I don't get this. Maybe for two reasons: One, comedy doesn't trivialise subjects, it reduces the fear you have towards it. It can take a taboo subject and make you face it with just the right light. These are harsh and cruel acts to tie to a blog like this but it seems to be doing things correctly to have it's sexually promiscuous star be funny without being disgusting, as far as I can see. I mean, no one thinks 'Fawlty Towers' ought to be banned because Basil Fawlty was racist sometimes. You're invited to laugh at this cruel man but grow attached to him because he makes you laugh. Molestia appears to employ a similar character dynamic, only with promiscuity rather than irritation with his spanish waiter. After all, Manuel was effectively bullied because of a language barrier, you rarely found the show making you cheer for Basil. Two, Charlie Chaplin once said that "Life is a tragedy when seen in close-up, but a comedy in long-shot". Comedy creates distance from what your viewing because you need that detachment to be able to laugh. I find it a rather worrying prospect that someone, somewhere is willing to try and protect me from something that I'm already distanced from. I can understand that what is being shown to me is not meant to be considered the actual views I'm meant to take away from the experience because I'm not a dishrag. I don't watch Reginald D Hunter and think that Josef Fritzl was anything else than a monster. He's not glorifying evil, he's putting it in a stupid hat to make it easier to cope with. Because if feel like trying to get it banned suggests that there are people out there who believe that I might burst into giggles if I met a rape victim. And I wouldn't. Why? Because I'm no longer distant from it. I'm no longer in a long shot, I am in a close up and I can see the tragedy myself. Anyone that could still laugh in that position has greater issues than whether the exploits of a randy alicorn and her gamer sister are poisoning their mind. Comedy is joy from darkness. To say otherwise is to kill it.
The idiocy of the people pushing the DWM crap around makes me want to bash my skull in so i don't have to hear them.,
I'm not sure if my opinion has any base so here: I laugh a rape faces because they're funny. I know someone who was sexually assaulted as a child, but I don't pester her about it. The reason that I like to joke about stuff is to take away the darkness out of a subject. Like for instance, every time I play Zombies in COD: Blackops, I always say that my friend and I are doing PETA's job of killing the dogs. That's my way of making PETA looking like a fool. Now about rape, there's the Bed Intruder Song and rape faces. I know rape is bad, but the jokes aren't doing anything other than to make people laugh. If people get offended, then they really need to grow a thick skin. Then again, it applies to me, since I hate sexist jokes... >.>
This is how I feel about this. Comedy is one of the best weapons we have against cruelty and hideousness. Laughing at it lessens it's grip of fear on people.
