It all depends on the type of music you're making.

Heh, I just use my iPad. It has a terrible speaker, but it's the only thing I can use.

Well, could use. Used my iPad. Past tense.

If you're new, start with Garageband. Then, make a few songs with loops, then get used to MIDI (look that up [and note quantizing, for that matter])
Show me the loops songs you make

It depends whether you use a Mac or run Windows/Linux and whether you're willing to pay. I heard that garageband is good if you have a Mac. FL studios is a popular one (used by most brony musicians) but you'd have to pay for that. I'm not too certain about the best free one though.

As for recording, Audacity works well. I'm not too sure about what microphone to use though. I'd take the advice of some more experienced musicians though. I literally just play around with some stuff, I don't actually make anything.

For typing up sheet music, I use MuseScore, since it's free. I also use it to make chiptunes sometimes. (Not very often.)
