be of such OP value? Geniunely, the race symbolizes power or a unique quality so far Canon-wise.

Personally, I think people frown upon them due to being so common for some reason, and also their canon value, as said.
W/e though, I'm in pain from an overdose of Belgian waffle and maple syrup, I can't think straight. Blargle.

I don't frown upon them, to be honest. Most people that use an alicorn OC that I've RPed with know not to make the characters too OP, and if done right, alicorns can be great~

Though I can understand the flak they get, a lot of people make Mary Sue characters and claim it's 'fine' because they're alicorns. So there's that.

Alicorns are the supreme magical being of the pony world. This is canon as Twilight went through excessive amounts of trials and had to become one of the most powerful magic users ever, in order to become one.

Also, they are royalty. This is also canon. Where is your alicorn royalty from? It can't be Equestria, that's taken. So is the crystal kingdom.

And as far as we know, alicorns can't be born, only made by changing a normal pony. (since we don't know where celestia, luna, or cadence came from)

Usually they're just bad back-stories and poorly built characters, or they are just blatantly too powerful. Alicorn OC's depend entirely on the creator's ability to be creative.

nerf pls. but on a serious note, the issue with alicorn ocs is that they have little to no effort put in to them. alicorn ocs can be great, because although all the other races have some sort of unifying personality trait based on the predispositions of their race, alicorns are generally unique individuals and can be made in to truly unpredictable characters. sadly, everyone that actually makes alicorns always do so because they just want to be able to do whatever for whatever reason. and not work around the limits they have to build in if they use any other race. so you get generic red and black alicorn ocs that are celestias brother in law or something. this wouldnt be an issue if not for the infinite powers and whatnot because then there is no inherent advantage in making your oc an alicorn. in conclusion, nerf pls

Typically, it's the same reason people don't like a lot of Sonic OCs. Or a lot of fantasy OC's that attempt to act like Dante from Devil May Cry but then play the character completely straight, forgetting the fact that the character only usually works as a parody.

Personality is one and the desire to create a dominating character is another. An Alicorn is an almighty creature within the world of MLP:FiM; they're taller and appear to have the advantages of both Unicorns and Pegasi, but usually boosted greatly. They are more powerful than everything and not all Roleplayer's look to play within restricted rules and fallacies of a limited character within a world of mechanisms that the character has to exploit to achieve a goal.

Even in the show, Twilight can't ever just magic everything away. Fluttershy can't just pull something out of her flank and have it fix everything. There is a line of actions the characters take to achieve the end goal.

But, there can be a type of Roleplayer that is looking for easy gratification through simply being awesome, rather than earning it through a genuine attempt at solving a problem. They are considered overpowered because they tend to only be interested in reaching the point when they're character is congratulated and they feel awesome.

An Alicorn within the MLP universe, tends to be that goto character base because the race is associated with power. Plus, they can fly and cast spells. They can fix almost everything!

But, this is why people associate more with Batman than Superman usually. Superman just fixes stuff, like a bad roleplayer. They dress it up as best as they can but he's rarely been as interesting as Batman. Sure, he tends to have an amazing knack for preparation but he still struggles. He never gets out of situations completely scott-free. There is a price, he can't just do things simply or straight forward.

However, Alicorns can be really interesting characters if done right. Some fights might have to be with something even greater in magnitude and threat than an Alicorn. A dragon conquest, for instance (see: 'The Quiet Place' by Aynine). Or, bring the all powerful creature down a few notches. A weakened Alicorn, maybe with a snapped horn would be a good start as they'd now have to save the day without magic. A little extra thought can make characters like this more than just a joke.
