@Sparkz: No to sound rude but I'm going to have to completly disagree with you on Rainbow Dash, while true the show focuses too much on Dashie's Jockish/jerkish side, Season 3 has been pretty good to her, we saw she had a more caring & compasionante side in Sleepless In Ponyville when at the end she conforted Scootaloo, and even accepted the offer to take her under her wing and be her surrogate Big-Sister/Mentor. And in Wonderbolts Academy, she learned her lesson on her own, infact she was the one calling out Lightning Dust & Spitfire. Spike though, this isn't just abusing a negative side of a characters personality, this is completly ignoring the actual character and turning him into a comedic plot device! Which in all honestly, is just sad. As for Flanderization, well I'd say thats being a bit too negative, the show like any other has a rotating stable of writers, most of them are pretty good at what they do and care about the shows cannon & characters, M.A.Larson, Cindy Morrow, Corey Ann Powell, and Meghan McCarthy are all still on their A-Game. Its just weak links like MerriWeather Williams & Dave Polskey that bring the show down at times. And i'm not trying to say there horrid, I have enjoyed both of set writers past episodes to a degree, infact Putting Your Hoof down is one of my personal favorite season 2 episodes. But yeah the thing is Polskey & Williams are more used to writing for cartoons like South Park & Spongebob, more sitcom style series, and thats pretty much what this episode was, Spongebob with a coat of pony painting, and that just doesn't work for me. MLP, if it were an anime would essentially be categorized as Slice of life, sure it has comedy and action/adventure as any good cartoon should. But its a character driven show, its about the cast bonding, creating new friendship dynamics, and further developing established ones, its about them and the lessons they learn about family, friendship and life in general, and on occasion its about fighting crazy nasty monsters or gods of Chaos XD. But yeah, it IS NOT an animated sitcom, and thats how Polsky & Williams wrote this episode, thus the reason it turned out the way it did. And honestly theres the fact it seems the show runners in general don't really know what to do with Spike, seems there split on weather to write him as a pony in a dragons body, or a full blown stereotypical stupid dragon, which is sad, because I love the little guy, but most of his episodes, sans Secret Of My Excess do seem to be the weaker episodes of the series. Hopefully though they will eventually figure out what they want to do with the little guy, until then though I say lets stay away from spike episodes for awhile XD. @Hevrin: Personally Dragon Quest is a bloody gold star compared to this steaming mess of an episode IMO ! I mean Dragon Quests only legit hiccups were the steryotypical frat boy teens, and Rarity being slightly OOC, but meh, to each their own @Zephyr: Indeed The may be pony/dragon eating monsters, but that doesn't mean they can't have manners XD *Timberwolves the only saving grace of this episode if you ask me!*
I thought the episode was pretty entertaining but I thought it kinda lacked in story. I do love how the whole mane 6 were there and how RD is writing a novel XD! It made me laugh but it was pretty forgettable. 8/10
You mean like how Rarity is always generous, RD is always loyal, and Fluttershy is always kind? >_> Just saying, but as far as the mane 6 go, this little blip is probably the smallest. I liked the episode alright, but it did kinda feel like filler to me. Still, I found it amusing and cute enough, and all of the mane 6 had a role in it! Also, isn't this episode 9? <_< Title changed for correctness x3
Yeah part of what makes the ponies entertaining is that they aren't always perfectly in tune with their element. And I agree this is the U.S. toon equivlant to a bad Anime filler episode. And yep its the 9th episode to air but production wise it was episode 10, because Episode 8 was moved back and made episode 11, in airing order that is, episode 10 will air 1/19 its about Discords return then episode 8 or 11 or whatever airs 1/26 and the last two will air in early February.
I wouldn't say it's a bad filler. I liked it well enough. It was just without any true substance for me, hence the filler (by the way, anime doesn't hold monopoly on fillers xD).
This was nothing like Spike I am used to...while it is understandable that honest people lie out of necessity, or that people are always generous, Spike abandoned Twilight so easily for some dragon code thing that has no base in dragon lore or the show. Annnd in the episode Crystal empire, we saw Spike cringed in horror believing Twilight wanted him away. It was supposed to be his worst fear. So his behavior was out of character. Rest of the ponies were spot on though.
Yeah that was the big problem with the episode, Spike was too OOC. I mean if this had been a season 1 episode where he didn't have as much development, it could have worked, but as is, meh...not so much.
Spike, the number one assistant, screwing up every little task he's given for the sake of plot... Yeah no thanks, alltogether a bad & boring episode. How the hell did Applejack manage to tie a hot-air balloon to her tail and stay on the ground??
oh wow, seems like I didn't comment on this episode yet. oh well, better late than never. anyway, episode was great. I think it was really funny how Spike is able to mess everything up as soon as his out of his working environment. (one can say that he doesn't know what went wrong). Also, I find it interesting how they made Twilight's attention span so strong, that she didn't even notice that something else was going on (Spike going away) (which is realistic, since I know for myself, while studying, or focused on something, there could be a bomb explosion outside, that I wouldn't even notice). Also OCD Twi is now canon (that ink cup that AJ put out of place really shook her and she had to put it back in place right away). Rainbow Dash writing novels? More like fanfics We have a new song? (One that Spike helped AJ remember) also, brace yourselves, AJxSpike shipping are coming. Also, part where Rarity had to taste Spike's pie was priceless. Those Rarity's face expressions xD overall 5/5 (also, my first post this year)
Also, yes Celestia help us all for all the incoming AJ X Spike fan-works that are sure to come.....*goes to get umbrella to prepare for oncoming storm*
I believe that's "The Lesser of Two Evils" from Season 2 when Fry suspects Bender of being Flexo because of the turtleneck he's wearing.
Winner. Also, I wonder who changed the topic title to remove the spoiler warning and change the episode number.
1/5 I'm not a fan of slavery, even if the restricted individual is willingly enforcing it. Spike, in my opinion, was being portrayed as a lesser being by having a backward 'code' that basically sold himself out to opression. Tut tut S3 ep. 9 writers, tut tut. The only reason there's 1 point is purely because there was FLUTTERSHY. She was in it, therefore the episode wasn't a complete flop.
Ok thanks for telling me that since I only started watching the show recently I haven't seen many episodes yet.
Episode was... meh overall. Although there were multiple enjoyable scenes that redeemed the episode somewhat (Pinkie Pie with her mustache; Rarity attempting to school Applejack on how to be a damsel-in-distress; Rainbow Dash's disastrous rock tower idea; Twilight being OCD about her stuff; the sweet exchange between Spike and Twilight at the very end). Plus, the Timber Wolves were VERY cool. I'm also impressed with how gorgeous the animation quality is getting in these Season Three eps. Too bad the central plot of the episode was moronic. 3/5 for me. It's still miles better than Dragon Quest.
I didn't really care for this episode. I don't know why, but Spike episodes never do anything for me. I did really like the part with Rainbow Dash though.
