Another day in the Canterlot Library. A lazy one, at that. Besides the weekly visitors, including the Princess of Friendship herself, some young colts looking for a good adventure book, and a few students from Iota, the library was empty. A droopy eyed unicorn sat at her desk, occasionally nodding off due to a night long marathon of books on theoretical magic principals and methods. "Ms. Star?" A young voice asked, piercing the silence. The mare shot up in her desk, suddenly becoming alert. "Huh? Oh, yes. Returning a book?" The young colt nodded and approached the counter. Star opened the hatch and the Colt dropped the book in. "Ms. Star, did you hear that the next Daring Do book is coming out soon?" "Why of course, we have some copies in reserve, if you'd like to place one aside in your name." The colt's eyes lit up in excitement. "Really?! You'd let me do that? "Of course." After a brief exchange of paper work, the colt ran out. He was a nice kid, Star thought. She often wondered what her childhood would've been like without the changeling incident. What sort of adventure would've happened should she have evaded the Changelings that night. After being through all that, and being thrust into the adult world, she wished she could have a break from the routine chit-chat with the library patrons and page flipping.
a faint smell of smoke reached the room she was in. outside, A young stallion leaned against a wall and watched the wall as it was slowly covered in flames.
The rancid odor of burning wood soon tainted Star's nose, and after a brief moment of realization, she trotted to a switch on the wall, and pulled the fire alarm. Just before making her way to the door, it burst into flame. She shrieked in surprise, and then made way for the window. She looked out to see how long a jump would be. While she was observing, she noticed a stallion who's horn was radiating with a magical aura, watching the fire. Without hesitation, she leaped out the window, and despite the risk of breaking her legs, she was able to slow down he landing just enough to minimize injuries. The adrenaline suppressed the pain though. She trotted to the stallion. "Just what in Tartarus' name do you think you're doing? That is government property that contains hundreds of years of history!"
"For as long as Equestria has been a nation, this building was here. It has sentimental value! Why are you even doing this?"
"I was bored. flames are nice...." he said, gazing at the flames, mesmerized. he shook his head. "besides, there's not much else for me to do. this is what I'm good at."
he blushed. "I don't have an extinguishing spell! all my magic has to have fire, or at least intense heat" he snapped.
Star's eyes went wide. She began to trot in circles. "Okay Star, don't panic, it's just a few flames... Okay, a lot of flames... but nothing the fire brigade can't handle right?" She looked to the sky, and the rain cloud carrying pegasi were nowhere to be found. "Okay, panicking." She reached for her amulet, and thrust it into Solon's hooves. "As soon as I finish my spell and those flames go out, I want you to put this amulet back on my neck, okay?"
"okay..." he said apprehensively. he looked at the fire. "on the bright side, this is far from the worst flame I've ever conjured"
Star took a deep breath, and her horn began to glow a cyan hue. Tracing a circle of light in the air with her hoof, she began the incantation. "Flames dance and flicker at their own prerogative! I call upon the power of wind and water to satiate their hunger!" A sudden gust of wind pushed the flames back, while a torrential downpour extinguished several tendrils of flame. When the final fire was extinguished, small wisps of purple-black magic seeped out of Star's eyes. "Amulet, now!"
"yep. it seems to just be the way my magic works" he said, shrugging, then grinned evilly. "the plus side is that my magic, while limited, is more powerful than any unicorn's I've ever seen"
