What are your thoughts on Alicorn OCs, are there too many royal ones or are there too many Over Powered ones? I like to know.
Some can be quite good if done correctly. Others are absolute atrocities that shouldn't exist. As long as they can be done without being Mary Sues and not OP, they can be done well. But that's just my opinion.
The show as I see it precedented on the uniqueness of alicorns. The whole concept of Twilight becoming a princess becomes a lot less special in the face of multiple extra alicorn OCs, and a lot of the awe that fans had for Celestia and Luna early on in the series would have disappeared if there were tons more alicorns. Bottom line, the concept of an alicorn OC is inherently unsustainable. There are in-show, canon communities where all the characters in a town are Griffins, Pegasi, Earth Ponies, Unicorns or other unremarkable (read: not godlike in the sense of having mastered multiple avenues of living such as flight and magic together) races, but no all-Alicorn communities, suggesting that they are rare. As of yet we still do not understand how Alicorns are made beyond the ascendancy of Twilight to princesshood. It could be that some Alicorns are born while others are made, but it seems more likely based on what we know that all Alicorns would be made from regular ponies like Twilight. Given that, all Alicorns would have to be chosen for a certain station (Luna as the Princess of the Night, Twilight as the Princess of Magic/Friendship, etc.) as creating an Alicorn OC would almost necessitate creating a whole new kingdom (such as the Crystal Empire) over which they might preside. Additionally, it seems intuitive that there could also only be a handful of Alicorns because there would also only be a handful of places/concepts that require a near-deity to preside over them. For all these reasons, it would seem counter to what we know as canon to make an Alicorn OC. Other reasons why they're generally bad could include being overpowered or cliche. Lots of people who rant against Alicorn OCs usually cover those points, so I won't do that here, but in terms of roleplaying, at least, the Alicorn OC is kind of the ultimate middle finger to all the other roleplayers. That's just how I see it.
I think that they're something that's best avoided. For the most part, they seem to be either characters that are designed to be powerful and special (She's the Princess of Time and she's really strong and Discord is in love with her!), or designed to have some sort of tragic flaw (She's got a broken horn and she can't fly well but she just wants to be normal!). Either way, Alicorns in the show are something rare and special. OCs should fit into the world they're created for, not stand out more than the main characters.
