Hypothetical situation: Disney buys Hasbro and gains the rights to MLP. How would the show have changed, if at all?

I don't seen MLP chaging much if at all. Thankfully Disney isn't doing to well so they won't be buying Hasbro anytime soon and we don't have to worry about them ruining Hasbro's other properties.

But Disney would give MLP a higher animation budget.

Yeah. At the cost of tanking quality. Very little that assimilates with Disney ends up being good. So better animation doesn't mean *squee!*.

They have a loose agreement with merchandise sales though. I do remember seeing MLP toys for sale in the Disney theme parks the past few years.

Really depends on who they get to handle it. MLP tends to fit in what Disney usually deems fine for their brand - which is very positive and happy most of the time with normally very few elements that would be particularly challenging (though they're attempting to break that mold at a little (The bizarre elements of Gravity Falls, some nuanced and subversive elements of Marvel and Star Wars movies) - but the Mouse House has a lot of people under it. If it was brought up, you'd hope they just keep the usual writers but it's also likely they'd bring in their own stuff to help.

That said, Disney has a decent record with animated stuff, being one of the longest running companies in the business. I wouldn't be the happiest with another thing going to the biggest all-encompassing company in the world right now but it would at least gain some pedigree. I couldn't say the same for Hasbro at least.
