Been sorting through the VB website for forum add-ons; went through the first 20 pages there, sorted out some interesting stuff: http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=231106 -Miserable Users http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=243510 -Advanced Post Thanks http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=244028 -Merge Double Post http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=269904 -One Touch Ban & Clean-up http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=233296 -Helpful Answers - Allow users to rate individual posts http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=271797 -Countdown http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=268208 -Ban Spiders http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=247608 -Glowing Text http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=259017 -Ban Users From a Thread http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=261498 -Bad Behavior http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=239282 -First post on all pages http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=263699 -Turn words into links http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=262655 -Hotlink Protection http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=257680 -Ban some words/links from using on the forum http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=238433 -Ban individual user and/or users from sending pm, emails and and visitor messages http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=276865 -Disable Related Videos in youtube embeds
Ugh... Thanks? I guess... We're well aware of what 3rd party applications are on offer though. And miserable users? Seriously? That's a cruel mod if there ever was one. Sent from my GT-I9000 using Tapatalk 2
Err... I'm afraid I don't see much use for... Any of them, to be honest. As cool as some of these seem, they don't really seem all so necessary, not to me anyway. And the miserable users thing? That's kinda tight...
The only use I can see for the Miserable Users feature is if somepony gets banned or IP banned, and they try to work around that and create a new profile only to be found out. Even then, it seems like an unusual feature to have to use on anypony.
If 'too long' don't read... Sorry I put in the time.. Sounds lame now, but I was considering buying the place some premium mods. At least the 'like-a-post' one, I miss that. Admittedly some of these are cold blooded, especially the 'front page shows fake number of users browsing the forums regardless of how many are actually there' one. These are mostly mod tools, if you've never been a mod or never tended a real site of course you're not going to appreciate them. *Sigh* Once when I was a mod at a games forum, (they had their own forum style wasn't off the shelf), The admin and the other two mods had all announced publicly, (in different places), that they were going to be gone for a few days, leaving me to tend to the place alone. A spammer shows up. This was no ordinary kid with a comp, I found out later it was someone from an online club dedicated to causing 'chaos', said that was the name of their goddess. The Spammer (TS), would post in all the oldest threads bringing them up to the front of each sub-forum. When I deleted the old threads, they ramped things up by posting huge images. I'd ban them as a member and they'd re-sign and start again. I got their image server and reported them, they'd move to a new one. Then they shifted to hardcore porn. The first round took about 14 hours, I kept the place clean as best as I could. About 7 hours into the second round, (got about 6 hours sleep), I started tossing threats at T.S., elaborate ways I'd cause T.S.'s demise. Apparently that clicked with the sadist and they left. After that I saw that modding is no picnic. Being a sheriff isn't just walking around town getting free apples and jingling the spurs. Sometimes you're called upon to either shoot or take a shot or both.
I never said I didn't, but you suggested a mod that would make it almost impossible for a user to post. How does that show love and tolerance. I offered my opinion on the only one that caught my eye. Sorry you don't like my opinion. -- Sent from my Palm Pre using Forums
(Yeah, that was a bit harsh. I DID edit that out. I didn't see your post till later, here). I wish I'd had a few of those mods to work with then, like the 'one-touch ban and erase all' one. I had to sort through dozens of threads, checking to see if anything was still there. And all this while the place was wide open to the public. As just a mod I had no way in their forum system to shut anything down..
You're being awfully rude, you know... :derpe: Loving and tolerating doesn't mean doing everything a single member suggests. Suggestions don't work that way. Always respect the staff's decision.
This thread isn't about me. Honestly, I thought it might spark some debate. Maybe someone would be inspired to help sort through the forum mods and make their own suggestions. There are so many mods that would add to our enjoyment of the place, so many security tools for the mods, more stuff that can be listed here. Read the sub-forums description: Discuss the Everypony Community and any praise or complaints about it. NO ONE shall be punished for ANYTHING they say in here as long as it doesn't break the rules, so be honest as Applejack if you have a problem! No need to complain about love, tolerance, or rudeness, we're just talking.. Edited with love Viper~
Oh really? :Trollestia: Nah jk. Anyway, sorry for being all "in your face" about it. I tend to lose myself a bit sometimes.
I never said it was about you, only that first mod was dumb. Which is within description. The reason I only talked about that one mod is because it's not my job to look for this kind of stuff. So yeah, I was discussing the OT. -- Sent from my Palm Pre using Forums
No worries guys! IDK, to me a forum is like a car. It's nice to upgrade when you can, get a better stereo, get the undercoating for the paintjob, get the turbo package. In my opinion it's even more important for a forum because it isn't just one or two using the place, it's hopefully going to be hundreds, maybe thousands there daily. Every little rough edge is going to be annoying, every little joy is going to appreciated. They say you can't polish a turd? A forum is the reverse; you can't polish it enough, it'll always take a better shine. Just thinking on it, If there was one modification I'd pick would be the 'add spiders' mod. That sets and updates tags for a variety of search engines, where we're more visible to more people.
Well for starters I'm not happy with that description, I'll be telling Foxy to change that. We don't want people thinking they can get away with breaking rules in here (NOT that I'm saying you currently are!). As for the mods? There are some things I want to point out. - They are all third party mods, not one of them (bar maybe some premium stuff) is guaranteed to work with Vb's latest releases. - Bug fixes can take ages, if they ever come at all. People move on and stop supporting those mods. - Too many mods increases the server load, slows down the site, increases the chance of db errors etc. - Many mods are incompatible with other mods, crashing and causing.errors due to similar variable names or hook locations etc. - I don't want a car with an inbuilt fridge or toaster... Sure... It's "cool" but it isn't practical. You can have too much of a good thing. Simple is often better. I appreciate you taking the time to bring these to our attention, I really do, but we're far from short of experience ourselves. I check vbulletin.org and vbulletin.com reguarly. I've pitched the idea of a 'like' button to this community before, but at the time it appears people didn't find it favourable. We already have a large amount of products installed and have made several changes ourselves, including stuff to make moderation easier. Again I do appreciate the effort, but it is my belief that we don't need any of the above modifications, so far it seems everyone else agrees with me. I'm sorry. With what little experience of vBulletin I have, these mods will either slow down the site or become outdated fairly quickly. I'm not for these. Sorry bud.
Of course GK, I assumed that would be the case. No forum goes without modification for long. And no modifications would go without their own set of troubles/benefits. I guess overall my attempt here was to spark some debate, some interest in discussion on the continuing development of the forum. I agree on the like button. It's like adding your voice to a particularly good post, like saying "I second that!". IMO it adds to the feel of community.
You mean like continuously leaning on it 'against', or.. There isn't necessarily a dislike button in with you know..
No, like having a "like" button would probably cause the same issues as the rep did. -- Sent from my Palm Pre using Forums
