Years upon years upon years ago, the Elements of Harmony were created to keep order and peace in Equestria. However, there was an opposite reaction which spawned thirteen crystalline "hearts" made of disorder and darkness that was dispelled with the Elements. They found several ponies, and embedded themselves within them, the thirteenth one burying itself deep in a cavern underground. The ponies with the Hearts of Shadow became living embodiments of various kinds of disorder and darkness, all working together to rule over Equestria.
