He looked down at her, raising an eyebrow. “I am capable of managing until she returns, Sona. Sleep.”
(Zoop!) The next morning, Eliza was kneeling at the fire, cooking the third of five skinned rodent of some type over the flames. She also had a few eggs cooking in the hot embers. Jude was asleep on his mat, his head resting on his arm.
Vaughn was the first to wake, opening his eyes groggily. He groaned, rubbing his head. "What the hell..?"
Eliza barely glanced up, her eyes flickering over to him as she shifted the ashes around the eggs. "Oh. Good morning, Enforcer."
"The girl you threatened to kill knocked you out as you were attempting to justify your actions," she said smoothly, taking the meat off of the flames and setting it aside, looking up at him primly. "I assume that's what you are referring to?"
She raised an eyebrow curiously. “Don’t be too upset. You did deserve it. At least we didn’t just leave you here to die. It would have been easy and probably smarter.”
She considered him with a frown, her brow raised before she reached into the flames with her stick, pulling out the eggs. "Taking human lives is an everyday thing for you, Enforcer. It's easy. You killed children for speaking and being curious. You killed us for spilling blood on the fabric. You killed our mothers for protecting us." She said this slowly, her eyes trained on the flames. "However, the three of us understand something. We recognize that the more deaths that the three of us are responsible for, the closer we get to becoming you." She put the meat and an egg on four large leaves, dividing up the food before offering him one. "There is very little that we won't do to stop that from happening. We will never be the same as you, Enforcer."
She didn't say anything else to him, standing up and going over to Sona and Jude with their food, setting it down beside them and shaking their shoulders gently.
Jude also woke up, blinking blearily. Eliza offered them their food, setting it down beside them before standing up and returning to her place by the fire. "We need to move out quickly," she said quietly. "We'll leave when we finish eating."
Jude was hunched over before he spoke. “Eliza, what’s the plan?” She looked up at him thoughtfully, her brow raised. “What do you mean?” “I mean, do you intend for this to be a full-blown rebellion, or are we just trying to get to the top? What do you want from all this?” She paused, looking at the fire for a moment. “It was dependent on how many people escaped,” she said quietly. “If we had enough, I thought we could really.... really make a difference.”
Vaughn crossed his arms. "You never know how it will be received once we reach the destination. There may still be a chance."
