I've seen so much spam in the blogs lately (there's three now, actually). Shouldn't this site be blocking spambots automatically? We've never had any problems with this before.

In all seriousness though, i think some of the forum mods should keep an extra eye on the blogs until this is over. And perhaps look into spamfilter updates or something?

I'm sure the automatic system can't catch everything. Just report the spam so mods can deal with it manually.

I know that, but the past few days there have been more spammers than ever before. In fact, i've never seen a single spammer until a few days ago. I just think it's weird.

They're probably just new. The database that EP queries (http://stopforumspam.com) has probably not added them to their database yet.

What staff might want to check is if these spammers all come from the same IP and block it that way.

They were put through the spam-o-matic so they have been added to the IP blacklist.

From what I remember spam-o-matic doesn't work that way. Admins can only add to the IP blocklist manually through their control panel, not associated with the spam-o-matic plugin.

Ok so these are still coming through. I think you guys need to bump the filter strength more. IIRC the default settings for it are to check IPs and emails only. Someone should set it to check for matching usernames as well. Username checks could potentially increase the chance of blocking legit users, but it might be necessary for now. You will see here that there are records dating months back of this spam username. The IPs and emails used by these bots must be changing thus missing the checks.

If it blocks usernames in the sense that it prevents them from registering an account with a certain username, legit users will just pick different name where bots will be blocked, so it wouldn't be much of an issue.

As far as I can tell, none of the Spam systems we currently have operate like this. We can block certain words from Usernames but this could seriously cut off the number of possible user names for new users.

Actually there is because I set it up. The spam-o-matic settings mate. vB doesn't handle spam in any sort of automatic fashion, so this plugin has been doing that for you. ...If you guys just took a little time to look at what you have available to use and what you don't, you'll save quite a bit of headache. For everyone. I'm not trying to pin you tyro but it's becoming apparent that there's some efficiency problems here. Get some extra trusting hands to help if that's what it takes.

Easy matie! I've found what I think you're talking about. I was clearly expecting it to be something else and missed it.
