"Your place in my life is not what I thought it would be," he replied quietly. "That's hard to process."
She looked over at him with a small frown, fidgeting with the rock. "I wish everything could just magically be okay." She dropped it on the ground again. "I'm sorry."
“Ben was right about that,” he replied quietly. “It’s not your fault that your decisions didn’t link up with mine. I guess I just don’t know you as well as I thought.”
Ben was cooking again, his eyes flickering sporadically as he worked. He looked up at her when she returned, offering her a hopeful smile.
She gave him a small smile as well, but her ears were drooping a little. She sat next to him, yawning.
“I didn’t either,” he replied with a small laugh. “You’re amazing, Cal. How’d you feel after you did it?”
