So, I've been thinking about what the Wonderbolts were because at the start of the show they seemed like this epic stunt flying team, but know their military... or seem like. It's hard to say because they never really explain what the Wonderbolts even do unless I missed that part somewhere.
The Wonderbolts are a militant group that, from what I guess, have been demilitarized since there was never much need for them, outside events and the Gala, in a while since there hasn't been anything serious enough to warrant a war requiring them. The only thing that confirms their military origin is the still running boot camp training pegasi approved to train to be future Wonderbolts by the badass firecraker herself, Spitfire. That boot camp was featured in a episode in which Dash has been accepted to boot camp and we are greeted by the antagonist of the episode, Lightning Dust, which was fighting Dash for Spitfire's attention as a possible recruit as a Wonderbolt.
was there ever a need for a military in the pony world though. they seem to solve most of their conflict with magic. and still use their old magic artifacts and ideals to solve conflict.
The whole military thing may have been a leftover from when the three main pony tribes where still separate from each other. Also, with a bunch of dragons, griffons, yaks, super-powered and corrupted ponies and who knows what else being able to run amok at any given time, you may sometimes need more than a bunch of luminescent horns and wishful thinking to solve all conflicts.
that does make a lot of sense that a solo tribe would need a military. yeah luminescent horns that can shoot friendship lasers! I think they won just fine, it's not like a Pegasus is any stronger anyway. It's also been able to solve all problems in modern day pony world.
I was thinking too about the boot camp part. In the WWE they have boot camp too. So it seems like boot camp is more of a training thing where you go through extreme discipline which would make sense for the Wonderbolts because if anyone makes a mistake some one else on the team could severely get injured or even killed.
