Meanwhile in the staff room:

    -------------

Let's get one thing straight. Those images in blog comments aren't that big of a deal. But when i post a thread in Site Discussion, asking something to be done, or simply asking a question, i at least expect a reply. The only reply i got was from Mike, who isn't technically on staff (though he kind of still is), and so he can't give me an opinion on what the staff is going to do.

More than 24 hours passed since i posted a thread asking about images in blog comments. Anyone on staff would be capable of a simple "We'll look into it." to begin with. I'm not even asking for a direct answer or solution. I'm asking for acknowledgement of a thread that i'd have long since replied to if i was still on staff. I was hoping you guys would get inspired to pick up the pace. I asked you guys to do that before shortly after i left, but it seems that request went right over your heads. I remember days when threads like this were discussed, solved, and stamped with a [Resolved] tag within 24 hours.

It takes less than a minute to click a button that allows users to post images in blog comments. (Or equally disallow staff members to do so)

Most of this thread is a complaint, hence why i posted it here, but here's a suggestion:

I'd like the staff to implement a 24 hour response policy.

I would like the staff to promise the site's users to respond to their threads and/or questions within 24 hours of a thread being posted on the forums. (Obviously for staff or site-related threads only).

You remember that time Miggy posted a complaint thread about you within 10 minutes or so of you deleting his comment, giving you little to no time to respond to it? Just don't want you acting the same way.

Given, 24 hours is a good amount of time to expect a response, but if it's made into a policy of the site that can't be maintained then that's just more stress on everyone. Those running the site volunteer for the work and something like this is something that's usually done by people paid to do it. This doesn't excuse them ignoring it, but it does mean that whatever work they do is their own choice at their own pace. It's up to them to decide how important it is to them.

I always hated how forum moderators would do that, they'd just swoop in and give their opinion without consulting anyone, like 3 to 5 of them at once, site discussion is the help desk, not the I'm on staff and I'm going to give you my take on it because I'm on staff so there. No, stop that, it's unprofessional as hell, wait for a final decision, it's confusing as hell when everyone jumps in and everyone all on staff say something completely different from each other, when you are all supposed to be in unison.

I'd like the staff to implement a standard of work ethics, oh wait...

Also while I'm at it, I still see no point to the complaint box and never wanted it, this sub-forum that serves the exact same purpose as Site Discussion, wasn't there a discussion about making the place less cluttered? I know what I want to get the axe.

I think a happy medium can be found here. Instead of them rushing and giving a decision that quickly, just a "We've read this thread and it is under consideration" acknowledgement is perfectly reasonable. No judgement or decision. Just a note saying it has been seen. It lets the users know they have been heard, but the staff does not have to rush to any decisions either. Acceptable compromise? I think so.

I'm not saying any random staff member should come in and solve all of my problems. I agree that in most cases they can't and shouldn't work on their own. I'm simply saying the least they could do is give a heads up that they noticed the thread and start working on the issue.

Normally something like a 24 hour policy wouldn't even be needed on most websites. On most websites you'd get a response within 24 hours regardless of any policies or promises. But considering that the staff on this site needs the occasional push to move forward, i don't think it'd be such a bad idea.

It's true that everyone on staff volunteered for the job they were given, but if they can't or won't do that job effectively, why keep them around? I know that's a pretty harsh way of saying it, but i don't know any other way to say it.

It's in the appropriate thread, think of it like a ticket, and wait to be served, when the council is ready to announce a decision or update, they will. Until then, stop being a negative nancy and actively spreading negativity about the site, be supportive in giving criticism. And no, giving a suggestion amongst a post that vilifies the activities of the staff does not constitute as helping, not by a long shot.

If they don't do it, who will? Not counting those who've already come and gone, do you think there are better choices than those on the staff right now? This isn't an insult or veiled hint that the staff need changing, but you and I both know that for most people on this forum if they had 6 months of what we went through then they'd be very different about their opinion on the staff.

I can think of 4 people who are adequate for a staff role here, all of which were ignored, even as, when we were hiring, I told Eight the result of my scouting and found 2 candidates who said they wanted to be a forum mod on staff.

None of them made it. And now Fluttery is a forum mod. Hmm.

Regardless, I think we can all take Dragon's suggestion rather than rant about this all day. I think everyone knows that most staff don't even check site discussion all that much unless it's something that calls them out. Props to those who do though.

I think the 24 response thing's a good idea, but it must be stressful when you're a chat/radio/forum mod.

Dragon has the right idea, so all I have to say is that I support it.

Also 2 other things that I like about this thread.

1)The same people seem to flock to it

2)The majority posting here are previous staff, which most likely ties into the first

There's no need to call Fluttery out just because he's not your personal pick.

Can we call him out because he is never around, or maybe he is and I just never see him. My last sighting was like 3 weeks back with one of those community post things. I still like to complain about the staff as a whole not being around much, but that's just me I guess.

ALSO self quote so this isn't lost in the black hole known as the bottom post of a page.

He was calling Eight Star out. It seems that quite a few mods have multiple roles, like being a forum, radio and chat mod.

He's usually around on the radio chat room. Otherwise he's off playing League of Legends or something...

Ah, well that is all well and dandy, but isn't he a forum mod. As in this forum here that I am posting in. What good is a forum mod that spends 99% of his time in the radio chat. But once again that's just me speaking the crazy, pay me no mind.

Or a rp mod who is never on. Or the other staff members who are never on.

To sum up this thread: we don't like whoever's promoting people. They're not doing a very good job.

Eight Star prefers promotion rather than hiring new people. So if you've questions, ask him about it.

This would have maybe been stressful a year ago. Given there is little activity what is keeping any staff from at least responding. Something like "I've brought the request to an administrator. Thank you." would be good enough at least.

Long story short, can at least some of the staff step up and at least point the thread to Tyro so he can give his final or at least some say on it? That would be super. Just because "It ain't my job" doesn't mean you just sit there. Yes the thread has only been open for a day or two but I see this happen for a lot of other things.

Perhaps the promotions are a reluctance due to prior complaints about too many staff? which as a result has left everyone stretched thinly over the site and exhausted. Perhaps a lack of foresight to those who both wanted, promoted and implemented such requests, the result being not hiring new people, but promoting old ones as the chances arose (mods willingly leave) to keep numbers down as it's rare anyone gets forcibly terminated.

For me, Site operation is the only aspect of this place that interests me, as such, these are the threads I browse and post in.
