So, at my school, people got together to do this whole cancer awareness thing, and the main theme was kind of 'hope-y'. Some of you know that my grandmother recently got cancer, and I was thinking the whole time; is hope really all it's cracked up to be? I mean, it's lovely to have, believe me, especially in the beginning, but as thing only start to get worse, doesn't hope just hurt? Your hopes get repeatedly smashed by reality, and I think it's better just to be frank, and have it exceed your expectations. That way the small victories are so much sweeter. What do you think?

I try not to hope for anything really. Sounds kinda depressing at first but I agree with what you say that personally I feel it's better to not beat around the bush and just live for today.

The world is a lot brighter and more enjoyable with a positive outlook. The problem is maintaining it.

I shall live and die with the motto 'Expect the worst, hope for the best.'

That way I don't get disappointed when things don't go my way.

That's rough :sigh: I really have no right to be telling you how to feel, but if I were to give any advice (which you can ignore if you want because, again, I have no right to tell you how to feel about this) I would say it is better to appreciate the little victories than get your hopes up.

These snobbish folk talk about hope.

Here is my take on hope.

Sometimes, hope helps one to do the impossible, like making a revolution. Sometimes, hope brings the motivation to even start action. Sometimes, hope is what drives us to follow through.
Granted, the Hunger Games is fiction, but there's one thing about the kind of hope in it: the hope was not passive. The hope in it was active, driving Katniss to commit daring acts of defiance, inspiring others into support of rebellion, and creating a revolution.
So, similar to what Henry said, there is the difference between hopes and expectations: expectations are passive; hopes should inspire.
After all, you can't expect life to be handed to you on a silver platter, so have the hope that you can change life even slightly towards your favor.

Have the hope to make your own mini-revolution in everyday life.

For something like cancer, don't expect that you can sit there and have loved ones with cancer survive. Hope that you can do something about it. Give support for your loved one, like visiting them, or donate and give support to help others live, all in the hope that you can make a difference.

"Hoping" isn't what hurts you. Getting too attached to one ideal set of imaginary circumstances does.

If the thing you hoped for doesn't happen, you're going to be sad. The best way to deal with that feeling of sadness is to continue hoping. Even people who tell you they don't hope do it anyway. It keeps us sane and happy. Hope is wanting. You can't have happiness without experiencing sadness at some point. Hope that you can move on. If the worst happens, and sometimes it does, hope that you can find peace and reconcile life's crazy turn of events. You can't control the world around you. The most all of our human endeavors will ever amount to is a small invested hope.

Here's hoping.

I'm not sure what to say after Fulcrum's heartwarming story... To me hope is great for a short while but in my experiences, it can quickly lead to depression and drive a person to give up when things take a turn for the worst. Maybe I just didn't have the willpower after years of declining health. For others though, who have been more optimitic and live to seize the day, Hope can prove to be a great help when something unexpected happens and so long as you take pro-active steps like doing small things to make the situation better, You'll feel better about yourself later.

I understand that hope can be hard sometimes but it is also a good thing. This is a very hard question to ask and I think it mostly depends on the situation. I think that hope can make people very happy and sometimes make them happier even if they are faking it for others. Although, hope can run out and it can keep people in denial which can be bad as well. I have always believed that you should be happy and have a great outlook, but with people that are in severe pain I think it is best for them to let go instead of holding onto pain when they will not get better.
