Hey guys, nothing too formal just a quick update on things to watch out for as I continue to tweak the site (hopefully to your liking). I know we've had a few problems with Vbulletin Albums and animated .gifs - I've been installing and setting up a 'resource' or 'downloads' section - call it what you will, either way uploading gifs this way works 100% as it should, animated, same size and all! That's a bonus but not the only reason behind this, I also hope to allow all you pony fans to upload an array of different resources from images to comics, videos and music files and in the future perhaps even games, flash files and pony related software (that pony on your screen program springs to mind if you need an example). Anyway this'll be along shortly but will probably be restricted to images for a week or so, just to see how things go, if you guys like it and/or want to use it. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Secondly (and finally) I've noticed the forums could do with a rejuggle, there are a lot of topics and threads that I find people (including myself) are unsure where to post them for lack of an apparent appropriate forum and in other cases forums that are just sitting collecting dust because they don't represent a common topic or interest at this time (sorry Lauren Faust forum looking at you there). Anyho, feedback on either is appreciated and will most certainly be taken into account, I can't give you any more detail than that just yet and I know this must be the worst announcement ever (wall of text much!) but I'll hopefully follow up with a nice tidy one sometime soon (on a similar agenda to!). Thanks Bronies
*Colorful Rainbow. You. DivX player. DivX player just ruined my comic. It was assigned as my active window (You know, start bar, the active window). I know, because I Watched some episodes of MLP to find good pics to Print-screen. So, I found the last one I needed, THE LAST ONE - I print screen it, and instead of clicking (Close button), i use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + f4 (it closes your active window, if some of you bronies don't know what it does). And instead of it closing my DivX player, it closes my Photoshop project and Photoshop with it... And you can guess how I reacted when it closed my beloved Photoshop. *Colorful Rainbow You, DivX player. The fact that you suck so bad won't stop me from finishing that comic. Consider yourself ELIMINATED. *opens up the Control Panel* DAMN I need a good Video playback program that I can use for print-screening stuff (Windows media player, Winamp don't work like they should... IT doesn't print screen it right)... anyone knows one? It doesn't have to be free, it needs just to OWN and KICKASS. *Some of you might know, some of you might not. Colorful rainbow is a curse word invented by us. Derpy is the first one to use it, so... Kudos to you, Derpy.
I fail to see how that has absolutely anything to do with the title of this thread Jaret... Back on topic please.
...well, reporting on my comic that I wanted to Upload. I can nitpick and say that Upload has something to do with Download :3 Anyway... Yeah, I guess we have a comic thread after all, so, you've got a real point.
That's what's taking so long I'm trying to work out some way of allowing users to view/play the video or music file there viewing (through a media player on the page) - It's not quite as easy as it sounds though
Btw, when Jaret was testing it earlier - it didn't allow anything larger then an emoticon to uploaded
I KNEW it had something to do with the PC! It actually works when I try to upload it from this PC (one of my better PCs). The thumbnail looks quite nice as well. Here's the link. Ok, it's either my PC is not functioning right, or Grey used his Admin magic to fix it. Is it, Grey?
I haven't touched it today =/ And yeah it seems only small .gifs have weird thumbnails so far. Nice comic btw ^^
So how exactly are we going to moderate the downloads section? First instinct is for everyone to upload whatever random things they have in their collection, which obviously isn't the right way to go about things. We should be sure to make sure that the uploader is the original creator of the product
http://www.everypony.com/forums/rules.php Spoiler: Download Snippet Download Section: The following rules & Regulations should be considered alongside the above when making use of our resources/download section. `Users may upload a maximum of 100MB per day. `Users have no cap on how much they can download. `Users may rate and comment on all files but must take into account posting and thread rules, this of course should go without saying. `Users must not upload illegal, pirated, stolen or similarly classified content. `If an up-loader is not the creator of any piece of material they MUST credit the original Author and/or license/copyright holder in either the field space provided or the description. `Up-loaders must also have the express permission of said Author or copyright license holder in order to retain the upload, any external claims will result in an immediate removal of material without notice or explanation. `Uploaders must understand that any content uploaded is accessible to any of the forums registrars all of whom will have an undisputed right to download it for personal use. `No harmful, malicious or 'coded' material is not to be uploaded personally. If you wish to upload similar material a staff member must be contacted. This includes but it is not limited to files with the following file extensions: MSI, EXE and SWF. `The Everypony staff reserve the right to delete, modify, move and lock any or material uploaded to the resources section with or without prior notice to the Authors/Uploaders. Refusal to comply with any of the above rules may result in negrepping, download/upload restriction, removal of the users resources or in extreme cases site banning. So people can upload other's work and just credit them as the author, if anyone complains and proof can't be made we take it down, simple as There are a lot of fancy moderation techniques I'd like to look into but I think right now, you guys just want the section - were not so big yet so moderation shouldn't be too much of a problem and feedback on the resource product itself is more important. Picture Section is Up! I'll try and write up some proper rules soon but for now if you guys could follow this method; Upload pictures in 'packs' - don't upload each picture seperately, when prompted to upload a file upload either a .zip or .7z archive containing all the images in said pack or a .txt file listing the images in the pack. Once uploaded navigate to your file and via the 'add image' upload system - upload each image seperately. So let's go through that again: DON'T UPLOAD a picture when creating the file, upload an archive or 'index' text file, once that is uploaded use the ADD IMAGE function to seperately add each image individually! The reasons behind this are multifold but the main reason is tidyness and organisation. Let's say you make image comics, if you have one pack called 'Grey's Comics' you add all your comics to a .zip - upload them to the downloads section and then add each image separately via the add image function - this means people can find that one 'file' but choose to download one or all the comics in a couple of clicks. If they were all uploaded separately they might not even find them, let along be bothered downloading them all If you wish to add more images to a pack simply locate the file, click edit upload a new archive/txt file with all the files/a list of files (overwriting the old one) and then add any new images separately via the add image function, note that previously added single images will remain when the archive is overwritten.
Now what about in situations where the original author is ambiguous? Say someone wants to upload a pack of animated avatar gifs taking from scenes from the show, these are often just laying around the internet randomly with no name mentioned, and in many cases are particularly simple for just about anyone to make. How would these go about being credited? The most obvious way I could see would be crediting Hasbro, as it's caps of their content in the first place. That brings up another point, what about say screencaps (like for meme images) - how exactly would you go about crediting these? Once again seems like Hasbro would be the one to credit, but we should elaborate on this sort of thing now. As to what qualifies something for the picture section anyway? Obviously something poorly drawn in pencil won't be accepted, but what about screencaps (as I've mentioned before), these take even less effort to make but create a presentable final image - if they are/aren't accepted, then what about animated gifs of captured moments, which are also of the show but more complicated to make. Exactly how much effort on the creators part must be evident in the piece for it to work? Obviously we can't just have everypony dumping whatever random screencap they find into the section, else it'll simply turn into a glorified meme database.
