(Are you truly a cat person?) "I don't hate cats," he amended, nudging her playfully. "I just prefer dogs. I would buy a dog before I bought a cat."
(I'm a huge cat person haha, but I do like dogs as well.) "It's too late now. I can't be seen with a dog person." She feigned disappointment, placing a hand on her forehead. "J'ai désolé, il faut que ce soit ainsi."
"Jamais!" She seemed slightly surprised, then thought for a moment. "Hmm.. What will you offer me, so that we may sort this debate and end it?"
She crossed her arms in thought. "I suppose... But would you accept a cat?" Her head tilted in questioning.
"All dogs are good," Jack said, sitting down on the floor. Talking seemed to help distract him from the next day's endeavors, and he relaxed, his back leaning against the wall of the ship.
Avice sat down directly in front of him, crossing her legs. "I don't believe that. There's gotta be a few bad ones." She tugged at a strand of hair.
"Uh uh," he said. "Even guard dogs are good hearted. They do their job very well." He yawned, stretching his arms up into the air. His limbs were long and their movements were smooth. His exposed forearms were lightly tanned from working in the sun, and freckles dotted them, creating a path up his shoulder.
She watched thoughtfully, observing. After a bit she grinned and put a hand under her chin. "I don't understand how I got so lucky."
He cocked his head, much like a dog being given foreign commands, and grinned cheekily. "You're deep into the middle of the ocean with an uncertain future," he said. "Lucky is kinda a weird word for it."
"Yeah, but still. I'm on the ocean. I'm not dead. You're here. Do you see? Everything is pretty okay." She shrugged. "And just because the future is uncertain doesn't mean it's not good, does it?"
He rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly. He opened his mouth to say something, and then exhaled, smiling and shaking his head. "You're right," he said. "Everything is pretty okay. The future is good."
"Do you mean after we get back to surface, or after you and I are finished talking?" Jack asked, going from a sitting position to a laying down position and turning his head to look at her.
"After we get back to the surface. I mean, the other one works, too but y'know..." She gave a small yawn.
"Hmm," he said, musing as he stared up to the crow's nest. "I don't know. I can't really imagine leaving the ship. I don't think I'd want to do anything else. I might go back to school. You?"
"Travel, maybe. Paint. Grow a garden if I feel like it. I'm uncertain, to be honest. I also feel reluctant to leave, but if I had to, those would be my choices."
