Not really strange. It sounds like he's insecure about himself being a brony, so to make up for it he laughs it off in public so that others around him wont find him weird. Which is all the more reason Josh should tell him he's a brony too. That way, maybe he'll feel more comfortable knowing that he can share his feelings about MLP with someone.
Cupcakes, in itself, is not meant to be taken seriously. I feel compelled to write the background of it in a sticky or something, but it's not something I want to directly attract attention to on EP. Just tell him it's not meant to be taken seriously and that it's infamous for its violence. Just about everyone has read it. It's a shocking story, but that's all it is: a story.
