(Oh, right, right: ) The students back by the initial conflict began to panic and rush back into their classrooms. Bobby's call to the authorities couldn't go through. All attempts ended up with a loud crackling/white-noise coming from the speaker although there was perfect signal. After a few attempts the phone began to shut off for no valid reason.
Of course, evil aliens blocking cell phone reception.... Well aliens or not who ever was responsible for the current goings on were no the good guys. Now what should he do. He couldn't attract attention to himself.
Lark approached the cellar where Kara hid, and sighed in frustration, Hovering ever so slightly, she put her hands to her temples, and massaged her head slightly. "Not only do I need to find Kara, but we can't leave the others either," she thought.
A couple of 'agents' began combing the classrooms with some scanners beeping rhythmically. They both kept talking about "One more around here somewhere" and were getting closer to Bobby's classroom.
Bobby shivered and it wasn't even cold in the class room. That was never a good thing. He needed to think and think fast. He remembered in a Fantastic four comic part of Reed Richchards intelligence was him stretching synaptic pathways in his brain. Could he do something similar with his shape-shifting. Would it work? What would happen if it worked it was like he knew much science stuff in the first place. Maybe the science fiction he was familiar with would help him understand real science? Better to try and fail than not to have tried at all.
The 'agents' got closer and the beeping from the scanners went faster. A sudden zap and crackle came from outside in the hallway and an agent dragging an unconscious Jared went past Bobby's classroom. A couple of students gasped and a few more murmured in curiosity. Footsteps could also be heard from outside the cellar but seemed to be more mechanical than human.
Lark jumped, and looked down and saw Kara. She quickly slid into the dark, and closed the door. "Hear that?" she whispered.
The mechanical footsteps started to become louder and louder. The door creaked open and slow, eerie footsteps banged down the stairs. A light flashed over the area and the footsteps became louder. The light surveyed the area then turned around and left the room.
"We need to find the others," Lark whispered as she slipped her thin frame out of the cellar. "We can't leave them."
Kara nodded, then looked around. "but how?" she whispered. "they're probably back at the school, and these things are everywhere."
"Well, how many of us were there?" Lark asked, thinking back. She absentmindedly hovered as she counted on her fingers. "There was that one girl, Viktoria, I think. Then there was that boy. Plus you and I."
Lark laughed slightly, but it was almost a groan. "Yeah. Maybe." She thought for a moment, her bright eyes darting across the horizon. "There was also that.. weapon," she said, almost shuddering in fear. "We have to be careful of that." The thunder rumbled up ahead, and Lark glanced up momentarily, and then back down at Kara. "This storm is about to burst; we need to hurry. How about this? If I.." she paused, looking down at her levitating feet. "fly, I suppose, past the windows, I can find out where they are. Then, once I find them, I can attract the weapon and those agents' attention, and you can get the others. Will that work?" She swallowed her fear and looked straight into Kara's eyes.
Kara blinked, looking at her, then nodded. "be careful" she said. she hoped Lark didn't do anything too extreme
"I will, don't worry. I'll be back soon. Stay safe," she said, nodding. She floated upwards, almost gently at first, but quickly jolted up as she almost lost control. At the top of the building, she slowed to an unsteady stop, looked down at Kara, and gave her a thumbs up. She reached a hand out, and tugged on the currents, and quickly swept forward, floating just below the windows, so she could peek inside. She seemed to be getting better, but it wasn't in any way smooth, and she hoped she wouldn't run into the course, brick wall of the school.
