Hey everypony, as I'm sure you've all noticed I'm back, I am on holiday as of today for one week! This term put me through a lot, one of the things was deciding about which subjects I am going to take next year, A tough decision. but I came to decide on Pure maths, Life orientation, Afrikaans, English, Life science, Physical Science and IT While making his decision, I had a long talk with my mom...About affirmative action that is occurring in South Africa. Basically, for those who don't know, South Africa went through a period of apartheid, and during that period, the National Party lead by D.F Malan one of the biggest ***holes in the history of our country, went and passed laws that discriminated against all non white races and basically protected Whites and gave them extra benefits. Now that's over and basically what is happening now is Affirmative action, the Government is trying to 'undo' the mistakes of the past, by doing them again, only in reverse. Now, black, Indian, Malay, coloured and Asian people are getting benefits and 'empowerment' and the government is making it harder for white people to get careers and further education at universities. A Grade 12 guy at my school was doing science and maths and was studying to be a doctor. He had a 90% average. and was turned down by five universities, saying his marks were not high enough. After doing a little research he found out that the government has told universities to accept mainly only non whites. These were the minimum requirements that they were given to base their choices off. White: Need 90% average minimum Indian: Need 80% average to be accepted Black: Need 70% Average minimum to be accepted My parents can quite clearly see what is going on here and where this country is headed and are starting to seriously talk of moving to Australia or New Zealand. The point of this thread basically is to ask your opinion on the matter. For me, I can understand why the government is wanting to fix the mistakes of the past, I can understand also, why they may hold Apartheid against Whites. But for me, is it fair to take it all out on the youth of this generation, when it was previous generations that caused all of it? What the government is really doing. And don't take this the wrong way, is allowing less skilled people into jobs that require more skill. I'm in NO WAY saying that non white people are less skilled and are inferior to white people, what I am saying is that by allowing lower minimum percentages for other races into universities, you are going to get more people applying from that race, and because the standard has been lowered, the skill of the people applying will also be lowered, it would be like that for anything, is the minimum bar for whites was 60%, you would get a large group of white people with marks of 60% or higher applying at universities, majority of them having lower percentages than higher an in turn having less skilled doctors and nurses etc. What is your opinion on this? I was careful when wording my sentences, because I in no way want to come off as being racist, because I believe that we should all be treated equally and have equal rights. No person is better than another because of his/her race. I just want to know what you guys think of this. I personally can understand why this is happening, because of all the mistakes in the past, but I don't think it is fair to take it out on this generation, as it is not their fault.
Ah, I had heard of this happening. Some people out there call anyone born between 1980 and 2000 the "screwed generation." Frankly, I see this happening right before my eyes. All this crap is being thrown out that affects the Screwed Generation and it's only causing more problems than it's helping (then again, isn't that what governments are for?). These laws are causing all kinds of screwups with money and such. Not to mention, we can't forget the baby boomer generation that's starting to become seniors. Do you know what kind of money that's going to pull from the screwed generation? T'is sad day to be under 30...
Yeah, I hate it when governments set different standards for different races. Luckily, that's illegal in the US. Not that there aren't certain kinds of affirmative action here; it's just that you can't pick one person over the other simply based on race. The way it usually works is something like they take race into consideration if the two candidates have otherwise identical stats or something. I still am not crazy for the idea, but there needs to be a tiebreaker somehow. The good thing is, it's not always about minorities. If the balance is shifted toward minorities, this system will then favor whites until the balance shifts once more. In fact, I think it was a couple years ago when it was white women who got the most from affirmative action.
I still don't see why they have different requirements for different races. That defeats the whole point of trying to make things equal. And if they want to try and tip the scales to make it equal, punish the adults, not the youth. Whoever is in charge of all of this clearly isn't thinking straight.
Sounds very left to me. "Let's make everyone more equal by making them all have seperate requirements to accomplish educational standards!" That's a major derp on the educational sytems/governments part. You don't study Government and Politics for two years to learn about how 'wonderful' British, American and international Politicians, policies and governmental sytems/structure are, I can tell you that much. This is everything me and my Boyfriend hate. It should be about EQUAL oppertunity depending on the individual! It should have nothing to do with race. In fact, in my ideal world, you shouldn't even have to write down your race on issued paperwork, employment forms and especially not universities/colleges. It should be unimportant, we should disregard it entirely so we prevent mess ups like this.
well, I can't tell much about those kind of thing because, as far as I know in whole Europe (and for Croatia, i'm 100% sure) that any kind of discrimination, and benitifing, or demageing someone on base of race, sexuality, gender, age, etc is illegal. So, in colleges and govermant things, you are mearly number for them, so they don't see your race, sexuality, looks at all. They see only things that are actually important for certan job/university/etc. Also, in no document does it say what race you are, because simply, it's not important. Advide, well, I don't know what to advice. I can only say that I was in Australia, and I saw their population is very diverse, and no one (at least on the street, in restaurnats, etc) looks what race you are (Specially Melbourne). Only warning for Australia is that big cities (Melbourne, Sydney) are kinda expencive to live in.
I think it's a simple case of two wrongs don't make a right, it's stupid and it doesn't promote any kind of meaningful progress. I happen to know a few people from South Africa, one of which I still see, and they've all had the same story. I vote move to Australia, then you can come see me
Time for some good old fashioned rebellion! Get out of there. Crappy Governments.....everywhere....I've never heard anything bad about Australia. Other than the pointless game censorship....
I'm not inclined to believe you. There is rarely a place that isn't touch by the Rothschild influence apart from the middle east. Which is why countries are at war with them.
In all honesty, this is exactly what happen a century ago. Richer got richer, poorer got poorer, governments became corrupt, passing meaningless laws, etc, etc, etc. As the old saying goes, History repeats itself.
There are of course a couple downsides If I do move, it'll mean my schooling will be a little disrupted, but it ain't too bad I guess, If it means I'll be getting a job
Damn 'Murican media. I heard nothing about this, not so much of a good situation you're in right now, I hope it gets better there shouldn't be that kind of discrimination against any race.
So this is well a good start but the wrong idea. They have to fix this problem different. Better starting education for everyone black or white would be better than letting less skilled people into universitys. So why not skill them better in the first place? But Well i Think australia is quite a good place to go.
