About 40 minutes ago, Russia was hit with a meteor, that's right, a meteor, not one of those tiddly little space rocks, I mean something bigger than a lorry. While we don't yet have the technologies to block such a disaster, why on earth wasn't there more of a warning? An evacuation of the area? Most of the world's leading space scientists saw this coming yesterday, but what was done about it? Many people were injured, huge shockwave damage, signals crashed and burnt, about 900 injuries in total. My sympathies go to all those who were affected. The odds of this happening again in our lifetimes is very unlikely, another meteor is said to pass by at 14:20pm EST.
I do not know why there was no warning only guesses: Did not know the exact location of impact until it was too late to evacuate, overlooked, or did not care if it hit Russia. There's also going to be 2 comets this year (March and December), maybe they won't hit us too.
My condolences to those who were affected by it. Though, I never expected another (big) meteor would hit Earth...at least not without scientists predicting it, or even noticing it.
Pretty scary stuff. The good news is that it mostly burned away and broke up into smaller pieces before impact. Could have had a different conclusion if not. Yayatmosphere
Yep, may not seem like it, but earth has a few decent tricks up it's sleeve to help minimise disasters. Still, quite scary, My sympathies to those who were affected
That's awful for the people who were injured and had their windows shattered. Still, surviving a meteor attack isn't something most people can say, but if we had a better way of detecting these things maybe there would've been some time to evacuate.
Oh yeah, btw there is supposed to be an asteroid passing so close to Earth that it will pass between Earth and our own man made satellites. I think this is supposed to happen sometime soon, too. Nevermind, if it was supposed to happen at 14:20pm EST then it already happened.
So I took a look at a map. The location of this landing was actually not too far from a nuclear plant. That could have gone MUCH worse. Be glad that place is still intact.
The way I heard it, the meteor came from nearly nowhere. No one died, fortunately and it came in at a steep angle, but the shrapnel of the glass accounted for nearly all of the injuries. I've seen footage near the tin factory where a small chunk of it landed. It looked like The Hulk punched every window frame in. Honestly, it looks more frightening than it is and it sounded more frightening then it was. It exploded and broke into four or more chunks. From 56 feet at it's widest point to the size of a tyre.
Couldn't imagine if I was there. The Fear that I'm gonna die. Sad day in Russia. Prayers go out for Russia.
I watched it this morning on the news. I can't believe the amount of damage it did just from passing things by.
