Yeah, it really depends on the situation. I've heard a couple of horror stories of bronies getting beaten up when buying ponies in stores, so I can understand why people would want too keep it private. I'm not a afraid of any physical abuse coming my way because of my bronydom, it's really not like that where I live. I'm more concerned about the impact it could have on my social life and the friendships and relationships I've been building. I don't know, i'm probably worrying about nothing.
