The guards and the medics came running down and for a second, they just watched in confusion. One of the medics realized it first. "Open the cell!" she barked. "This one is Magyck binding!" The guards didn't seem to understand and just looked at each other.
Cal turned to the guards sharply, her eyes fierce. "Open the damn cage now! Faeries can't live without magyck! He's dying!"
They started in surprise and one of them opened the cage, swinging open the door. As soon as the seal was broken, Ben began gasping for much-needed breath, curling into a fetal position as he struggled to get air in his lungs.
Her shoulders relaxed a little, but she kept her distance for the medics as well as to follow orders.
The medics swarmed him, and she would hear him respond in confusion, his voice low and raspy. "What... what are you doing? Back up, please... please..."
She reached down, carefully touching his cheek before pulling back. "Yeah. It's me. Just be patient."
His words were slurred and he tried to sit up, looking like he was having trouble seeing her. "How did you... get here? Am I... Am I dying? Is that why it stopped hurting?"
The guard put a hand on his chest and forced him back down onto the bed, a little harsher than she might've like, and Ben groaned as he fell back. "Cal..."
He squeezed her hand weakly, but rested her head back, looking up at the ceiling. "Did they get you too...?" he asked tiredly. "Why is it... why is it so bright...?"
He laughed a little, and although she couldn't really see his face, she would have been able to hear the smirk in his voice. "Would you be relaxing if you were me?"
