He looked around, gazing at the tops of buildings. "Do you have anywhere else to stay? Besides your parents? Do they live in the city?"
"No, they... they leave out in the country," she said slowly. "I don't... I guess I could find a hotel room, maybe."
He frowned, shaking his head slowly. "That.. Mm. That's risky." He pinched the bridge of his nose. "You had to be looking into windows."
"I didn't mean to," she replied defensively. "It was an open window and that guy was just... sitting there. I thought he might be having a stroke. I was about to leave."
He looked thoughtful before looking back at her with a frown. "I have place where you can stay. It'll be safer than anywhere else. I'll explain everything there."
He looked a little surprised, and maybe a bit disappointed. "You realize I'm trying to make sure the other people don't kill you, right?"
"I know very little," she replied, raising one eyebrow. "I think that's the persona you're trying to portray. You know... this dark, brooding dude who is on the edge of society or whatever. But you might be a really good actor."
She huffed, following him. "I mean, I'm going to come with you, but you do realize that you'd say the same thing if you were acting, yeah?"
"Well, that's the unfortunate position I've found myself in," she replied, looking over her shoulder. "One person is definitely shooting at me, and one person isn't. I'll go with you as long as you don't shoot me."
He murmured something in agreement, and they made their way. After a bit of walking, they were in the darker areas of the city. He went down a few steps isolated from the alley they headed into, opening a garage-like door at the bottom. It revealed a large living space made of cement, it wasn't homey, but it was clean. There was a livingroom and kitchen, and four separate rooms. All three were closed and one was padlocked. He gestured to the third room down. "That's a spare."
She looked confused, looking up at him. "Why are you helping me?" she asked, tilting her head. "You could have let me die out there."
"I could've," he said, his voice gruff. "It'd be a hell of a lot easier. But I have some respect for people."
She laughed lightly, crossing her arms and looking in the third room. "Will you explain to me what's going on?"
